Have the X1 Turbo, brilliant machine

I got this on the last deal, after 2 months I do recommend it. Only small issue is it has lost the saved map once or twice, but isn't a big issue as it hardly gets stuck with it's decent front object sensor

    • +4

With the maps.. if you pick it up and place it on the charge station it should restore your last saved map.. If you then go to start and have can't find, take it to another room and press locate button, if still doesn't locate more to another room and try (took mine twice), then start the clean from where it locates. Haven't lost a map using this work around.

      • Thanks man will keep this in mind

    • Just use clean area function rather than auto.

I would highly recommend NOT buying this. I bought one in the last year and regret it.

    Things I have encountered:

    • It refuses to clean beyond 20m distance from where it started
    • The auto empty station occasionally starts the motor randomly (had it happen in the middle of the night! WTF)
    • The mechanism for the auto empty is garbage and it often doesn't empty properly and I need to manually empty it
    • The SLAM algorithm implementation is garbage and it will often get confused about the map relative to previous maps (usually drifting rotation)
    • The mapping problems makes setting up a good routine & config difficult as you have to often delete its saved maps
    • It often has trouble returning back to its base
    • It does really stupid and efficient room ordering and vacuum patterns resulting in it taking longer than needed and being annoying
    • It is pretty crap at avoiding obstacles around dining chairs
    • The phone app UX is pretty terrible
    • Their support when trying to raise these problems are pretty useless

I haven't tried to use the mopping function though and pulled out the air freshening module gimmick (gross, who wants that crap sprayed around their house)

While I agree some of your issues are valid, I've found that this vacuum is a huge step up from the Panmi Viomi S9 which was a hugely popular deal on here. Comparing both vacuums, this one walks all over the Panmi and I'm happy with my purchase. It saves a lot of time not having to vacuum every day.

      • +3

That's good that it's working for you and nearly any robot vac is better than none.

I haven't read through the Choice magazine reviews to know what is currently better. I used to have some Neato robots which were smarter than this (but got damaged in a murder/suicide when I put them both on at the same time on the same level and they went near the stairs. Ooops).

        • My Neato is almost 8 years old. Once I put an aftermarket lithium battery in it it was perfect.

      • How is it so much better?

      • I've found that this vacuum is a huge step up from the Panmi Viomi S9

What makes this one stand out over the S9?

      • +1

Do you mean Viomi S9 Alpha? It's half the price though…

      • The Viomi s9 is/was half the price

    • +4

The auto empty station occasionally starts the motor randomly (had it happen in the middle of the night! WTF)

That shouldn't be happening. Would chase up a replacement based on that alone, as it would be infuriating happening late at night and no doubt wake up the house (as the auto-empty process is pretty loud). For comparison, the only time I hear the auto empty station is right after the robot returns to base to empty its contents after finishing a vacuum/mop cycle, otherwise it's silent.

The mechanism for the auto empty is garbage and it often doesn't empty properly and I need to manually empty it

My unit does a decent job, but yes I have to clean the robot out every second go as well, as bits of dust/fluff get caught in all places.

The mapping problems makes setting up a good routine & config difficult as you have to often delete its saved maps

I have found a more than subtle change to the scanned map (ie relocating a bit of furniture from one location to another) will cause the map to reset and the robot has to start all over with a blank canvas, which is annoying as the robot then has to do the first-time scan around the place again.

The phone app UX is pretty terrible

Could definitely be improved. Trying to set no-go zones can be frustrating, as instead of being able to click one corner of the no-go zone you've set up, the app will often instead move the no-go zone or click onto another you've set close by on the map. Refinement would be a welcome addition.

I haven't tried to use the mopping function though

It's not bad, definitely not a full-time replacement for mopping but good enough to fill in between mopping sessions. On our floorboards, the white pad always ends up dirty after the robot does the mopping, hence have found it pretty effective compared to what I expected. The mop module moves forwards and backwards, instead of being simply dragged around.

      Some positive points I've found:

-This unit does a great job on floorboards, have rarely had to vacuum manually since getting the unit.
-Had the unit over a year, haven't had to replace anything hardware-wise as of yet (the air-freshener capsule being the lone exception because it ran out).
-Replacement bags/pads for the mop from Aliexpress fit and work without issue, saving you some coin if you choose to go that route.

Don't regret my purchase at all, but as AnotherHuman has pointed out, this unit does have some wrinkles.

I had emailed their support and got some hand wavy bullshit answer about possible electrical interference. I was too busy to chase it up and just switch it off at the power point.

That's good to know re the floor boards mopping. I should give it a go.

        • I had emailed their support and got some hand wavy bullshit answer about possible electrical interference.

Sheesh, that's a terrible response on their part.

Sorry to hear your experience hasn't been good.

I have the T8 with auto empty, and I have similar complaints. And after a couple of years the battery is already severely underperforming. Meanwhile the original Xiaomi is still running strong 6-7 years later.

    • Mine is fine, no issues with the auto empty and i have a log fire which makes a huge mess along with a cockatoo who dumps seed and food everywhere like a savage.

It handles obstacles excellent, never gets stuck, cleans more than 20m from the base. It runs on a daily schedule cleaning various room combos based on how much they are used. And just one room i clean on demand by asking Alexa, so i rarely ever need the app.

But sometimes they just dont work well for someones situation, for me the Roborock was an epic fail and one of the most frustrating things i've ever bought.

      • I had measured the distance with a laser distance measure and checked with support and they confirmed that it had a ~20m limit hard coded in.

Unless that's been fixed in a recent firmware update, though I've never had a firmware update available since I bought it…

        • Strange, i just shot a laser measure from the dock down the hall which is 23 meters, then there's bedrooms beyond that. I dont know why they would even program such a limit if the wifi is good.

Sure they didn't mean a lidar distance limit? So if a wall is greater than 20 meters away, the lidar cant see it until it moves closer? That would make more sense, like my laser measurers i have a cheap 20m Aliexpress one, a 30m Ryobi and a 50m Bosch.

But i agree, they do need to improve the app the hardware is excellent and the weak link is the app and they dont do enough updates.

Agreed, I returned mine recently before the 12 month warranty was up (though mine was the N8+ but I assume the software is the same?). Spent more time sorting out (or trying to sort out) al it's issues than I would have spent vacuuming myself.

It seemed to work OK for the first 7-8 months but then something went wrong. The hardware itself was fine and did a good job cleaning up. The bot started running over the charging dock like it wasn't even there, even though the dock was in the right place on the map. Yes, I keep the unit and dock clean. I contacted support who suggested I do a factory reset on the bot, which I did. As well as a FW update first. I then attempted to remap the house, which kind of worked but didn't label the individual rooms as it had previously, and only cleaned half the house and then decided that 'cleaning is complete' (we have a small house). I then deleted that map and waited a day but when it remapped the house again, it only did half the house, again. It was constantly losing its location even though the wifi is strong throughout the house forcing it to start yet another remap. And then the day before I sent it back it was going up and down the same 3 ft of carpet in a straight line for about 15 minutes until I gave it a bit of a nudge and it got going again. Then when I got home it was sitting in the middle of the room with a flat battery because it couldn't find the dock yet again. That was enough for me.

    • I have encounter some of these but nothing too frustrating. Typical tech with bugs but it still does what I need it to do 90% of the time.

    • I had a very similar problem with another Ecovacs. Worked great for about 8 months and then it seemed that every run it would have a problem. Kept losing maps, kept having to remap the house, forgets where the base is, the app loses the robot, mopping was rubbish.
Their support is horrible. Their "try everything under the sun" email support before they will help you is a joke. Personally I wouldn't buy another one from this company just based on how crap their support is.

Highly recommended if you can accept it’s still relatively early adoption.

Mine is amazing. The only issue is it doesn’t always empty properly as mentioned above.

    • +3

My solution was to put tape over one hole, so it only sucks from one hole not two, and then setting smaller cleaning cycles (instead of doing the whole house in one go, I separated my house into 3 stages where it dumps after every stage. This means a smaller load and less likely to get blocked)

      • Yes smaller runs is the right approach. If you get too much hairy dust in the onboard storage it seems to clog and prevent the auto empty.

I do find the unit can have issues with navigating to a room that isn't adjacent to the room it is currently in.

  • Anyone have a recommendation for a cheap robo vac? Just wanting one to pick up stray dog hairs between vacuuming. Wont invest in an expensive one till we know the pups won't attack it.

    • +1

Dreame z10 pro. Been using it for about 2 months, very solid

      • Link?

      • thanks but i was thinking more around the $100-$200 mark lol

        • I'm keeping my eyes open for a dreame f9, they're about $250 when on sale and seem to be decent.

    • Eufy 35c good dumb vac , battery could be better if you have a big house and using the most aggressive clean setting ,
but that's all of them and has a decent onboard storage size .
It will need cleaning filters when you empty everytime , don't know how the auto ones manage this.
App settings up was too hard but it comes with a remote.

When its half price it's definitely worth it.

  • Any recommendations for the best robotic vacuum cleaner (vac+mop) for around $1500-$2000?

    • +2

I have the Roborock s7 and I love it. It's around the 1k mark but with the dock (which I don't have) it'll be around that mark.

      • +2

I got the S7+ (includes the dock) for somewhere around $1300 IIRC.

        Would recommend

        • Thanks mate

The roborock with the auto empty water/dust station is the best but its $2K+

  • +4

Bought the top of the line X1 Omni in the Ecovacs range - echo what others are saying above with auto empty not emptying everything out. Worse with the X1 Omni is that is has water too, so what was left in the robot was wet gunk. Ended up returning and bought another brand instead, if the top of the line model has issues can't imagine cheaper ones would be any better but could be wrong.

App is alright, map is sometimes glitchy but after re-doing the map a few times it got pretty good with rooms/no go zones/etc.

    • +3

Can second this. Luckily I was able to return via Amazon! Stick to Roborock.

  • +1

If you have pets its not a good option, go for a cheaper option.
Auto empty has never worked for me in the 1.5yrs i have had it, just sits in the machine have to manually empty everytime. Pet hair also gets caught in the blades so you have to constantly cut those out too

  • +1

If you can get a cheaper version without the auto empty station, do yourself a favour and get that instead. It's a large footprint for an object that does absolutely nothing. Unless you're cleaning a 1bedroom studio, any more than a few molecules of dust and it simply won't empty what's in the dustbin. How it got past any QA testing as something to release to the public is beyond me. It does vacuum quite well though. And the app is…ok.

    • I have a big house, larger than most and i have no issues with the auto empty station. I have a log fire which creates a huge mess, and a cockatoo who's a gold medalist in the seed, nuts and vegetable tossing olympics and the Deebot works just fine.

      • The second there is any hair in the dustbin, game over. The openings to suck the content out are simply too small to defy physics. I assume anyone who has it working live in a house of bald men and no animals.

        • The openings are plenty big enough, what are you trying to suck up golf balls? If they were any larger the pressure would reduce and it would have less suction, not more.

I'll tell the wife shes a bald man, and tell the cockatoo it's not an animal.

  • Like many have noted here, the vacuum its elf is pretty good but the auto empty station is bad because of the failed two hole design.
