I've been keeping an eye on these SSDs for a few weeks and they've finally dropped down in price to perhaps the cheapest price yet for a 1TB SATA SSD. Straight off the bat the obvious downside to this is that it'll have no DRAM cache, so it's more suitable for game storage or as a portable SSD an external enclosure instead of an OS drive. As with all storage, backups are always important.

I've been using a 512GB XrayDisk SSD for nearly 2 years now as a storage drive and the typical seq. read/write speeds I get is 550/480 MB/s.

  • Better than fatty dove SSD ?

    • +6

I have like a wall of AliExpress SSDs with their wacky designs and fattydove is sadly not one I have. They're a far less established brand than XrayDisk and I believe their SSDs are slower.

They win in terms of creativity with this killer logo

My only concern for XrayDisk is …. did they run the Xray before or after you own the disk ? XD

  • I would be worried there is a modified 16GB USB thumb drive inside

    • +1

Nah those would be fake WD external drives or generic "14TB" drives. These are easy to open and legit inside. I've shucked all my AliExpress drives and they've all been legit. Even the Kodak ones.

  • @clear
and any recommendation of cheap but okay case for this (from aliexpress is fine)? to be use as external disk

    • The clear Orico cases are good 👌

Nice price, but you can get an actual known brand drive for just $15 more - https://www.ple.com.au/Products/651163/Silicon-Power-A55-1TB… - without the 8 week delivery…

    • XrayDisk is no different to Silicon Power. They're both budget tier brands, both using TLC and both have no DRAM cache. The difference is the logo. Plus 8 week delivery is bull. As everyone else is saying in other deals the typical delivery is 1-2 weeks these days.

      • The difference is the logo.

No, the difference is that one has a warranty.
Good luck getting a speedy replacement for the XrayDisk at no cost, if it dies down the track…

typical delivery is 1-2 weeks these days.

        Sometimes.
I order regularly from AliExpress, I'm currently waiting for this order as we speak :

If you think these things are not worth the $15 saving, then great 👍

        • different shop different delivery time. i dont know how but some official shop even just $5 cable they delivers in 2 weeks!

and i just got full refund from aliexpress claiming non arrival of $8 item. so yeah its not that bad
but okay for $15 more probably get local except i have to pay $14 shipping from ple :(

      • There is a bit of a difference.

Silicon Power have a spec sheet, and specify the TBW. XrayDisk have nothing.

We have no idea what NAND chips XrayDisk are using, and the quality of the NAND. There are so many grades of NAND. The likes of Micron, Samsung, SK are going to keep the best binning for themselves. The quality could range from lower speed but full spec, relaxed, mixed binning, to untested.

For all we know XrayDisk could accept any binning’s. They easily work with the grade NAND they can get their hands on and conjure up a 'working' product. They could accept a greater number of bad blocks and lets the controller just reallocate them. The number of free blocks left could be lower, but do they really care.

I had a quick look at their site, on some SSD's they mention a list of controllers, so you could order that SSD and get any of those listed controllers. This is probably based on what they can get within their price bracket, and what NAND they are looking to pair it with. But the big players aren't without sin…I'm looking at you Samsung, cough, 970 Evo Plus, cough

If the whole point was the get the cheapest SSD that money could buy with no regard to the reliability of the unit, then this might be an option. But in my opinion, I think the smarter money would be spend a little more for a quality unit. The SP is $15 more, but TBH, if you wanted a cheap 1TB get yourself a Crucial for $25 more (BX500) than this XrayDisk on Amazon and get yourself top tier Micron. And since you’re on OzB I’m sure you can wait for that 1TB Amazon SSD to go cheap and tag it on to SB/CR.

        • You are really expert in semiconductors

      • i thought this was like Reused Flash tho ?
