When Did eBay Bring Back Listing Fees?

I went to sell a low value item (dvd set) on ebay and to my dismay realised that ebay wanted to charge me a $1 listing fee (plus fvf and pp fee, as per normal ).

Ebay has had free listings for as long as I can remember.

Their endless greed and contempt of sellers is appalling. This reminds me why I closed my ebay selling account in 2021.

Seems like nothing has changed… Back to fb marketplace and cex for me.

  • Hopefully you also know that they charge fees on sold items?

    • Obviously. .."(plus fvf and pp fee, as per normal )."

eBay stopped being a place to sell your old unneeded junk to become someone else’s bargain treasure well over a decade ago.

It has pivoted to maximise revenue from the high volume mass market crap that’s marked up bulk off Alibaba etc. It’s all just full of the same products from the same factory listed over and over under dozens of names.

They don’t care about your business selling a DVD set. It’s why they bought Gumtree for low profit things like that.

    • It’s all just full of the same products from the same factory listed over and over under dozens of names.

      ^^ This !!!

    • So true. The reality is so different now. Such a shame because I remember when ebay used to be fair, equitable and very useful for small buyers and sellers.

    • They bought Gumtree in order to cripple it. Just enough to stop it replacing eBay, but still block new entrants to the market.

FB Marketplace, cash on pickup only. This is the way.

Which is shit when you live in a small rural town with no customers for your low value item …..

      • Lie. Put your location at Chadstone etc, sell a bunch of things and tee up to sell all at a Macca's carpark near there, take the missus out for lunch and a movie etc.

        • You are very Melbourne-centric.

I live 300km from Melb. Why would I drive 600km to sell $50-$100 of stuff?

          • @oscargamer: Well that's because you have your profile location as 'Melbourne'….wouldn't have suggested that otherwise.

    • "Is this still available?"
      "Is this still available?"
      "Is this still available?"
      rage quit hahaha

      • You know it is because they have button to send that default message?
I just set an auto-responder for it in gmail :-)

Fees when you list your item
It's generally free to list items* in auction-style or fixed price format on eBay.com.au.

Pretty sure the listing part is free unless you're adding extra categories and other things to the listing.

The thing they'll get you on is the sale fees. For a small item it's not going to be too much of the cost but up to you how big a deal that is and whether you would have been able to find a seller on another platform.

For example, I sold an item for around $137 but they deducted $18 in final value fees from it.

    • The fee on cheap items is horrible as the fee% includes the postage
Ie $10 item with $10 postage approx $3 in fees

      • Yes, very sneaky. I remember when they brought in this fee change and sellers were spewing about it (rightly so!). It's a classic case of double dipping.

        • It did stop alot of the $0.99 listing with $487 postage sent from China

That only generated fvf on $0.99 and a $0.05 or $0.10 listing insertion fee.

  • Listing should be free, but expect about 13-15% final value fees.

  • Your choice , your not happy with their fees go sell on gumtree or Facebook marketplace.
Unfortunately eBay has become dearer to sell on but the level of protection is a bit better than other platforms

    • Protection for who? the buyers? As a seller, I've had INAD disputes and you're royally screwed with absolutely no recourse most of the time.

Fees on eBay are really high when you add all of them together - yet they supposedly broke up PayPal and eBay to be more transparent and avoid the double dipping. I almost never use it any more, but I did recently sell some high value stuff and accepted the fees, around 15% all up - just to get rid of them quickly.

  • Sounds like you chose an extra category. Listings are still free for list without an eBay store.

Use Gumtree instead and get cash. Avoid the headache of posting and someone opening a dispute to scam you.

I don't sell on eBay anymore due to fees and I notice I get more buyers on gumtree but more annoying and Time wasting messages unfortunately.
