4g Home Internet Options 300GB+

We can’t get NBN or ADSL where we are as it’s part of a complex.

Trying to find a good reliable 4G (can’t get 5g) internet provider that has a decent GB plan with no speed capping.

Optus and Telstra both have service where we are but we struggle to get consistent reliable service (drop outs, can’t connect etc)

Also any recommendations for a good 4G modem router to pair.

Thanks

Have you checked if your complex is serviced by OptiComm or TPG FTTB?

    • It’s not an apartment complex it’s hard to explain but nbn is not an option

      • OptiComm and TPG FTTB are fixed line networks in limited locations and have nothing to do with the nbn.

By not providing the full story, we cannot assist you to our full ability.

        X Y problem

        • We don’t have a physical address. We live in a house which was once used for hospice. So there is many houses next to the hospital and everything goes through the hospital including mail

  • Vodafone has a 500gb phone plan for $55, or $60 for unlimited. I used it for about 6 months or so in an Optus router. The connection was fine where I lived, but don't expect to do any decent gaming done. https://www.vodafone.com.au/plans/sim-only

  • You can root the Telstra Smart Modems which you can then chuck in a sim card of your choosing.

  • If your Optus and Telstra signals aren't good then the only option left is Vodafone and it's unlikely to be any better.

Are you just hotspotting or have you actually gotten a modem? That could be the issue too, hotspot is great in a pinch but once you start hooking up multiple devices it tends to be a bit unreliable.

Otherwise call up Telstra about getting a signal booster (don't just buy one online btw, there's legalities around using them). Pricey though.

    • Got a modem. When it’s good it’s great: but it drops out often

Huawei B818 on the second hand market.

Then get this (transfer your mobile to this)
    https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/plans/shop
    500gb plan

Then get this and put in modem

Share of 510gb across home and mobile
Home internet and mobile for $84.

    • Thanks, that’s what we’re doing at the moment. Maybe it’s our modem.

  • What 4G device are you using to do the tests with? If it's a phone then a B818 will be allot better.

If your 4G signal is not good you may need an external 4G yagi antenna on the roof pointing to the appropriate tower for where you are (depends on topography and interference as to which to3wer is best and what bands the tower(s) support).

    • We have a tplink 4g modem.

      • I suspect this is your problem. As others have suggested the Huawei B818 is Cat 19, which means it uses multiple connections and bands to improve the speed and reliability of the internet connection. Most tplink modems are Cat 6 or less (which would be less reliable and lower speed).

  • I'm using TPG's 4G Home Wireless offering. Unlimited data but speed capped to 20MBps. Works fine for me with streaming and occasional game downloads.

    • Thanks, play fortnight on 2 consoles most nights so need more than 20mbps.

      • 4g internet will not help you with ping if that is your issue.

      • 4G is not for gaming.

        • Unfortunately it’s our only option

        • ? 4g is fine if you have a good connection

Ping is good just not fibre good

  • Optus

Try narrow down provider and bands first
Antenna is probably more important than modem tbh too

We had to ditch optus for telstra
Used to get 150mbs but about 1 and a half years into our contract speeds went to the crappers

I have actually have two b818s here
They work well on optus bands but are annoying to bandlock and have some firmware issues (would go a different modem if i could go back in time)

    • I’ve heard mixed reviews about the b818. We also have a wifi dead spots in the house so I was looking at the Orbi LBR20. But they are $$$

  • Optarse
