I assume being from the UK it uses phonetics more akin to us in Australia than other US style apps (eg. "zed" rather than "zee"). If anyone knows of any good Aussie apps for similar, I'd love to hear!

Thanks OP, have downloaded to give it a go.

      Reading Eggs?

My son likes Teach Your Monster to Read but has worked out he can just guess, remember the incorrect answers, and then pick the correct one.

    • We have a sub to reading eggs but also this app. Son seems to prefer this app atm, hard to justify the sub cost of reading eggs when that's the case but he will probably switch back and forward.

meh.. it's the same 4 minigames over and over and it doesn't really do much when it comes to recognising letters. there's the touch the sound (which makes sense) then the ducks in the pond, the towers which, as an adult, took me a minute to learn properly, and the "sonic the hedgehog" style which just stressed the eff outta my kid.

Only thing it's got for it is the price.. or lack thereof.

Get bob's books reading magic #1 and 2.

    • I like some things about the app but feel the same way. Most of the minigames could be improved. My son has learned he can just let that sonic-style minigame just run until eventually it lines up right. He doesn't have the reflexes to jump at the right time even if he does figure it out fast enough.

  • Reading is overrated. As long as there's decent supporting school which is supplemented by parents at home, all the reading skills plateau out eventually.
Comprehension and vocabulary are more important. Read a simple book with them and test their understanding. Diverge and elaborate.
Then again it's much more pleasing to see a kid having fun on these or reading eggs instead of YouTube.

  • Got it on a previous deal, my son (now almost 9) loves it and still plays it sometimes!
