Just got an email for a coupon for this, original price $229 but down to $99.

Seems to be a pretty well reviewed smart display.

Email said coupon codes are "unique" but hardly ever the case.

Mine ends in 0491, anyone else let me know if yours does too and I'll update. Coupon is not unique, thanks r0xz!

Barcode image for in-store. Thanks Clear!

As noted by Tuttle below, looks like web pages won't display on this device anymore. Something to take note of if you're thinking of purchasing

    • Yep exact same one, I'll update the deal. Thanks!

      • I have the same code.

  • +1

had a quick look at reviews of this, seems like a decent device. Apparently has the best speakers out of all the devices with google assistant

    • +2

Yeah, I have this one and Nest Hub v2. This one has a better sound.

      • +1

how good is the voice detetection? I had sony google smart speaker, really good sound but can't even understand who is speaking. Sometimes when my wife ask where is her phone my phone will ring because it can't even understand that part

        • +1

Voice detection is quite good, I have a couple of Google devices. This one detects it fast and give informations right away compared to the LG Google speaker that I have

    • & much more intelligent than Apple HomePods :)

  • +19

Going by the fact this is 4 years old and JBL no longer sell it I'm going to guess this is EOL.

Not sure how much there is to worry about with software updates, this is going to be music + recipes and not something you do your banking on, but I wouldn't expect any support from here on out.

But considering it compares to the much more expensive Nest Hub Max and not the standard Hub, I'm going to take a gamble on it.

    • +12

The concern with end of life (EOL) would be that Google changes the back-end protocol or authentication for a service and it simply stops working.

    • was about to order until your comment. thanks for the heads up

    • +7

Correct, this is EOL and has not received any updates in more than a year.

I have one and its a decent device but Android Things has been discontinued, and Google has moved its own displays to Fuchsia, while leaving Lenovo, JBL etc behind.

      • Thats -mostly- but not completely correct, 2/3 of the devices have been updated - the second gen nest havent been as yet.

        https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/08/googles-fuchsia-os-l…

Theres no real difference in operability, but I fully expect non-google devices to loose some functionality eventually, or at least not get new features.

Would be nice if the sound is better than my nest max tho.

        • App drawer and a few other things don't make it over for sure. The firmware version stays the same. Things like the date showing on the display or whatever the change was a few months ago, was server side so that made it over at least.

    • +3

Yeah, it's OS is "Android Things" which began shutting down early 2021 and was totally shuttered by Jan 2022.

    • +2

Even more intelligent than Apple, you can now have more functions.

  • +14

$99 is about the ceiling of what this thing is worth if you are going to be mass selling them. You shouldn't buy simply because of the savings off the rrp.

    • who actually uses this stuff anyway. Phone + a portable speaker is so much more versatile and easy to use.

      • +14

I have one in the kitchen. Useful for quick recipe checks and playing some background music without needing to carry my phone around.

      • +3

Its a smart clock/picture frame, that can also play music/music videos. If you buy if for those reasons in that order its great, if the other way around there are better options. The nest hub is one of the most used devices in my home tbh, mostly to settle arguments.

        • The Lenovo version has a 10 " screen vs this 8 " so as they say, it depends if you want sound or inches? (of display).
This has better sound and is not as pretty.

      • people who live with other people

        • people who like ice cream?

          • @gakko: sure and those that don't as well

            • @bargainshooter: Not sure why you'd want to live with someone who doesn't like ice cream, but go them I guess.

              • +1

@Munki: Because your i'scream will be safe ;)

      • I use mine for things my Bluetooth speakers can't generally do: Home automation control, set cooking timers while your hands are filthy, broadcast messages to other rooms or video call to other house members, help kids with homework, do quizzes, show me the weather and my upcoming tasks, add things to my shopping list. And more I've probably forgotten

      • I have one in my garage. It has pretty good sound. It's good for playing music on YouTube.

This EOL stuff does suck. Google, Sonos, Logitech yeah just brick the stuff so it can no longer be used….

      • I have like 8 hubs in the house (only one max though). It shows the doorbell cameras, you can broadcast from one side of the house to another (or in the shed), turn off the smart lights as well as put videos or music among other things.

    • +2

That's a very un-OzBargain thing to say, frankly

      • +1

That's right. Buy now, think later.

  • thanks op

  • Thanks op. The code is valid.

  • How does this compared to Google Next Hub in sound quality?

    • +3

Judging by the reviews on JB people say it has much better audio than the Nest Hub.

  • +1

Barcode if you want to use it instore.

  • +1

Great deal. Ive had 2 for several years, sound great, work well. Only problem I have had with is the bluetooth connectivity but otherwise excellent.

  • If you just want a speaker for your phone then the new Echo when on sale is about $70 and sounds pretty good. I only use it to connect my phone.

  • Can it be used as part of multiroom audio?

    • with other Google smart speakers yes

  • I've been using one for a few years and $100 is probably about what it's worth

    • why is that?, average sound, software, built?

      • +3

No real functionality outside of playing Spotify and being an alarm clock. And it doesn't have full Spotify either, it all has to be controlled verbally or casted from your phone. Kinda frustrating given it totally has the screen size to run the app.

It's basically a bluetooth speaker than can display what music it's playing.

  • For anyone who has this, can you link it to Google photos and use it as a digital photo frame like the nest hub does?

  • +1

can this be used as a general Bluetooth speaker just to play music? how is the sound?

    • yes and sound is subjectively very good

    • If you're never going to use the screen you can do much better from wired bluetooth speakers (or even wireless and get the benefit of that). Like this deal going on at the moment - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722944 or the ikea eneby speakers.

  • can this be linked to google doorbell for notifications?

    • Yes

      • even the live videos from doorbell onto this screen?

        • +1

Yes would presume so. But best buy a Nest Hub instead for ongoing support. Can regularly be bought for about $89

  • Bargain price but as others said it is probably EOL. Google devices are a safer bet for ongoing support

    • +2

      thanks, saved me $99.

      • +1

That’s how I found it - went looking to see if there was any ability to sideload apks etc, and worse than that, you can’t even browse the new any more lol

    • +1

will stick with google devices for better software experience, and they also go on sales very often

    • +1

thanks, was tossing this up until I read your message

    • +1

this is probably the reason they are clearing out the remaining stocks

    • +3

Interesting. Seems like JBL has deactivate web sites. That gives cause for concern.

      • +2

Lenovo has too, it's a Google restriction AFAIK.

        • +1

100% Google. They've discontinued the Android Things OS for these smart speakers so only their own devices will work with the browser and not 3rd party.

    • +1

Thanks Tuttle, saved me $99 as well. I was so close to pull the trigger too.

    • +4

Try this "Lenovo Smart Displays run Android Things (Google's defunct AOSP builds optimized for IoT products), and thanks to Sean, you can now unlock the bootloader and run regular Android apps on them!"

  • +1

    Y so fugly

  • Can I put my own apps into this speaker like .apk files for spotify premium or similar to play music?

  • -1

for a moment i thought it was JBHifi link view

    • Should've gone to specsavers

      • ha ha.. yeah

  • Pretty sure it doesn't play Netflix

  • As far as sound quality goes these JBL Speakers are far and away better than google home. Seems like a decent price for the offering.

  • In my experience the link view do sound considerably better than the regular Google nests but the Nest Hub Max is still noticeably better than the link view.

  • Take care - some are reporting Spotify isn't working now, either. https://www.reddit.com/r/googlehome/comments/wpyzsk/cant_cas…

  • +1

    Link seems to have gone.

    • Sold out apparently…

      • I saw heaps of stores with in-stock availability for both models.

  • +1

Nice deal, too slow this time for me!

    • Try instore/calling if you really want one.

  • One in Hobart JB even though website says none in stock if anyone's interested. Tempted but not given all the tales of "dropped services" for Android Things.

    • I was only just there. We probably walked past each other :P

      • OZB Inception…. :p

      • Was there about 1pm so bit of a temporal shift if we just passed each other. Noted when I went in it was discretely hidden behind a couple of Google boxes so another ozber must have passed us earlier in the day. 😂

  • +2

There's a reason to go with Google Nest Hub, software updates and future proof

  • +3

flogging a 4 years old item

  • Bit late to comment but this is a great speaker/timer/recipe book, it can play YouTube and the sound quality that it produces for its size would have been considered unbelievable 6/7 years ago. They were in the Telstra shop for $349. A few months ago,,But that’s obviously a silly price
