Ordered this last week. Cheap for what you get. Will go well for my kid at school next year

    • Are laptops required from Year 6 onwards?

      • Year 4 and up for our school.

        • Ok wow, would have thought high school at least.

        • Private or public?

Would've thought public schools provide laptops for free

          • @Homr: Public and they used iPads provided by us from Prep to year 3

  • +3

    Can this charge from USB-C?

    • +2

According to this, no. Big letdown.

Have one for work, no USBC charging. The biggest knock against it.
You can throw up to a 32GB RAM module in the secondary slot though.

      • How can one tell just by looking at the specs ?

        • +1

You can't really. Like I said, I have one for work. The USBC charging inability was immediately obvious but I did lots of research and opened the laptop up before buying the ram stick.

  • Anyone owned one of these ? Is the fan loud when web browsing ?

    • +5

Depends what you're browsing on the web ;)

      • What will make the fan loudest?

        • +28

On Onlyfans ofc, it's in the name XD

For anyone seriously following this thread, fans shouldn't kick up just googling things lol. If they are, clean them out or close your 50 tabs.

      • Linux isos ;)

    • I will say have a look in store. I bought one Asus years ago and though the specs were top notch the screen was bad. There was only one angle where the colors looked correct. I sold it after 6 months

  • +1

Anyone in if the ram is soldered or upgradable?

    • +5

For 16Gb Ram I don't think this matters.

      • +1

Depends on what your use case is. For some people 8GB is plenty, for some 16GB isn't enough.
And some people just like to do their 3D rendering in a virtual machine XD

        • +12

If 16gb isn't enough then you should know why and be able to pick a laptop appropriate to your needs.

    • -3

@hashtagbargain It's 2in1 (convertable) memory is normally always is soldered. Is infact soldered on this laptop

Reviews say that the screen is not bright enough, at around 220nits.

    • +6

I got a Ryzen 7 version a year and a half ago. Can confirm. It's not unusable, but it makes it hard to even watch things while sitting in the living room with the blinds open. Would not recommend.

    • Oof.. no good

    • +1

Definitely not bright enough, had one but returned after a few days and got an Envy X360 instead

    • +1

250 nits apparently. Along with no USB-C charging and pretty average battery… pass.

      https://youtu.be/vUVf943T9rA

    • I can vouch for that. Check the laptop in store first. The screen can be bad

  • Considering getting this for my kids high school use. Find out the screen brightness. The 8gb ram is just passable these days tbh. Couple web tabs, a word doc or two, excel and or only 1 instance of photoshop will bog it down.

    • +1

      I wouldn't do 8gb.

You can get a yoga for around $1300-1400 with 16gb RAM and Ryzen cpu.
Edit: as per below link, $1300!

    • +3

This asus is better out of the box performance wise but yes check screen quality. I'd say both are similar

      • +1

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll grab this. If the screen is not bright enough I'll return it.

        • +1

          Or this https://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-yoga-7-14-inch-r5-560…

Was searching for something similar lately so unless I missed something that was the best spec and price yoga I could find

Have you considered the Intel NUC M15? That has a good screen, 16GB RAM, 11th gen i5 or i7 which either should be fine, and TB ports. Amazing build quality too. Goes on sale and posted here quite often

          • +4

            @FakeBusinessCEO: I think he is after a 2-in-1 laptop.

Seems these NUCs has touch screen but not convertible.

            • @HappilyEverAfter: I second the vote for the Intel NUC, which I bought after returning a Yoga 7i 2-in-1 whose fans just continued at high whine during sleep.

The NUC screen can lie flat, which is what you really need to use touch. I don't miss 2-in-1 folding. It is, after all, a laptop.

Get the i7 NUC - the touchscreen is a useful bonus, but the chassis and thermals are engineered for the i7. It's a brutal beast, silent unless provoked.

              • @mantichoral: Cool thanks I didn't know that NUC screen can lie flat (180 degree turn).

Although not as convenient as tablet mode (360 degree turn), it should be ok and meet the school requirement for stylus use.
It does not come with a pen but I assume some stylus pen would work with it.

I second that Yoga 7i has issue with the fans.

                • @HappilyEverAfter: a stylus is required by the school? what are the school's use cases?

I've only tried fingers and a couple of softended sticks I got for casual sketching on an iPad - all work on the touch i7 M15 NUC as expected. I don't know about finegrained drawing, though.

  • How would this compare to a Surface Laptop 4?

    • @hindo Build quality and screen is night and day better than this model. Vivobook is Asus budget range.

    • This has a touchscreen… if you really want that. Otherwise the Surface 4 is a much better option IMO.

      • +1

The Surface Laptop 4 has a touchscreen too but for $1000 you're getting at best 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.

        • I did not know that. That’s pretty cool they added that to their line up. In that case, yeah the ram would be the only downside and I guess storage size. Personally I’d still rather the Surface from what I’ve seen on reviews for the ASUS.

  • $450 more for an extra 8gb ram and 256gb ssd? :O

I have one of these for work as mentioned above. The lack of USBC charging is true and what I hate most about it. Caring a pet brick in 2022 is criminal.
The screen is OK for indoor use but the second you have any external light source or think about using it outside, it sucks.
One memory stick is soldered onto the board but you can replace the secondary one fairly easily. I threw 32 GB at mine (40 in total) and it runs pretty well.

  • Completely recommend, so good I got a second one when they upgraded the model.
Good general OS support and perfect quality for the price.
Decent processing power for the price.
They even care enough to upgrade the BIOS unlike some companies I can mention…

    • +1

You don’t have any issues with using it in a bright environment and the screen brightness?

      • I wouldn't say it's good or bad, pretty average from the laptops I've had in the past few years.
I've got a brand new gaming screen, all Pantone this and anti-glare that etc. for three times the price and I can't see much difference.
If you are out and about in full sunlight you might struggle but I think you'd need something VERY high-end to beat it.
I have used this in a shaded area of a park regularly on sunny days with zero problem.

I've got a feeling that the few people that have not been happy might very well have an different version to my two, maybe an outdated BIOS or maybe ASUS upgraded the hardware in a later revision? Perhaps some super-aggressive power saving in Windows that is difficult to find?
Under Linux I have full brightness almost all the time but equally I've not been annoyed with it being dim.
I've had to take the brightness down a step or two only in dark rooms and having it close.

Sorry it took me so long to respond!

  • Also, the flip mode is next to useless (for me) but touchscreen and flip capable without any penalty.
The size and weight seems too much for flip to be useful but no harm in having it.

  • I bought this one for my son next year school use (year 5). I also noticed the screen is not bright enough and of course can’t beat with iPad. But my son has no complained for that, he can stand for the screen. He doesn’t like the yoga design. I’m still thinking about whether need to return or exchange to yoga or HP

    No type-c charging apparently

  • Stock level is low in most of Officeworks using O/W store check-stock.
Apparently could not find one in Victoria.

Bondi Junction Officeworks, North Ryde Officeworks has a limited stock.

Dee-why Officeworks has couple of stocks.

Might be worth to visit the store if nearby. I like the spec though and obviously it's value for money for kids.

You can use the USB-C charger to fast-charge the laptop according to this:
    https://www.asus.com/au/Laptops/For-Home/Vivobook/Vivobook-F…

Not sure though if you want to use the USB-C port to charge your own stuff.

    • You can use the USB-C charger to fast-charge the laptop according to this:
      https://www.asus.com/au/Laptops/For-Home/Vivobook/Vivobook-F…

      Where does it say that?
I can not see any explicit mention of fast charging via USB-C.
Can you point me to the sentence/paragraph where this is stated?
I can see in one section Asus mention fast charging, and they also mention USB-C, but in that section they do not specifically say you can fast charge via USB-C.
Based on all the various comments above in this post (some from actual owners of the product), you can not charge via USB-C.

      • Hey mate,

This is what I am referring to from the website. Hope this link to the picture works as well https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/167891/98465/vivobook_…,

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

          UNCOMPROMISED PRODUCTIVITY
          Maximize your day
VivoBook Flip 14 offers a range of features designed to keep you productive all day long, including fast-charge technology that lets you recharge a low battery to 60% in just 49 minutes.

I considered that may be the section you were referring to, but that sentence does not even mention USB-C at all.

I also realise there are graphics below the sentence for fast charging, backlit keyboard, and USB-C®, so I can only assume you must be thinking they are directly related because they are shown together in the same section. But if you think about it, a backlit keyboard has nothing to do with fast charging, so the USB-C® graphic is also most likely being shown as one of the "range of features designed to keep you productive".

Even when you click on the [Learn more] button there is nothing that directly links USB-C and fast charging. The "Learn more" section simply talks about the keyboard, and provides a blurb and images showing the ports available on the laptop.

As I originally mentioned, this is further backed by comments above such as this one from someone who owns the laptop and says "I have one of these for work as mentioned above. The lack of USBC charging is true and what I hate most about it. Caring a pet brick in 2022 is criminal."

I asked about where to find the information because I was interested if you had found conclusive statements to show it did indeed support USB-C fast charging, since that would affect my decision to purchase.

Thanks again for replying, but I don't think Asus is actually claiming it supports USB-C charging, and you (and others) should be careful about purchase if you think it does, because it seems likely you will be disappointed.

          • @oz-dave: All good, mate. Much appreciated for your feedback.
Yeah, I was referring to the USB-C fast charge. And of course I hear you that there is no specific section describing as such.

Actually I am planning to visit the nearby store to give it a test/check which have stocks but could not locate anywhere within 50km from my place. From the price point, it is really a big bang for buck but if without USB-C fast charging, then it is a big no for me too.
