Got an email from BW today:

As of 24 August 2022, the COVID-19 medical cover exclusion, as part of the complimentary overseas travel insurance, has been removed on the Bankwest Platinum Mastercard® and Bankwest World Mastercard™.
What does this mean?
This means that if you become unwell due to COVID-19 while travelling overseas, some of your medical related expenses may be covered in your credit card’s complimentary overseas travel insurance. You can find the updated details in the Bankwest Credit Card Insurances PDS under 'Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit'.
Important things to note:

To be eligible to claim, your travel must have commenced after 24 August 2022.
If you purchased any upgraded cover before 24 August 2022, regardless of the date your travel commences, COVID-19 cover is not included under 'Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit'.
There is no COVID-19 cover for cruise travel or cancellation claims related to COVID-19.

The words "may be" would exclude 99% of claims.

This is a good free card and the fact that it has travel insurance is a bonus. But check carefully especially for your destination. I would never use this free CC card TI for example to the USA.

    • Where's the list though

  • I have a cruise to Tas coming up but it says cruises are exempt. Sad.

  • Yeah, cheap TI won’t leave itself open to cover a possible helicopter transfer shore - ship - shore hospital.

  • There is no COVID-19 cover for cancellation claims related to COVID-19.

    So pretty much useless.

  • Txb, fortunately we are less likely to catch Covid especially if you put your mask on. But it is useful for a lot of other things and it is still free.

    • Sure, medically there is coverage but being unwell will strain and more than likely force you to cancel certain prepaid activities not to mention if you need to separate from travel companions by needing new accommodation.

      • Actually just read the link provided by the OP. Covid IS covered.
If you really need complete cover for absolutely everything you need to go and buy specific TI.

        • I did not write it wasn't. The extent of the "covid cover" is limited to medical related expenses only.
Spontaneous travelers would this be better suited for (booking their activities and accommodation on the fly)

  • Does anyone know if the platinum version of this card is useful to cover rental car insurance excess when renting within Australia ?

Best to read the PDS. Insurance is so important you need to be sure yourself of what it is you want to cover.

    • Overseas Travel Insurance which is in two parts:
      – A. Complimentary Overseas Travel Insurance which
has cover for overseas medical and dental expenses,
accidental death, personal liability and baggage and
      personal goods.
      – B. Upgraded Benefits which has cover available for
additional expenses, cancellation costs, baggage and
travel delay, a longer period of insurance, specified
existing medical conditions and rental car insurance
excess if you apply for the cover and pay the premium.

      O/S only not within aus

    • The best car cover is with Amex as long as it’s more then 150km from your home.

    • Have the platinum card and was checking this today, previously I think rental car insurance excess was covered but it appears to be an upgrade option now.

  • Whilst I love bank West, if they are still using covermore as their broker then don't bother.
I'm still dealing with a claim (price protection) from June.
Dealing with them is like pulling hens teeth..

Just report them to insurance ombudsman or AFCA it always worked for me

    • I have the opposite experience. Claimed for damaged camera equipment during OS holiday. No fuss repair at repairer of my choice and was quickly handled. Mind you I took out my policy directly with Covermore. I find their policies pretty easy to understand.
