White Goods Recommendations

Hi guys,

The misus and I are moving in together soon and none of us owned any furniture in the past. We have completed furniture shopping now onto white goods!

I’m gonna pull the trigger on the recent C2 promo to get the $350 GC from Harvey Norman but can someone please recommend a washing machine?

For Fridge I will go with Westinghouse, I heard good things about it.

Our budget for washing machine is around $800-$1.2k. I did see Bosch at this price point but I know absolutely nothing about washing machines..

We gonna try to get Beko Heat Pump dryer.

Every brand and every product will have supporters and detractors. I personally prefer LG appliances.

Move in before you buy the appliances. So you can buy ones that fit/suit the house.

  • They're all crap. Just get the cheapest ones or second hand.

      This isn't a crazy idea.

Sure, you could get yourself a $2000 fridge, but how long will it last you? 10 years? So the ROI is comparable for the $200 that only lasts you a year. (and that's if it only lasts you a year…)

Good choice on the heat pump dryer

We recently got a Bosch heat pump to upgrade our old Bosch condenser and it uses 1/2 the energy

Plus I’d suggest getting a washer that spins at 1400rpm or more. The higher spin speed pulls more water out of the clothes and makes drying more efficient

    • Thank you. Question on the dryer, did you mount yours? I don't have space to put them next to each other :(

Yeah, that was actually part of the reason we got the new dryer

We primarily wanted a new, bigger washer but wanted to stack the dryer on top, so we upgraded the dryer too (making sure it was compatible to stack on the washer).

We needed a stacking kit which was $80, which is expensive for what it is but seems legitimately useful to make sure the dryer doesn’t fall off

Edit we got the Bosch serie 8 washer and dryer

Can't go wrong with German made Bosch, serie 6 and above for best price/performance ratio. You can put a anti vibration mat on top of the washing machine and stack the dryer on top.

I had the same issue (can't fit washer/dryer side by side) when we bought our house 2 years ago.

So we end up with a LG washer/dryer combo. It's cheaper than buying 2 separate unit, and it still serves us very well till this date (we don't use it a whole lot as it's only 2 of us). Cotton dust does build up near the door seal, but it wasn't too hard to wipe them off once a while.

best part is I can just use the wash+dry function and not to worry about taking all cloth out and chuck it to a different machine again.

    • I think that’s a great idea though I’ve heard the drying on those 2 in 1s isn’t great

      • same here…always skeptical about the combo ones

        • If it's just one person it's not too bad if you stay on top of your laundry and don't let it build up. For example putting a load on in the morning before you go to work on a timer so it completes when you get home and you can put it away.

If you have a lot of laundry to do and need it to go through the drying cycle, the washer is out of action while it's drying and the cycles are long as it's not particularly efficient at either task. Even washing alone is a lengthy process.

Add another person to the mix and you've increased the load required and it's a pain. If you come back from a holiday it'll be days before you're able to get through everything.

The biggest pain was it getting out of balance and not starting the drying cycle.

          • @Mr Krinkle: Yeh so we will def go for washer and dryer. Just makes things easier!

@sauce2k: my combo does like 10kg washing and 6kg drying.

so basic guide is never wash too much at once.

I can dry one bed sheet no problem, definitely not 2 at the same time.

    Recent Choice best buys…..

  • Just to share my 2 cents. definitely look into more efficient appliances as that will save you in the long run. That being said, be wary of the feature creep on these things. When we were in the market for new fridge the SO and I went looking at saw all these cool features, like ice making, door panels that go transparent, and so on and so on… and of course the models that had all these bells and whistles cost a huge heap more… I told myself, I'm here because I want a machine that will keep my food cold and fresh and retard spoilage. I asked myself if those features will be any different to keeping my food cold and astoundingly, the answer was no. Base model and high end, feature rich did the job exactly the same. The SO really wanted the ice maker, and I told her, in the two decades that we had our regular fridge/freezer did we ever think "oh I wish this had an ice maker". Fact is, we hardly even used ice. And the ice maker part takes up otherwise useful fridge space. Not to mention it requires plumbing installed.

The reality is, when in the shop, it's so easy to be dazzled by features and think, "oh wow, this machine can do so much more than the base model" Even though it's significantly pricier. Don't forget the main thing you're buying it for. If it does what you need, then it doesn't matter if it's the base model.

    • Thanks for sharing! Haha yeh I was going for features then the misus intervened. Her family bought a really expensive fridge that comes with different features but also problems. We going for basics and good brands.

  • Just a question? Are you renting or moving into your own house /unit?

If renting, remember you can get asked to leave if the place goes on the for sale market so don't go overboard with appliances and furnishings, just get the least expensive to do the job stuff (new of course) so if you are forced to move and rent a smaller place oyu can liquidate the cheap stuff if needed

I’m moving back in hence why we are spending a bit more to buy better quality products
