  • How's the noise levels on these?
Lot of reports out there about noisy Iron Wolves compared to WD reds?

    Thanks

    • +4

I have the ironwolf pro 18 tbs and they have a pretty 'loud' bass to them when the head moves. I wouldn't keep them in or even a bit near any living space.

      • What case have you got them in?
I run some exos and IronWolf 8tb in my Node 804, and I suspect because they all have dampening and rubber grommets the noise is very reasonable, and only when random seeking.

Are they screwed directly into a metal chassis?

        • +1

It's the case. I also have that case and I don't hear a peep out of it although I only have WD Reds in it.

        • Have a node 304 and same here, they’re very reasonable, barely ever notice it and it is in the living room. The WD Red inside my WD Cloud Home is far louder.

OK thanks. Got the WD plus 8tb instead, it's on special as well, $275.

  • Free delivery? It wants me to create an account before I can see shipping costs.

    • Mine was.

    • They have free delivery on orders over $150 at the moment

  • Can I use these without NAS and add them in NAS later, once I buy it.

    • +3

You can, but I think when you chuck it into a NAS, the NAS will want to format the drive. You might end up losing data unless you back that up elsewhere

    • +1

Depends on the partition requirements of the NAS and if you plan on using it in a RAID configuration.

You can shuck a WD Elements 12 TB for 363, and it will be quieter than the Seagate:

I bought mine for 270something some time ago, and am waiting for the price to come down further.

  • Just bought some. Thanks OP

  • What is a good reason to buy these 10TB's instead of this 12TB for cheaper?

    • I'd be concerned they would ship the bare drive without padding.

    • The seller, mainly.

Those are not sold and shipped by Mwave, from a brand new seller. Not verified Australian stock either.
