I think all kids should learn to swim, even just for safety reasons. But this should really be a targeted program for those that can’t afford to get their kid swimming lessons.

    • +1

A completely reasonable opinion, but of course you're getting voted down.

    • +3

Swimming lessons at my local are $220 per term, per kid. We do get a slight discount though, since the last invoice was $638.

A hundred bucks once a year isn’t changing any decisions. It isn’t designed to make lessons available for people who can’t afford them.

      • +1

Then what is it designed to do then?

    • Government wants kids to learn how to swim. A $100 voucher can be good motivation for a parent regardless of their income.

      • Parents shouldn’t need motivation to do a basic thing to keep their children safe.

        • +2

And yet my neighbour still lets their kids ride a bike and scooter without a helmet at least. Basic right?

          • -3

@xoom: That's fine unless they are going too fast, or not being careful

            • @DrScavenger: Speed and being careful means nothing. If the child's head hits the ground without a helmet they could be brain-damaged for life.

  • So is this a second voucher from the one that was available at the beginning of the year? Or is this just a repost of the same voucher?

    • This is the second voucher and expires next year.

Hard part is finding an open spot for the munchkin.

how can you be 6 yo and not enrolled in school? but why?

    • Not sure how that will be checked or even enforced. I guess the government has another budget for swimming programs for schools already?

    • Imagine if this was a way to catch out parents who hadn't put their kid in school by 6.

    • +2

      Home schooled

      • oxymoron

    • I was hella sick as a kid so started school a year late

    • Cut and paste error? Last year this voucher was available for kids in kindergarten.

Or the kid’s birthday is in late December after the school year has finished. They didn’t need to be in school that year because they weren’t 6 yet, they can start the year they turn 7.

  • I'm surprised this isn't targeted towards toddlers as well…

    • Can you imagine teaching a group of terrible two’s? I would drown myself even in the wading pool.

      • +1

My daughter’s in 2-3 old's swimming class. I think 4 years old protest more than 2 and 3 year old.

        • +1

Couldn't agree with you any better, my 1 year old has been attending swimming lessons since 6 months old and loves each session.

        • +1

Agreed, every saturday I swim with the 2yo because the 4yo wont swim unless her mum is watching her.

      • My son started at 8 months. He's 1 1/2 now, so annoying he's not eligible

        • +1

Feel your pain. My second princess wasn’t eligible last year but now she is. Here’s hoping it’s a permanent thing offered each year. The more kids that learn to swim or learn to be safe in the water is priceless.

Government should subsidise lessons for adults too.

    • Aren't toddlers around 3?

      • +1

        Toddlers are from 1 - 3 years old :)

Swimming for kids under school age is a waste of money anyway, the grown up has to be in the pool. All it does is to get the kids not scared of the water. Unless yours has some sort of Phelps gene in it it won't make much of a difference if they start at 2 or 5. Swimming has been treated as a life-long class so a hundred buck voucher isn't much in the scheme of thing, it's the commitment of taking them there every week after class or on a Saturday morning.

      • +1

Research shows that formal swim lessons for children age 1 and older reduce the risk of drowning.

  • Anything like this available from Dan in Victoria?

    • +1

II just spent over $300 on Term 4 swimming lessons. :-(

$100 per year, will go nowhere to help with the cost of swimming lessons — they are simply too expensive. It’s just a small discount on a huge expensive.

Honestly, schools should be required to teach all children. That is how I learnt 30 years ago.

      • It's not cheap but it's a valuable life skills, some school does it but unless yours has some dolphin gene, a few days a year won't make a difference, it will take a few years of weekly lesson to get some decent survival skill underwater.

      • Schools are for getting an academic education. Parents are for teaching life skills.

  • Wait, First Lap voucher has been around for a while now. Isn't this the same?

    • New batch of vouchers expiring next year.

      • But if already used one from the old batch, can't be eligible again for the same child right?

        • It’s a same voucher, if you have already used First Lap since 1 July 2022, then you don’t get this one.

          • @IMadeYouReadThis: agreed. this has been available since 1 july, so nothing new here

        • +1

I tried to check with my older kid for you if it’ll work but she had her 6th bday already so it stopped me there. I can understand if it’s meant to be one voucher per child.

Can’t remember if it happened last time but there was a survey and bunch of questions. I answered in a way that hopefully helps to get it going again next year.

    Will optus pay for this?

  • +1

Why can’t these be used for adults as well? Is it not important for adults to be able to swim as well?

    • I’m guessing the assumption is that adults that can’t swim know to avoid water compared to a child.

  • What about adults who cannot swim? Is there any help for us?

But seriously if anyone else here lives in Brisbane has any clues pls let me know

    • +1

probably talk to a local swim school to get you started… it's never too late to learn.

but the older you get, the more you'd find the muscles you thought you never had. :)
