which version of the df64 is this and any mods as per previous deals? also how you you describe the taste profile of the GG burrs, do they compete with a particular set of SSP burrs?

    • +1

It's version 3 as the version 4 declumper is a significant backwards step in our testing. Yes all of the additional mods are included which include the grind indicator and dosing cup adapter. In regards to how they compare to SSP we have not had the opportunity to test side by side yet however we will be testing 7 different burr sets in the not too distant future.

According to the Gorilla Gear website:

"The Gorilla Gear 64mm Black Flat burrs will increase your dose consistency and extraction, reduce static and clumping, stabilize the operating temperature, and bring a higher taste quality and clarity to the cup. As we continue to evolve, learn, and grow so will our products. We endeavor to provide the coffee industry with as much information as possible about the benefits of our products and will continue to build this library with the aim of making coffee tastier."

What's the difference between the Gorilla Gear Burr and the Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) burr which was $825 last month?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/718912

    • We have not had the chance to test them side by side at this stage however we will be doing so soon. However by looking at the burrs the Gorilla Gear burrs seem to have smoother finish to their surface.

    • Also the cut geometry is different between the two so there would be a different flavour profile from each burr set. Which one is better at this stage I can not say but the Gorilla Gear burrs do have some positive feedback online.

  • But does the coffee taste any different to using a $200 grinder?

    • +5

Depends on the coffee you are making. Pour over? Perhaps not. Espresso? Absolutely unequivocally yes, unless it is a hand grinder at a stretch.

      • How about an espresso with steamed milk? Will the milk drown out the taste?

      • I guess for a cheap dark roasted coffee beans it wouldnt make a lot of difference but for a fresh roasted speiciality coffee they absolutely do.Flat burr grinders have higher clarity compared to conical. You can easily notice different flavour in the cup. Also grinding sizes tend to be more uniform.

I don't have this but I swapped from a $200 Breville grinder to another ozb fav in the Eureka Mignon Specialita and I can absolutely say that my $12 aldi bean coffee taste a lot better!

          • @drprox: I feel that a $1k+ grinder would be wasted on me. I’m not sure I could tell the difference between this and a $10 one.

Rough palate, or Emperor’s new clothes?

    • +4

Yes. Consistency in grind size and heat dispersion both effect the taste of coffee.

    • for 990 tho? Better makes me high like a kite.

It’s funny people drop 800 on an espresso machine and think it’s justifiable but then struggle to drop an equivalent amount in a grinder. But the grinder by far makes a bigger difference to the taste of the coffee than the machine. I’d rather spend $200 on a used Gaggia classic and $900 on a grinder like this one than spend $900 on a brand new breville machine and $200 on a breville smart grinder (as many people seem to do).

If you’re into good coffee and the alternative is spending $4-$5 for a cup at a good cafe that uses local beans, the whole setup will pay for itself pretty quickly.

This is exactly what I did last month.
Got a GCP and picked up a Niche direct from UK.
Waiting on OPV, PID and dimmer mod kits atm, still pretty decent without the mods but the 14bar OPV is just a strange choice by gaggia.
          very happy so far.

          • @DeToxin: Nice combo! I got the niche in the initial crowdfunding and it’s a great grinder… apparently gorilla gear are developing replacement burrs for it… though I’m starting to lust after flat burr grinders these days. The upgradeitis in this hobby never ends.

100% and it is very likely that the grinder will outlast most coffee machines.

    • Absolutely.. assuming you’re using good, recently roasted beans.

    • A good hand grinder like a 1Zpresso JX or JX-Pro will be every bit as good. Have owned high-end electrical and hand grinders…absolutely zero difference…once they're both dialled-in for a particular bean.

Hey Frankies Beans, do you have any complimentary tickets to MICE? if you need to get rid of any feel free to send one my way ;-) would love to check out the grinder in person tomorrow!

    • +1

Sorry unfortunately we do not. We had to pay for our own tickets to get to the show as well.

      • Thanks anyway, might try and head along and have a look.

    • +1

Don't blame you for asking. Paying $60 is steep for an event which is primarily aimed at selling stuff to you.

  • Does anyone know if it's 220v with an Australian plug? Also, what's the warranty?

    • Yes it's Australian stock with local plug, warranty, support and certification. We are the Australian distributors of the DF64 and our stock also includes a number of additional items as standard in the box like metal indicator ring and a dosing cup adapter.

  • Are these in stock and ready to ship or?

  • +1

We have white units in stock. All black units sold out on day 1 of MICE.

  • Ive heard that these grinders need a few mods before they perform well. Is that true in your experience?

  • +1

I'd much prefer to buy from Aus, not to mention the extra QoL goodies you get (and v3 over the v4 declumper) but we absolutely need that comparison of the 7 different burr set options and from that, what pricing might be on offer for them e.g. the Multi-purpose SSP which I had personally settled on or whether to buy burrs separately

At this point in my research, i feel like I'm bleeding money if I value my time in those terms and will likely settle on a Black Friday deal quality hand grinder instead… fatty me needs all the exercise he can get tbh
