Anyone Have Experience with Honey Insurance?

At first I wondered if it was associated with the discount browser extension, then I found out it's an RACQ sub brand, or issued by them.

The notion of installing smart home sensors to reduce your premium is appealing, and the quote (for my own circumstances), represents a higher level of insurance for a lower premium than loathsome Suncorp, who I cannot wait to ditch.

Anyone dealt with Honey or use their product?

The sensors are handy. You can see when your door has been opened or what the temperature is inside at home. I signed up when they had the $500 gift card.

Anyone have a made a claim through them though?

This is the real test of any insurance provider.

      Read the pds

      • I did, seems identical to every other one. Standard exclusions etc etc.

    • Yes going through it now
No issues at all….. So far

Just waiting for repairs to go ahead but they've been approved

Just another way they can collect more information to reject your claim.

      Direct quote from the website

Is smart home sensor data used in the processing of claims?

No smart home sensor data is used in the processing of claims. The sensors are there to help alert you to potential mishaps before they escalate. That’s the beauty of the sensors, they’re able to let you know about door openings, water leaks, and smoke alarms, to help de-risk your home in order for you to claim less. They’re there for your safety, savings and peace of mind.

Obviously privacy was at the forefront of my consideration, so reading that is reassuring. Seems prevention > cure in their mind.

If you bothered to read the details it specifically says that the data is not used to process claims. But hey let's make stuff up instead.

  • Im in FNQ. Their quote with discount was $8300 a year. Sure does it for $3000

    • They really didn't want to insure you for some reason.

Same with cars/motorbikes if they really don't want to insure a particular person (maybe a 20 year old with a WRX STI) they'll give them a $10k a year policy quote.

    • It's strange isn't it, how some insurers are massively skewed compared to others. Budget Direct wanted $6600 for my place versus Honey's $1800. Pays to shop around!

    They have some sweet deals.

150% more expensive than Coles (backed by IAG) even with the 8% discount (inner-city Melbourne, not in a flood-prone area nor fire prone). Their house classifying system also had a bunch of wrong data points about my property, when I was shopping around different insurance companies - they were all mostly accurate.

I'd go with a cheaper insurer and buy some sensors.

I made a claim through Coles in my first year, and they were ridiculously fast in servicing it. Had someone out the next day.

    • Thanks for the feedback. I realised the other day I never cancelled my insurance on our previous PPOR, rang up Coles Insurance and they were ridiculously helpful in arranging a refund for the previous 11 months that we paid for but didn't use. Might give them a second look.

      • WOW! That's INSANE!

  • Any recent feedback or experiences?
