If using exetel mobile, which is pretty good value..
you can also get further discounts with their 'slash my bill' promotion. We have two mobiles with exetel and receive a $7.50 p/mth discount on top of these NBN prices as well.

I'm on exetel atm, no complaints

    • +37

      no complaints

when did they stop accepting complaints?

      maybe try the ombudsman?

  • Never thought I'd upvote an Exetel deal but this is pretty good.

    • -6

Not as good as the More Telecom deal that goes for 12 months.

      • +3

More Telecom deal is restricted to Comm Bank customers only.

          • +3

            @jv: "This deal is better"

"But it's only for specific customers"

            "Right, but it's better"

            Classic JV.

              @Karl Pilkington:

"But it's only for specific customers"

Not really… Pretty much anyone can get a CBA debit card for free.

              @Karl Pilkington:

              "Right, but it's better"

Definitely, because it is cheaper and for 6 months extra.

      • +1

Thanks JV, got an email from Belong this morn, telling me their reducing my plan to 25/5, & charging an extra $5pm. I've got an old CBA account with card.
        Exy "50/20" - 6mths @ $53.95 + 6mths @ $69.95 = $743.40 (I get a better mobile deal with boost, Telsta coverage)
        More "50/20" - 12mths @ $53.90 = $646.80
        Saving $96.60 ($8.05pm)
No contract, worth a shot ;-)

      • Yes but checkout the More thread on Whirlpool. Lots of poor peak hour performance complaints.

Wish they include 4G backup connection ….

    • I’m using their supplied modem which accepts a sim and an existing optus data plan (from the galaxy tab deal a while back). From memory there’s a post here , or maybe on their website about diy 4G backup.

I haven’t actually tested it , but In theory it works 😀

    • Realistically how often do you need the backup?

      • If you work from home it’s good to have backup. We had a NBN network outage of 1 month recently and 4G backup really came in handy - especially with 3 kids all using streaming services and roblox etc
Plus since the 4G backup works at the same time as NBN and it’s unlimited we take it on holidays 😉

      • -1

        With exetel, probably every fortnight.

        • Certainly not my experience over the last 19 years with them. Very reliable and if you raise an issue they get on and resolve it. Biggest issue we had was NBN FTTC modems getting hit with lightening strikes but that’s fixed now we’ve moved to FTTP - no disconnections since then

  • They do credit check, not sure if they stopped after Superloop’s acquisition.

    • +7

They didn't stop doing it. They're stopping me from becoming a customer due to this BS policy.
I don't want an enquiry on my credit file for a service I am paying in advance for.

      • +1

Wasn't there a rep here saying they stopped doing these?

        • If there was, and you can find it then I'd be ever so grateful.

I'd love to jump across to Exetel, but with this weird approach they have towards people they want to on board as new customers, I've stayed clear.

I chatted with Exetel sales staff about 2 months ago and they confirmed that they would credit check me for what is essentially a prepaid service. When I politely asked why, they didn't have an answer.

So no answer currently = no new customer

          • @bonezAU: Why does a credit check matter, are you applying for a home loan?

            • +4

@BuyOrNot: The less unnecessary credit checks on my file, the better. I can get the exact same service for the exact same price from the exact same company (Superloop) without a credit check, so why would I want an addition enquiry on my file when it adds no value?

I recently did just refinance my home loan and it's bad enough that the lender did a credit check the date my application was submitted, and then another second credit check a month later when they assessed it.

It's unnecessary and unreasonable IMO for a company to credit check you when you're paying in advance for a service. It's not like I can rack up a $1000 bill by downloading too much, it's a fixed price internet connection that I pay for from a linked debit/credit card. If I don't pay, they can cut off my service.

Really don't know why you'd go for something like this when Felix is 20mbps and 20 bucks less. Been using it as a home internet hotspotter for well over a year now with no issues. Best of all, can take it with me out of the house or bring to other end of the house where home internet would never reach.

    • +6

Hey Duke, agree Felix would be great for 1-2 people, but for families of 3+ people, I think 20mbps would be a struggle?

      • +1

        It would.

        • +5

I did not neg Nuke's comment by the way, and sad that some people feel Nuke's valuable suggestion deserves a neg. Really hate what OzBargain has become lately……

          • @billy_bob: He got negged (not by me) because of the way he said it.

If he presented it just as a cheaper alternate, there would have been no negs. Felix isn't the same as a decent NBN connection. Paying the extra for NBN is a no brainer for me, but I can see how Felix or another mobile broadband plan would make more sense for a lot of people.

Either way Ozbargain "karma" has no real value.

            • +3

@Aureus: Aureus, I can see your point, but we are not all trained in the "art of spin". Duke shared his/her experience in their own way, and I for one appreciate their perspective without feeling the need to tear them down. I think it is fairly obvious that using mobile 4G as your main form of home internet is not going to suit everyone, but even if it helps only 1 or 2 people on this forum by highlighting this as an option to save a few dollars, then Duke's comment was worthwhile.

            • +2

@Aureus: That's fair. I'll be real, I typed it on my phone and I hate typing on phones, on my lunch break no less.

Anyway, you're all right. I put the asterisks there so you don't think I mean you are alright, when I mean you're all (plural) right.

              Anywhore,

That's absolutely fair with more than a couple people using it. Me and the missus have our home hotspot'd off Felix on my phone and we're fine. The only time it sucks is when you're downloading something big and have to sit for a while but even then, most NBNs like this aren't a tonne better, despite charging a good deal more.

In slightly more depth, the signal area coverage is pretty sweet. We're in regional Vic now and it runs fine, and covers a pretty large section of the house. I've had legitimately up to 30 odd devices on it at once with no real slow down, just doing background stuff to be fair, but the only real time I get slowdown is on the PS5, the WiFi on that thing is a goddamn hog and a half and worse still it downloads slow as shit on there compared to the Xbox or other stuff, not the point.

Point actually is, for 35 bucks, for unlimited internet at PERFECTLY usable speeds (4K streaming is no issue whatsoever), that you would never even know it was speed cap'd until you're doing solid downloads, can't go wrong. Felix is a perfectly good deal and one I can't recommend enough, with over a year with them now. If anyone does have any questions or concerns, not to hijack the deal and everything, but like, hit me up, can't rave enough about them. #NotSponsored

            • @Aureus: It would tank for Gaming!

But definitely decent for a renter etc

    • That's good. Set up a Telstra Modem and chuck it in there (you can root it and put the Vodafone details in there)…

    • +1

I've been using Felix in an AC1200 LTE router for the last year, since moving the coverage wasn't as good and had to setup NBN.

Will be saving money on churn deals for now. If I run out of cheap NBN options, I will probably setup a new Felix sim for the $17.50 pm over 3 months deal with a fresh account.

My Tenda 4G09 never got flagged in over a year, using up to 700GB/m.

      • Is the Tenda one compatible with any carriers SIM or works better for vodafone network?

        • Works better for Vodafone, with Telstra it required settings adjustments.

    • I want to have flex as a backup. Do you they have any promotions

      • Do you they have any promotions

        Ok

  • Dumb question but what's the process of changing nbn providers? I know they had all that churn crap back in adsl days, now I have no idea.

    • More or less the same. Just make sure you time cancellations and activations well so you don't pay for 2 providers on the overlap month.

Generally the 2nd service just goes on to the next available NTD on your modem if there's an existing one on there.

      • Generally the 2nd service just goes on to the next available NTD on your modem

What does that mean, do I need to change the ethernet cable to a different slot on my FTTP NTD?

        • yes that's what i did - i could use 2 different ISPs interchangeably on the overlap month.

          • @plentifoo: Interesting thanks, I recently upgraded to FTTP never really looked inside the NTD.

    • Dumb question but what's the process of changing nbn providers?

      Apply with your new provider

    • +7

I just transferred from TPG to another provider and got stung by TPGs 30 days notice period.

In saying that, they charged me the fee and disconnected me immediately so I'm paying the fee for nothing. Nasty TPG be aware!

      • +3

Thanks for the heads up, I'm planning to do the same after 15 years with TPG
TPG is going downhill fast, they haven't committed to the FTTP upgrade process and don't provide straight answers to phone calls and postings on their community pages.

        • Funnily enough, TPG did the same (require notice) over 15 years ago.

      • +2

        That's bad.
I'm on TPG as well and churning to Leapfrog deal. Submitted notice of termination on their portal, no confirmation email sent at all. Finally someone from their retention team called but I didn't pick up.
I got charged pro-rata fee that night and received termination confirmation email. So far my internet is still on, finger crossed.

TPG could be better in handling this, but it is what it is… Glad I finally pull the trigger after being with TPG for 10 years or so

      • +3

In saying that, they charged me the fee and disconnected me immediately so I'm paying the fee for nothing. Nasty TPG be aware!

When I was with another provider that required notice, I gave them the 30 days notice and told them the date I wanted my service to stop.
I arranged for my new service provider to activate 3 days earlier, so I 'lost' minimal money.

      • +3

I was previously with Exetel and they did the same to me.

        • was gonna say the same thing. Exetel sales team don't even know their own products either.

        • yep Exetel charged me also for leaving.

      • Happened to me as well. I still feel bad losing $60.

    • Really depends on nbn type.

Fttp and I believe FW doesn't do churns. Fttp will activate on the next line.

So at least for that tech type, you will need to cancel with your previous provider.

  • +8

Wish providers would do at least 50mbps upload with their 100mbps download offers.

    • +8

I wish NBNCo didn't introduce wholesale plans with low upload speeds. I've heard it argued this is to crackdown on P2P which works best with faster uploads.

The best NBNCo have offered is 100Mbps/40Mbps in the retail space. This 5:2 ratio used to be standard across all retail offerings.
Now it makes more sense (and cheaper) to be on a 100/40Mbps than a 250/25Mbps (10:1 ratio) if you are working/studying from home. The jump to 250/100Mbps is almost double the price.

    • -6

at least 50mbps upload with their 100mbps download

      why?

If you really need it, just join their business plans.

  • +1

is a tpg archer VR1600v modem compatible with exetel ?

    • They use PPPoE

I’m not familiar with all of this stuff, but I think if your router/modem supports that, then you should be okay

    • +1

I just set up Exetel FTTN last night using that modem from tpg.

VoIP needs some additional steps but the internet part was fairly straight forward

      • thats good i dont use a land line anymore so that'll save me $130 for their modem. do you know if you can set your connection date? as TPG requires 30 days notice.

        • You definitely can, when signing up.

I just did that 2 days ago, my TPG plan ends in 1 more day, and I'm a bit nervous if I've cut the line too short.

        • +1

          Yeah definitely can.

The number porting was the longest step. Once that was done, they hit start on the internet connection at 4pm and it was online by 10pm.

Fwiw, there is a way to hack the VR1600v to enable voip settings (hidden in TPG firmware).

I mainly only kept the home line for that 1 call a quarter where someone has missed the memo that everyone in the household has a mobile phone.

I gave TPG 14 days notice and plan on arguing for a refund of the 30 days (including credit card surcharge, TIO complaints, etc) - the $5/mth increase they emailed about seems to trigger another out in the T&Cs, and I was told by a TPG rep over the phone I didn’t need to give 30 days (even after I quoted the T&Cs to him) when I called and asked about whether they could waive the $5/mth increase.

    • I can confirm the VR1600v works on spintel as I moved from TPG so I think it would work fine on exetel.

  • can you specify connection date during sign up?

  • Is anyone using Telstra smart router with Exetel ? Planning to move to exetel after my ABB 6 month promotion ends next month.

    • +1

I would like to know too. I have a brand new Telstra smart gen2 modem sitting here.

    • +1

Telstra SM is compatible with Exetel.

      • Awesome. Will move over next month.

    • +1

Yes I am using my "free" Telstra Smart modem with Exetel, no probs at all.

      • How is it free?

        • +1

Got through the $1 per month for 2 months special telstra had. They didnt ask for it back.

          • @nepalesesquirrel: Ah sweet. I completed 2 months too with them and disconnected straight away. Was wondering if they are going to ask for it, they haven’t so far. Although the 4g sim stopped working too, sadly. Final bill also had no dues on it.

            • +1

@aoujay51: Black Telstra Gen 3 is extremely buggy. I use the Gen 2. I’ve used it with Exetel. I wouldn’t use the VoIP with exetel though. I would use Crazytel. That way it makes it simple if you want to change IS providers and chase deals.

      • How did you get it to work?

Did you change any settings other than adding the Exetel PPPoE username and password provided.

        • +1

Tbh i cant remember, but I dont know much about modem settings so Im sure I would have only changed the standard username and password. Working well for me.

      • Is that the gen 3 black modem?

        • +1

Yes, i got it free with the telstra deal a while back, it was supposed to be returned but they never asked for it.

    • I couldn't get the Telstra one to work properly with Exetel (a lot of buffering, sites/apps not loading and connection dropping out etc).

So instead hooked up the NBN box directly to the Tenda Nova Mesh WiFi unit and added the Exetel PPPoE username and password provided and it has worked fine since

  • I'm on Exetel 500GB 50/20 for $55/month (legacy). Worth budging for any of these deals? or nah

    • +1

If you don't go over 500g of data why pay more to be on this deal? The above prices are only for 6 months.

  • In my 3rd or 4th month with Exetel now. No issues at my end.

Looking forward to what nbn deals will be available in coulld months time.

    • I am only in my first month with Exetel but I keep getting these annoying emails and sms texts about malware and virus threats. Anybody else getting these? I've never had that from any previous ISP.

      • It’s their HomeSecure dns filtering/protection. You can turn off notifications under your account settings. Also remember to cancel the protection after 2 months(?) unless you want to pay extra for it.

        • +1

Thx for that, I can't recall signing up for this HomeSecure dns filtering/protection, but then again I did not read the the T&C's in full .

      • Login to your account and turn off the security

        • Yep, did that, thanks, hopefully no more spam.

  • +11

    30-day cancellation notice period.

It's a deal breaker for some

    • +1

"any pro-rata charges for 30-day cancellation notice period."
I have no idea what this means.

      • Basically if you give them notice X days late, you end up having to pay the equivalent per-day cost, e.g. if you give notice 20 days before cancelling, you'll pay for 10 days you don't end up using (i.e. wasted).

  • These guys any good? Reviews were pretty negative so I ended up signing up to Aussie broadband. There's a first month free code with Aussie.

    • just signed up with them a few weeks ago and it'll went very smoothly. no drop outs so far. i'm on the 50/20

    • I found them terrible. They logged a fault to NBN who found no fault. With their 30 day cancellation period I paid for 2 concurrent services as Exetel was unusable.

    • +1

I rate them as average. Been with them on NBN now for over a year. People in the house still need the landline, so content to stay.

Uptime is quite good, no major problems with disconnections, but noticed on a few occassions, slowdown in speeds (eg. from 25MB down to about 5MB).

No fun when streaming the footy.

  • Any discounts on the 250/100Mbps plans?

  • how do they compare with ABB?

  • +5

I'd turn off Home Secure, mine was slowing down my entire network
