Optus Data Hack - Runaround from NSW Government

I have had a ‘friend’ confirm their drivers licence details have been compromised by the Optus hack.

They went to the Haymarket Service NSW service centre with completed forms and evidence to change drivers licence number.

First time, rejected outright and told to just call IDCare as they process and take care of everything. They provided details for IDCare. Calls them, they say nope we are a charity and help victims of identity theft but we don’t do new licences.

Finds out about ID Support NSW. They try to convince him to report licence as lost or stolen and that would get him a new card number, but not a licence number. After some back and forth they said ServiceNSW should have accepted the paperwork.

Goes again to same Service NSW office. Gets told to call ID Support again. Confirms what they said to him and then gets a similar run around about reporting it lost or stolen.

Eventually they accept the paperwork with a disclaimer that ‘you probably won’t get it changed because transport nsw isn’t approving any’

What a mission and fun times for hours on hold.

Does the NSW Government even know what it’s doing? Anyone else had that experience. I’m not looking forward to getting my email from Optus. Fingers crossed I’m not on the list.

I have had a ‘friend’ confirm their drivers licence details have been compromised

Hi, was your friend able to confirm that by coming across his personal information amongst the batch that was released on the ‘darkweb’ or was he only basing that on the email
that he had received from Optus ?

You need to attach evidence to the paperwork you submit to services nsw.

He has Email from optus, call to optus and a further letter he got from an optus store after their call centre suggested that was the easiest way.

All three confirmed dl number compromised.

FYI - NSW are planning to change card numbers. Not DL numbers. NSW requires both numbers to pass ID checks.

Your friend's form is unlikely to be processed.

        • Yep. Saw that.

Though whats the point replacing the card number when that wasn’t compromised as it was never provided.

This all feels amateurish. The change licence number form even lists eligibility and it says ‘victim of fraud OR licence number has been compromised in a hack’ (paraphrased)

          • @Vote for Pedro: What's the point of replacing your DL number if your customer/card number wasn't compromised?

It's not amateurish, it's a basic form for maybe 50 peeps a year. Not designed for a million requests due to Optus' incompetency.

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Here’s the quote from the form:

If you have reasonable grounds to believe that your NSW driver licence number or your Transport for NSW customer number has been misused by someone else or is at risk of being misused by someone else (e.g. via a data breach) you may apply for a new number using this Application Form.

Whats the point of the government providing the capability and having the process then if its for some people and not all when the eligibility is met? Who decides?

Also, again, whats the point in replacing card number as they are recommending?

  • Has nsw confirmed they’re doing this yet?

From what I understand they have a standard process to change DL number if you are the subject of fraud or are a victim of data theft

      Theres a form

Reads clickbait article, expects it to be reality in the real world the following day.
It’s a government department, how efficiently and quickly do you think they will implement changes in policy and procedures?

    • +1

There’s a standard form. It exists already. It’s more the runaround.

Also, what do you mean by clickbait article? All confirmed.

Customers affected by the data breach WILL be advised to head the Service NSW app to apply for an interim card number.

"The NSW Government WILL provide further advice to impacted customers as more information comes to light," Mr Dominello said.

NSW customers who need support regarding the replacement of identity documents and advice on preventative actions are encouraged to contact ID Support NSW on 1800 001 040.

…the key word is WILL, as in later or not now.

Key with that being ‘new card number’ not ‘new licence number’

    • to my surprise every other state has come to the table

what is there to say about the alleged 'Premier State'

  • Was your "friend" on TV today? Sounds like the info on the news.

    • Don’t know. Didn’t ask. Got a link?

I think you'll find most policies and procedures in NSW (Australia in general) rely on bad things not happening in the first place. Government will prevent it as much as reasonably feasible but if something bad does happen, it's basically a shit show and you're out of options.

Self defense laws are a good example. It's illegal to defend yourself in any physical capacity, which is quite simply absurd and inhumane to expect onto citizens. Doesn't pose much of an issue since violent crime is relatively uncommon but if it does happen, you're screwed. Somebody starts to attack you and your family - all you can do is call a timeout so you can call the police and wait patiently for them to arrive.

You are allowed to defend yourself. You can’t just go and beat someone to a pulp just because they enter your property, that’s being a vigilante.

So if someone breaks into my home in the middle of the night wielding a knife, what is an acceptable act of self defense? If I hurt or kill them, I'm facing charges for a multitude of offences.

You basically need to wait until the knife is already inside you or a family member until you're allowed to react with deadly force.

That's not self defense. If someone breaks into my home in the middle of the night, they're getting shot with a cattle rifle. Im not going to question them or wait around to see what their intentions are. If thats the risk you want to take with your loved ones, I'd say you're a pretty unreliable provider. But it should not be illegal for others to react proactively in situations where there is reasonable concern for your safety. Alas, in Australia, it is.

My word how wrong you are.

        • another false hypothetical with no facts or real-world examples. classic slav

It's illegal to defend yourself in any physical capacity,

please reference the law you think illustrates this?

    • I'll jump on this. My data was breached too, and I intend on holding them (and our dody lax corporate laws) accountable.

Ideally, telco companies should not have personal details anyway. This is what happens when every corporation has a duty or excuse to collect every tidbit about your personal life before you sign up.
