    $388.74 for plus members

  • Good price but couldn't get it to work with a TPG FTTC

    • FTTC is VDSL to the house? These don't have VDSL modem I believe

      • +7

FTTC handoff is ethernet via the NBN NCD

TPG require a VLAN tag on the internet interface which is what OP might have been missing.

Apologies if already tried this. Have you tried resetting the nbn connection device? Or asking tpg to do a port reset from their end.

I had a similar issue with the old udm (my fttc was flaky) and either or both of those actions fixed it.

      • Also TPG tends want you to use their modem/routers which are configured to use VLAN tagging so if you don't want to run the UDR downstream of the TPG modem/router (and have a double-NAT scenario) then you can try: 1) Plug the UDR directly to the NBN box (bypassing any TPG modem/router) 2) In the UDR, under Settings / Internet / VLAN ID setting the VLAN ID to "2" and enabling it 3) Make sure your username/password are entered on the same screen. 4) You may also need to have the port/connection reset from the TPG end.

P.S. Of course if you bypass the TPG modem/router you then lose the ability to have your phone number as TPG won't give you the settings to configure NBN VoIP.

        • Did all that including setting it to PPOE mode with username/password. However I didn't contact TPG to reset the port/connection.

Could of been a defective UDR as it was a PITA to setup. Which is a shame because it seemed like a great product and has some amazing functionality. Dont use VOIP so dont care.

@Bid Sniper: Need to make sure you use VLAN 2 for the WAN Network and "username"@l2tp.tpg.com.au for the username and your TPG password. Works fine with a FTTC NBN box direct to UDR.

            • @HoochieMamma: @l2tp.tpg.com.au

Is this correct? and not "username"@tpg.com.au, Im about to rage here

              • +1

@Bid Sniper: It's what I use and my parents use. I use a UDM-PRO and they have a UDR. It's been like that since I can remember. So yes, use @l2tp.tpg.com.au

If you have an Archer VR1600v TPG router (possibly other model can as well) you can flash a custom firmware on it, extract the VoIP details and then use it in a 3rd party ATA box. I did this for my parents when I got them a UDR. I used a PoE splitter that splits off 5v to MicroUSB to power the ATA as well from the UDR. Works a treat.

          • @HoochieMamma: Thanks! I had been looking for a lot of these details for a long time - so one site I am responsible for where they need the phone line is still stuck on double-NAT. Any further details on where to get the custom firmware?

    • +1

i have setup several on FttC, just need to have it set to DHCP or if you are using TPG/AAPT, you may need to put IP and VLAN details in.
FttC is just an ethernet handoff.

    • Did you do the TPG vlan?

  • Considering the lifespan of these devices is at least a few years, I think it's a shame they didn't include >1G connectivity. A 2.5G or 10G port for an uplink to another switch would have really made this device an instant buy.

    • I agree, especially with wifi6 support.

And one more thing need to take into account, it is unavailable to provide a full speed of NAT in 1000Mbps download bandwidth. As the CPU is downgraded from UDM. But still enough for most of Aus nbn. Can reach about 700-900Mbps from my memory read from others’ comments.
It might be improved in the future by upgrade the firmware

    • Probabily cheaper to buy a 2.5Gb switch and add it on than this would be if they included 2.5Gb

All up about $560 for this plus a 5 port 2.5gb switch.

More likely though, they don't want to butcher UDM Pro sales

  • Thanks for this, I've been looking at this router for a while now! I'd love the UDM Pro but it's just a bit out of my price range. This should be good though!

  • Is the general consensus to use the internet providers modem in bridge mode and use this as the router/wifi in a FTTN setup?
I am coming from FTTP to FTTN so haven't needed a modem in-between in the past…

    • I don't know if there is a general concensus per se, but if you don't need the NBN VoIP service, then I wouldn't even bother having the ISP's modem there at all doing nothing, and instead just plug the NBN connection straight into the UDR WAN port. One less device for things to go wrong, one less device consuming power.

      • -1

You need a modem for FTTN. So no, you can't just have the UDR

    • That's why I do for Exetel NBN with my USG-3P

  • Is there anything that this router can do but an Asus router can't?

    • +5

      work properly

    • +3

Add more APs to expand the wifi network
      And PoE
      And better security settings
      And better monitoring
      Especially more stable (I think)

Asus only support more routers based on wired or wireless mesh

      • I agree. Better security settings and better monitoring definitely.

  • I have this and it’s been great the last few years

    • +1

You have the UDM with Wi-Fi 5. Ubiquiti UDR is the new updated model with Wi-Fi 6.

      • +1

        Update for the wifi
        Downgrade the cpu

      • Oh yeah that’s right.

  • +1

Compared to the UniFi Dream Machine (UDM), the UniFi Dream Router (UDR):

    • Downgrades from a quad-core to a dual-core ARM CPU
    • Upgrades to Wi-Fi 6 on it’s 4x4 5 GHz radio. The 2.4 GHz radio is 4x4 802.11n.
    • Adds UniFi Protect, Talk and Access support. Only one of these can be run at a time, in addition to the built-in UniFi Network application.
    • Adds two 802.3af (15W) PoE out ports
    • Adds 128 GB of internal storage, which can be used for motion recording only with Protect
    • Adds An SD card slot for storage expansion
    • Costs $100 less — $199 US MSRP
