[VIC] Masterbuilt 800 Charcoal Smoker $1099.99 @ Costco Moorabbin (Membership Required)

360

Good price for the Masterbuilt 800 I reckon as it goes for $1,599 at bbqs galore (although there is a promo atm). If you want one you'll need a trailer though, the boxes are massive and heavy - 95kg.

Available for $1,199.99 delivered @ https://www.costco.com.au/BBQs-Outdoor-Living/Barbecues-Smok…

keep in mind this doesnt have the griddle.
That being said, I wouldn't say the griddle is worth the extra cost

    • Do you have one? Recommended?

What do you make most on it?

    • Huh, it doesn't? On the Masterbuilt website it says it does

Edit: And the barbeques galore one lists the griddle… I'll be peeved if it doesn't - I just bought one!

Seems like the one sold by Costco is stripped down =(

        • if its stripped down it has to be a different model number

          • @Areyouabus: Will find out when I receive it I guess. Not many details on their website

Can you explain the significance of the griddle

        • +2

The griddle is a cast iron plate like that which you find on a conventional bbq

    • +1

Griddle is great if you like to do smashed patties open it up and crank the heat to 700F. Mmmmmmm

Decent price. It's almost impossible to get a smoker for a good price in Australia. We get ripped off so much compared to the prices in the US.

Especially when they clearance them out at Walmart. Unbelievably good deals every single year.

Same story everywhere else outside the US. I was in KSA last week, for a weber you have to sell a kidney

one of my mates has one, always cooking brisket, chicken wings, beef cheeks and ribs. they come out perfect every time but they do take a long time to cook. Worth it if you think you will use it. He uses his at least once - twice a month works really well and he swears by it.

I think the time it takes to cook is in different to the type of smoker haha

    • beef cheeks on the smoker, unbelievably good!

  • I have the 560 and its a good unit once you get past the dodgy door switches. Pretty much needs a burn off after ever cook otherwise anything at higher heat will cause a fat fire.

    • There's mods around that solve this somewhat…DUF are pretty solid: https://www.facebook.com/DownUnderFab/

      • Yeah wouldnt be hard to knock something up, but out of the box its not ideal.

Yeah it's just a matter of keeping it clean. I've had 3 reasonably large grease fires, all my own fault. Last one took out the cooking chamber switch. Bought 3 of em from AliExpress and good as gold again.

Use the thing 2-3 times a week. Love it.

Great piece of kit, have done everything on it from low and slow briskets to hot and fast smash patty burgers. Even made a nice siu yuk, going a try doing a roast duck next. Having charcoal flavour and heat but convenience of automation is a God save.

  • How does this go for ultra high heat sear?

Currently have a Traeger pellet smoker for brisket and a Weber genisis II for gas cooks.

But I do my steaks either reverse sear or sous vide, but can never get a “perfect” crust. Thinking of either getting a Weber kettle, or ditching the Traeger smoker and getting this (as long as it can get hot enough - 700-800f

I can get the Weber gasser hot enough for 1-2 steaks, but if I’m searing more than that the plate cools down too much

    • I've read that the max this will do is 500f with the lid open, one thing to be aware of

    • As a saftey it will cut off at 500f if you have the lid open, otherwise will go to 700f with the lid closed. The bbq should come with two manifold covers, one that directs heat straight up and the other that disperses it for longer cooks/smokes.

    • A Weber kettle will be much cheaper and will work nicely for searing if you prop the charcoal grate up on some bricks to bring the baskets right up to the grill grate. You’ll also need to get the charcoal well lit (use a chimney) and fill up the baskets as the depth of the coal bed will impact the heat being put out. Just note that you’ll sear a max of two steaks at a time on the Weber if using the aluminium baskets as they’re not that big. You’ll also have to manage flare ups and have some good heat proof gloves.

  • Howmuch is the gazeebo tho?
