It doesn't actually say online, but my guess is that this is the M616T model, not the newer M681T. I don't know if there is an older model that this deal could be for. It also doesn't say 4K compatible but I'm pretty sure it would be.
No remote listed under "What's in the box", but there is one in the picture.

Some might comment that this won't be the new updated box. My previous generation, or maybe previous previous generation Fetch coz I've had it for a few years, works absolutely fine with no lag or UI delay.

I much prefer this to the TV's UI.

    • Mine Arrived today. Its the Gen 3 Box but came with a Bluetooth voice remote. Much better Program guide than my Samsung TV. Still diving into it but happy for the 99 dollar price tag :-) . Also, upgraded the remote software via the remote settings app

  • +3

Bought one a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with the purchase!

    • yep, mine 'appeared' new
      bought another
just need to see if possible to put kayo on it
      .

      • That would be handy… I use an Nvidia Shield for Kayo and Plex etc works well

        • i'm stuck with xbox via kodi currently, in the rumpus room
          .

  • Got one of these last week. Remote was sticky AF

  • +1

Yes. It's the old model. I bought one on this deal a week or so ago. I have had a mighty for a quite few years and very recently it's started to play up once a week or so of late (no video on recording playback, sluggish UI, fixed by reboot or running diagnostics). It's probably the drive. 99 bucks for a replacement/supplement is a great deal. The new box came as new, in full retail packaging.

The old mighty is still a fine box. The UI is much faster than the non 4K fetch mini. I had a couple of free rentals from fetch and I used one for the the new top gun movie. It played faultlessly on my LG C1 OLED in 4k and hdr. I needed a sick bag for the film though….

    • What exactly is the old model? I have the previous generation FetchTV box from 2015. It has a hard drive and can record, but I believe outputs 1080p only.

Is the old model this one, or was there another update recently?

      • +1

This will be the M616T. It does 4K.

    • You can open them up and replace the hard drive with a larger one
the operating system is stuck on the board like a bios is
After a new hard drive is installed it will reinstall everything to do with the latest firmware and away you go
I didn't try a ssd at the time when i had one but yes you can replace the hard drive.

      • Thanks. I'll probably try a new hard drive once we've watched what is recorded on the old box. Fetch wanted me to try a full factory reset but the family didn't want to lose all the recordings. I have an old 1tb av drive in my collection. That will probably do the job.

      • In my experience, you can't do this and have tested as a matter of interest. You can't add a 2TB and seems limited to 1TB. They are also picky about which drive and by default come with Western Digital WD10EURX Green Power 1TB Internal Hard Drives.

I tested by adding a Seagate 1TB (no go) and also a WD Green 2TB, also a no go. Regardless, it is nice that replacing a drive is possible with these units if existing fails. Many PVR's link the HDD to the BIOS and can't be swapped out easily.

        • PVRs generally use a CE rated HDD for video - handles the large amount of data faster (instead of needing slower error checking used in computer HDD).

Three questions for those that already have one:

    1) How much power do these use (in use and standby)?

    2) Can you export the recorded files or view them on other devices through your home network?

    3) Does the PVR recording have a keyword or series function?

    Thanks

    • +1

You can view recordings on other devices using Kodi.
PVR has series link, not sure about keyword.
We have used for a number of years now, works very well.

    • +1

      1) See below
      2) Can't export… or can you?
      3) Series but not keyword

    • +1

      1) not sure
      2) I’ve done it… it was a bit convoluted but definitely is possible… need some degree (but not too much ) of technical ability
      3) series record yes…u can keyword search for a topic and will bring up hits in the current TV guide /rental store/catchup data. but I don’t think u can enter a keyword in perpetuity, ie so a future movie would match the saved keywords (if that makes sense)

      Cheers

      • What are you using to export? I assume it's some kind of DLNA software?

        • Apparently - can onlu transfer FTA recordings, not recordings from streaming services.

    • +1

For number 2 - I don't know how but windows PCs on my network pick up the recordings as a drive automatically. They are connected via wifi not ethernet and I didn't do anything specifically to set it up.

  • +2

PVR feels like a "blast from the past" here. They were awesome back before broadband internet, and on-demand services such as FreeView and Netflix. When free-to-air was not all infomercials and "reality" TV.

So what are people using them for now? Sports would be the big use now, I guess?
Are they any good for advert-skipping. MythTV was very good at that, back in the day.

    • +2

I record all of the news (5PM channel 10, 6pm channel 7), and when we start dinner (any time between 5 and 7) I watch the most recent one. That's literally my only use-case but it's worth it for that. SVOD doesn't time shift and you need to wait for the show to end before it's posted.

    • I use mine primarily for the premium channels. Way cheaper than Foxtel, downside is not much sports on the premium channels apart from ESPN, BeIN, Optus Sport (but I hardly watch sport anyway apart from Tennis which is covered by ESPN).

Catch-up content is decent, easy enough interface to skip commercials, support is Australian based and prompt to reply.

    • +1

On-demand PQ is rubbish and full of ads (although there are workarounds.)
Time shifting and/or skipping ads is main feature.
I also get all the channels (free.)
      Don't use it for sport.
It also has most of the (high quality) streaming services support.

      • I also get all the channels (free.)

        how? which? what?

        • Name checks out.

Been with Optus for 18 years - have ended up with 100/40 Internet, land-line, 2 Fetch's and all the channels for $90/month*.

*Actually, just checked my last bill - it mysteriously went up $5. Not sure what to do…

          • @McFly: yours is just bundled. my optus 100/40 is only $75 (used to be $70).

            • @askbargain: So yours went up too last month?

If you can show me a similar deal (commensurately priced) to the one I'm getting now but with faster speed I'm all ears!

              • @McFly: mine went up a few months ago, i was grandfathered into the plan.

    • +1

Another benefit would be the Fetch Mini can only pause live TV for 15 mins however the Mighty much longer than that maybe a few hours. To be honest I quite like that feature as can pause go off and do something, come back watch it and not miss anything then fast forward the ads to get back to real time.

    • I used the so my parents have a standarised GUI for all TVs they have

    • I just bought one of these ($199) last month. I use it to record AFL, the odd movie and my wife records a few home shows she likes. We've always had PVRs, can't stand watching ads and FTA sport is my main use. And Rage.

For footy it's great, easy to fast forward to watch Carlton throw their season away etc. Have previously had Topfield/Beyondwiz and I do miss the ad skipping button - Fetch is fast forward/rewind (up to 32x with a rollback on the high speed) but not as good as the custom 30 sec forward/8 sec back I had setup before. That's all I'm missing really. I did used to transfer stuff to the PC but haven't needed to for years.

Also easy to control netflix using the Fetch, though still use Chromecast for Disney/Prime as I haven't got a 4K TV and my receiver doesn't seem to play nice with the HDMI and I'm too lazy to work that out.

    • +2

Have been using a Fetch Mighty since 2018.

      Pros:

      • easy to use, big WAF. I used to have Topfields of all sorts in the prior 10 years but setting timers and managing misbehaving apps sometimes felt like programming assembler compared to this
      • good local knowledgebase, company seems to be stable
      • apps for just about every streaming service there is, so no changing AV inputs to another box or a Chromecast (though still have one for some stuff)
      • big HDD with tuners galore so can record lots of different stuff at the same time.. though definitely less FTA is worth recording these days
      • heaps of weird and wonderful channels that I've noticed come in
      • useful improvements with version updates.. eg back button becoming previous channel recall is a boon

      Cons:

      • runs hot and probably costing me lots in power from reading other comments here
      • ad skipping not as good as the old Toppy. Fastest way I found for most interminable ad breaks is to use the right arrow button to skip forward 5 minutes, then backtrack
      • I keep it on 24/7, despite this (or maybe because of?), about once every two months the box freezes, need to physically pull the power out to reboot it

I initially resisted going to Fetch due to the ad skipping thing but quickly found other good things that far outweighed that con.

      • No Kayo app though is there? That is a massive downside as is my most used app for Motorsport. One has to resort to a different device just for it.

        • Yeah agree, probably most glaring omission. I switch over to a Chromecast for Binge myself.

Not sure if Rupert's streaming services will ever come to Fetch, lots of forum chit chat discussing the why/why-nots of it

  • +8

Biggest fail for me with these boxes is the power consumption as there is no standby and run at approx 16 Watts 24/7 which is mad. I leave mine unplugged which defeats the purpose hence returned to my older PVR which in standby is around 3w.

Not a big deal if power is of no concern to you though. Price is decent.

    • +1

So it uses about .384Kwh per day or about 10c a day or $37/year depending on where in australia you live (and keeping in mind that much of that could be solar self consumption or off-peak consumption)

      • +6

Multiple that by all the boxes across Australia and that’s why the whales are dying.

        • you are saying that on a forum dedicated to consumption.

        • Really? I thought STB power consumption was why the polar bears are dying.

    • +2

Yeah, I find it beyond ridiculous that the hard drive is always spinning.
When I first got it I thought it was faulty!

      • Can you swap in a ssd?

        • I guess you could, but mine's owned by Optus.
Also not sure using an SSD for constant recording is such a good idea.

          • @McFly: I doubt it as they are picky with the model/brand one can change with. I have tested a few for the sake of interest a while back. Regardless, it would probably kill a SSD quickly with the constant writing /deleting of data.

      • Seriously? I've only used Beyonwiz which doesn't do that stupidity. Drive only runs when in use (recording/viewing)

    • Thanks for sharing this, its really bad.

    • +2

I've had one for years. My cats sleep on it in winter, it doubles as a heat mat!

  • How are these as a media player? Hoping to use it to play downloaded movies & tv off a hard drive on an old dumb tv.

    • It has a usb port you can plug in a USB or drive

    • USB port takes thumb drives and hard drives. Can also play files over network using DLNA. And it has the Plex app. Personally I have an 8TB drive full of movies and shows on a server elsewhere in the house, and access them all via Plex.

    • They are generally ok as a media player. The built in media player isn't great, but it now has a Plex client which is decent. You can set up your PC as a Plex server and stream files directly to the Fetch. Alternatively you can plug a USB hard drive straight in to the Fetch. You can also access most of the paid streaming services through Fetch like Netflix and Disney+, but not Kayo. There are better streaming devices on the market than Fetch, but it does the job. It's main strengths are as a PVR.

      • Just need it to play mkv 265 upto 2gb in size smoothly and be easy for a 60yo to navigate :)

        • +1

Deals gone now so my input is probably irrelevant, but I find the fetch media player to be very capable. It plays 20gb 2160p mkv's without any complaint. I was really surprised by it. They didn't skimp on ntfs support either, which makes things so much easier.

Only found one real problem with it, and that's audio track selection. I don't think you can do it

          • @outlander: Thanks a lot. I'll keep checking back for more stock

    • Pretty sure the first step is to put your credit card number in, so youd want to be using it as more than a media player.

      • There's a one-off $1 fee to setup your Fetch account, there's no ongoing billing after that initial dollar.

        • You can see they've got great ethics from the get-go

  • Does anyone know if you can watch optus sport in 4k with these?

    • they are 4k supported - not sure about OS tho

    • No 4k optus sport.

      • They only have 720p
        And now they charging $7

        • Wait, so if I already have an optus subscription can I not just use this to watch it on my Tv instead of chromecasting?

          • @polarcatman: Ifu have Optus app on tv, yes u can.. I'm using Optus given fetch box to what OS

  • i have an old optus one that i failed to send back when i was moving houses and they cahrged me $300 for that. Is there anyway i can reset it and use it?

    • No.

    • +3

No unfortunately. Another disgraceful thing about these. So many just make it to landfill as they cannot be reused or sold on. Only the retail version like noted here is unlocked.

    • +2

No, ISP boxes are locked to the provider. Once you cancel the service they become a door stop.

  • We still have a Humax and IceTV sub for the EPG (yes I know, streaming blah blah, but my better half is still locked into recording TV programmes and it makes my life easier not having to explain which streaming service her programme is on!).

Would this be an upgrade, or just don't bother?

    Thanks

    • +1

Didn't think Ice would still be going!
I used it on my Beyonwiz's (which I still have) but don't really use anymore. The Fetch is faster, has more storage, more tuners, and better/modern UI/features, but I still miss the custom skip time function (Fetch is 5 minutes fixed.)
I would think the same would apply to your Humax.

      • I think Ice is surviving off my sole subscription… it doesn't matter really we have the Humax set up which causes the least hassle in the house.. will keep paying the sub.. 👍

We used to have Tivo in the UK, loved that thing!

    • +2

Upgrade. I used to have a IceTV sub as well, but when they went down, kept my money, then resurrected again there was no way I was going back to that mob. This is a better all round experience. Series linking which the IceTV spruiked as their best feature works well on Fetch so no need to have a separate sub just for your EPG. The only thing I missed it being able to set up my week's schedule on the computer. The Fetch Mobi app is also a bit crap to view the epg. I use the EPG on the fetch box to setup my week now.

      • OUT OF STOCK

        FML 🤣

IceTV get my subscription for another day!

  • +1

It is M616T , it was sold out few days ago (previous deal : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/723702) and looks like back it stock

    • +1

This is the mighty not the mini, different deal?

  • -1

What are FTA channels like, are they all 1080p?

    • +1

I think the quality of the content is much more important than the resolution. I'd say about 240p in that regards

      • +1

SBS movies and docos are kinda good though

  • Can this be used with C band receptors?

    • +1

      no, Satellite is DVB-S / DVB-S2, terrestrial is DVB-T / DVB-T2

  • Anyone know this fetch box will fixed the TV keep loosing signal?

    • It is unlikely to fix reception issues. The fetch isn't known to be great when there is poor reception, so it could actually make your problem worse. You will need to look at your aerial setup.

      • Thanks

  • Can I just clarify that NO REMOTE is included with this? So how do you operate the box without a remote?

    • +1

It is included. I don't know what it's omitted from the list of inclusions.

      • Cheers mate, just ordered one. We have an older setup of cheap Topfield PVR and a Firestick - have wanted to try one of these to bring it back to a single box/device, and for $99 that's a cheap way to give it a go!! :)

    • Not sure. I've ordered one so I'll find out soon enough!
There's no remote listed under "What's in the box", but there is a remote in the picture.
Doesn't really matter for me as our TV remote works as a universal remote for our existing Fetch box.

    • +1

Remotes are easy to get, not that expensive, and the Bluetooth one is better.

  • I have one unit but need activation. How to activate it?

  • Wondering about this as a potential replacement for my MythTV setup. Still have MythTV - but I karked the power supply about 2 months ago and haven't gotten around to replacing it. Wondering whether this may be a better option now. Less maintenance - and 1TB is a decent amount of space. However, what I like about MythTV is that I can watch it using the Android TV app on any TV in my house - and I have all my own custom searches set up and find it very convenient to program my recordings using the web server rather than the TV frontend. It is also very easy to cut ads out and keep the recordings. We have multiple streaming services, which the rest of the family watches, but I still like finding and recording - and keeping - interesting shows on TV - and major sports events. There is often a lot of interesting stuff, usually docos, on TV, that you don't get on the streaming services. Sounds like editing and retraining recordings is not very straightforward with the Fetch (?) Seems like there isn't much of a use case for a FetchBox for me then, it seems. Any contrary views or advice on that?
