      Great read..
Currently being made to a movie in brissy

  • Is this suitable for young teenagers?

    • "A novel of love, crime, magic, fate and coming of age, set in Brisbane's violent working class suburban fringe - from one of Australia's most exciting new writers.

Brisbane, 1983: A lost father, a mute brother, a mum in jail, a heroin dealer for a stepfather and a notorious crime for a babysitter. It's not as if Eli's life isn't complicated enough already. He's just trying to follow his heart, learning what it takes to be a good man, but life just keeps throwing obstacles in the way - not least of which is Tytus Broz, legendary Brisbane drug dealer.

But if Eli's life is about to get a whole lot more serious. He's about to fall in love. And, oh yeah, he has to break into Boggo Road Gaol on Christmas Day, to save his mum.

A story of brotherhood, true love and the most unlikely of friendships, Boy Swallows Universe will be the most heartbreaking, joyous and exhilarating novel you will read all year."

Maybe middle/later teens. Have to confess I haven't read it but it seems like it's got some reasonably adult themes.

I wouldn't give it to anyone under 16.
        Historical low is $7.65

I would suggest 16+. A lot of the themes would require maturity to understand/infer meaning from (I'm not implying that age = maturity).

Some schools use this novel in their Senior English studies. It's a decent read - almost autobiographical in nature.

I read boys swallows and stopped at the title.

In other regions, it's called Boy Consumes Universe.

@The Value: I like that because it reminds me of capitalism and how I am a consumer. Thanks, Bezos!

Been this price at Big W for a while.

I picked it up due to several recommendations about 2 months ago and it has put me on to fiction. Normally I read philosophy, psychology, etc., but this book has elements of that in the context of an Australian story.

Pretty great read. 500ish pages long, but never felt like a chore.

      You better not get it.

This comment alone suggests the content may be a bit mature for you

A bit of a slow burn at the start. But I really enjoyed the build up and the character development. Highly recommend.

If you're only planning on reading it once, just borrow from your local public library. They might even have a free ebook/audiobook version you can stream on one of their partnered services like OverDrive, Libby, Hoopla, etc.

    • Good suggestion. Got it free with free Audible subscription.

  • Read this recently, it was actually quite good - would recommend it

  • Great read. Probably my favourite book of 2018

  • +1

Is this book about Scott Morrison?

  • Loved this book! Includes some cheeky references to places in Brisbane, would definitely recommend if you're from there :)

  • Usual price at Big W. Ripping read. Beautifully written and then in the third act totally turns plot on its head.
