Glenfiddich IPA Experiment & Lagavulin 16 Year Old Bundle $187.9 ($183.2 with eBay Plus) Delivered @ BoozeBud eBay

350
SVE20PLSAV22

So, the Nant/Lagavulin I posted yesterday went quickly… I was going to sleep on it and buy today, but I obviously slept too long.

Since I've slept and was like "Yeah, I want a bottle of Lagavulin" I figured I'd look for another deal.

This one seems pretty reasonable, since the Laga is $180 by itself from most places like Dans (as noted yesterday).
Consequently, you're practically getting the IPA Experiment for free, right? That's totally how it works… :D

The IPA experiment is a probably the biggest question mark, but push-comes-to-shove, if you know you don't like it you can surely gift it to someone as a "nice bottle of whiskey". :)

Glenfiddich IPA Experiment is $130 at store

i think this is good price thanks

I often wonder if that's a bit inflated. The last bottle I bought for <$80.

As an aside, have whisky prices just exploded recently? Like, I noticed a number of people saying (like me), when did Laga hit the $180 price point?

I noticed also, it's not just Whisk(e)y's since I recall bottles like the Ron Zacapa XO used to be about $140-150ish?
      It's now $200 and up…

If you are a rum drinker, this deal for Plantation Grande Reserve & Santa Teresa 1796 is very good as it's about the same price as most places are selling the Santa Teresa for (plus postage) and cheaper than Boozebud has it listed on their website (and comes with another decent bottle). Only 7 available at time of posting though.

      • yeah I notice

but I was so keen on the Lagavulin 16 Year Old so I had to pull the trigger :|

      • Talisker 10 has gone up a bit as well (used to be able to get it for around 80 at dan's, now 110 by the looks of it), but yeah laga 16 is just off the planet. i don't think there's any point in buying it anymore when there are so many other good islays around (hell you can get uigeadail cheaper).

        • I normally get Laphroaig 10 or quarter cask, Lagavulin 8, ardberg 10 or Talisker 10 when Lagavulin 16 isn't on sale.

          Any other options to recommend?

          • +1

@marantz: hell yeah, all awesome picks imo. when you're feeling keen i'd definitely recommend trying first ardbeg uigeadail and then later corryvreckan. Uigeadail is around 54% abv and still peated but finished in sherry casks, whereas corry is around 57% basically just straight up peat and pepper. Both delicious, but i'd say corryvreckan would be my favourite drop under $200 - it's amazing.

          • @marantz: Glendronach traditionally peated I enjoy, and still a reasonable price. Still classic glendronach sherry but a nice hit of peat thrown in.

Don't buy laga 16 any more at its current price, ardbeg uigeadail much better at that price imo. but might bite at this price. The ipa isn't bad.

I just impulse purchased that rum bundle 😅

        • +2

Hahahaha, I did likewise after seeing it. I love the Plantation bottle for a rum based old fashioned.
I'm looking forward to trying the Santa Teresa… I should've opened the unopened bottle I have before ordering another, but impulse buys don't allow for such luxuries (particularly this early in the morning).

As whisky drinkers you just need to be a wiser consumer. Laga, Talisker etc are owned by giant alcohol companies, and their objective is to build a market and then charge what they can (i.e. raising prices). Lagavulin isn't what it was a few years ago, and yet it literally costs twice the price. It's all marketing for them. You need to explore new and different distilleries. For example, Kilchoman Sanaig is about $110, and is a delicious comparison to Laga. Get into the scene a bit more and you'll see that you need to just stay ahead of the curb. If everyone starts talking about a whisky, chances are it will go up and up pretty soon!

        • I'm also looking for alternatives so appreciate these posts. @HeretoBrew - I tried the Kilchoman Sanaig on the recommendation of a friend. To me it is quite a bit sharper than Lagavulin. May be partly because it is 46% ABV vs Laga at 43%. However, not sure, as Laphroaig, probably the sharpest and peatiest of all is only 40%.I tasted Talisker 10 recently and did like it, so may buy that next and then perhaps the Laga 8 yo. Nobody has mentioned Caol Ila, which I have not tried before, but I do like JW Green Label (another dram that has shot up in price) which has Caol Ila in the blend. Any comments on what it is like as an alternative?

          • @belbo: Which Caol Ila are you talking about?

If you're talking about the 12yo I highly recommend it as a nice intro into peat and sweet. It has a mineral rubber type peat smoke but has a good length apple honey sweetness. Not too bitey or prickly in my opinion.

JW Green 15 is a great choice. The best of the core range.

Kilchoman have a very vast range of bottlings. The Sanaig is a bourbon and sherry cask vatting (blend) which might impart extra harshness if that particular year's release is dryer/more tannin and Oloroso casks can add that dry bitterness too (every year is slightly different).

Caol ila Distillers Edition is a nice one if you like more sweetness. I think it's the 12yo but extra time in sweet sherry casks. On a side note the Caol ila unpeated range (eg 18yo) is really really good. Malty, viscous and sweet.

  • Yeah. The IPA cask is pretty horrible. Maybe gift it to someone you don't really like ;)

Glenfiddich is always very easy drinking scotch IMO. I have the IPA experiment and its certainly a decent dram, though don't expect anything mirraculous from it.. There's no 'IPA flavour' hints from what I can tell. It has a subtle zest to it but nothing obnoxious. Overall I'd say its just another subtly different take on the Glenfiddich product, which is always easy to enjoy.
Lagavulin on the other hand is incredible, but its not what I'd call an 'easy' drink to enjoy at all.. Very punchy flavour profile thats really unique.

    • Glenfiddich is so average. Even their 18 is like, 'what did I pay for?'. And Lagavulin is pretty entry-level when it comes to introducing peat to people. It's a sherry matured peated whisky. 'Really unique?', I'm not so sure.

EDIT: Sorry, I hate to troll, but sometimes it's good to challenge your tastes.

      • Not sure why you got negs, but I agree with your comment about their 18yo, overpriced and underwhelming. Same with the 21 Gran Reserva. Their core range from 12 to 21 are nothing special but a good beginners entry. The 15yo CS DE is the only core one I'd go back for, or their annual cask collections.

But overall they are pretty easy drinking, can't argue with that.

Drink what you like, the way you like it.

      • Not sure why you were neg’d there either.. (wasn’t me).
Taste is always subjective, for something with a powerful flavour profile such as Lagavulin, I find it (or found) it quite unique, particularly compared to many other drams I’ve sampled over the years. I like it, but don’t love it. I’m not big on whisky with a big smoke and iodine profile.
If you like smoke, Laphroiag is a good starting point, or Connemara is also good!

I typically like the Spey side style scotch, or Japanese whisky, with a softer profile.

I actually don’t think Nant is all that great to be honest.. Its very good, but probably not at its price point. I prefer Lark in that <$200 price point, or Hellyer’s Road for around $100.

For those curious though, this deal is a great way to sample some high quality whisky without busting the budget. If I hadn’t already tried these I’d be all over it. Enjoy the exploration!

      • Just to add, regarding peat I'd probably be recommending something less weighty to a beginner, such as Talisker 10 or even JW 12 Black (which includes Talisker and Laga anyway).

Yes, Nant isn't that great. Lark is better but most of their core range is only ok/good (except their CS), and being on Ozb you have to consider they are 500ml bottlings as well so you have to consider $/vol.

  • Not a whisky connoisseur or anything here but I enjoyed the IPA, especially since I picked it up for $69 from Amazon during flash sale last year.

    Thanks, I hate you.

  • I already bought Lagavulin + Nant… Not a big fan of Glenfiddich but the deal looks great. Maybe i can convince my wife to buy this as 2nd birthday gift

    • +1

Or maybe you can ask your second wife to get it as your 1st birthday gift

      • Lagavulin + Nant is my self birthday gift :D. Told the wife that, Hey i bought this for myself for the coming birthday

      • Or just don't tell either of your wives. That's my strategy!

        • Or, you buy them their favourite alcohol too…

      • It'll cost a lot more to get a second wife

  • For an "experimental" the Glenfiddich IPA seems to have had a lot of stock, still everywhere after 6 years. The Winter Storm variant sold out in no time but all the others seem like permanent staples, not the limited edition runs they were meant to be.

Granted, it could just be a huge money maker for them. No age statement and they chuck it in some IPA barrels for 3 months and sell it for $130 a bottle. That's a decent money maker.

Wow I last bought Lagavulin 16 in this deal back in Dec 2020(with 10% Xmas team member code + 22% shopback cashback + 4000 flybuys points)
Came down to $94.46 (price after team member discount) - $21 shopback cashback (confirmed) - $20 (flybuys dollars) = $53.46

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/592445

Shows how expensive this deal still is.
The IPA experiment is worth $69 or so (was on Amazon for that price not long back)

Whiskinflation is massive. I remember can get Lagavulin at Dan's for 80-100 any day without promo, now it is 150 160+.

      • +1

Lagavulin 16 at 80 was always promo price, RRP has always been $100+ for Lagavulin 16. Lagavulin 8 is/was of course much cheaper

        • Fair enough, the last time i looked at lagavulin rrp was probably around 110 back in 2017. Now rrp is 160 which is insane. I recalled some really great bottle like Dalmore Cigar Malt around 140 back then, now it is 200+.

  • +5

    i'll wait for a 2 lagavulins for $180 deal

  • Great thread.

I don’t need to drink another larga, I’ll try out a few more niche bottles

  • +1

    Received already, happy days!

Great timing for the upcoming VIC long long weekend 🥳
