Western Digital 2TB P50 Portable Game SSD $200 in-Store Only @ Officeworks

640

Officeworks are doing a clearance on this item, I was able to buy the last one from Loganholme, QLD but take a look at https://nrby.in/officeworks/wdp50gd2tb to see if there is one near you. It appears that the link for the product on Officework's has been taken down so it would need to be bought in store.

This is a portable NVMe SSD containing a 2TB SN750 internally which by itself for $200 would be a decent deal but getting it in an external enclosure capable of USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) is a nice bonus. Brief searching online suggests that it can be shucked but I haven't attempted to do so.

Note that the 1TB version is also available for $150. Less of a bargain but still a good deal.

    4TB version costs $1242.

    • Got two of these, still a good price and I can't find any accurate stock of the 2TB now!

  • Thanks OP. Got the last one at Bayswater VIC.

  • Thx op got last one kotara

  • Thanks got last one dee why! Sticker was wrong at $420

  • Thank OP got the last one at Rutherford

    • +1

So u were the person that got it as I was on the phone lol

      • Probably, I called and put it on hold. I was there in 10 mins to pick up lol

  • Nothing at north ryde although stock said there was.

  • Thanks got the last one at mornington

  • Anyone managed to open it? Seems glued from inside.

    • +1

It's not glued, but there are 6 clips. After removing the 4 hex screws, the easiest way to open is by pushing on the cutout in metal (on the side of the USB-C connector) and putting a pry tool between the metal and the plastic, and levering it to create a gap. Then use a plastic card to go around the perimeter to release the rest of the clips.

Mind you, there's some pretty strong double-sided tape the drive and the PCB (under the drive, near the connector), which makes disconnecting the drive difficult (you need to pull the drive straight out of the connector, but since there's tape, it makes it much harder - just pull hard while slightly wiggling it side to side). Also, the entire package is wrapped in some kind of plastic film, which you'll need to remove, and inside the film there's are thermal pads inside as well.

Thanks OP got the last one from Epping( Vic) - I had to provide the product code( WDP50GD2TB) as they were not able to find it by name.

    • My experience; they can only find it via their mobile phone, if they search via the desktop then it wont show

      • Thanks @solsixus, @ahxching. I had to ask the staff to use their mobile device. The stock checker was accurate but turns out that even their system showed 2 there was only one left. so picked up the last one at O’Connor, WA.

  • can it be shucked and used interally nvme?

    • Yes, but it's not that easy to remove. The drive has no labels on it, but it reads as a "WD_BLACK SN750E".

    • Just shucked mine with no major hassles it's held in place with double sided adhesive (& screws) just heat it up a bit to soften the adhesives. It looks to be gen4 according to the WD software unless I'm reading it wrong

        It’s a SanDisk 20-82-0007011, same as sn750 so it’s Gen 3

        • You're right its definitely Gen3, my mistake

      • What does it report the drive as when you put it into a m.2 slot? I doubt WD would put 750SE in it. Honestly, 750 is better than 750SE unless you want a cheap drive to put into PS5.

        • WD_Black SN750E

          • @happychappy1: That's via the USB enclosure. If frodoballbaggins keeps saying it is PCIe gen 4, I am interested to know whether it is still reported as WD_Black SN750 E.

            • @netsurfer: It is, via the BIOS and Device Manager. The controller is the SanDisk 20-82-0007011. This is directly connected to a M.2 slot on the motherboard.

  • What mobo or laptop has 20gbps ports? Macbooks are 10 only

    • +1

Search for motherboards which support USB 3.2 gen 2x2. This particular standard is a bit weird. It basically modified Thunderbolt 20Gbps using a different encoding. Problem is, USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 do not need to support USB 3.2 gen 2x2. Some Z690, X570 boards have it.

We'll need to wait and see whether the latest ASMedia USB 4 chipset supports it because generally, there is currently only 1 chipset maker for USB 3.2 gen 2x2 - ASMedia.

  • As amit5280 pointed out, need to ask the store to check using mobile phone with the product code: WDP50GD2TB
Also, the list shown on the Web site is not actual real time stock.

    • Yeah, I tried a couple of the listed SA stores and both didn’t have any.

  • Morning apologies upfront, not knowing much about this. So if the kids are getting PS5, would this be compatible to use with that. Thank you

    • +1

      It's not ideal because:

      • As an external SSD, which can only be used to play PS4 / PS4 Pro version of the games on PS5, it is an overkill (PS5 support USB-C gen 2, but not gen 2x2).
      • Even if you remove the SSD inside, it is SN750 so that's only PCIe gen 3, not PCIe gen 4.

That said, if you intend to use it to transfer games to and from the internal SSD to this (and the other way around), it is a viable option. Also, at this price, you cannot really find a USB 3.2 gen 2 external SSD 2TB. Furthermore, majority of USB 3.2 gen 2 external SSDs tend to use inferior SSDs.

      • It's gen4 according to the WD Dashboard

        • Can you post a screenshot showing the drive is selected and also says gen 4? Mine says unknown. However, when I switched to the internal SN850, it says gen4.

Please make sure you select the correct drive. Generally, the software cannot tell the PCIe generation when it is in an enclosure. It doesn't make sense to put PCIe gen 4 SSD in this since USB 3.2 gen 2x2 is PCIe gen 3 x4 maximum.

If you have USB 3.2 gen 2x2, this is a good drive. However, you have to use the USB-C to USB-C cable included to achieve that. As soon as you use the USB-C to USB-A cable, you are looking at USB 3.2 gen 2 only. If you are getting good benchmark result, but the actual file transfer is not as fast, have a look at Device Manager and see if the drive is set to Quick Removal. For better performance, you need to change to the other mode and enable write cache. However, avoid simply pull out the cable (use proper eject).

You do get close to 2000MB/s in CrystalDiskMark's high queue depth sequential read/write, but single queue depth read/write is much lower (but that's the norm). WD's SSD dashboard works.

  • Thanks OP. Possibly got the last one in Liverpool NSW. Forgot to ask the cashier whether they had anymore.

  • Can these be used like any external SSD on a PC or Mac? What is the difference (why the name "Game SSD"), please?

    • +4

You can use this for PC, Mac, XBox Series S|X and PS5. Here are the limitations of each:

      • PC: [2000MBps max for gen 2x2, 1000MBps for gen 2] If you have USB 3.2 gen 2x2 port on your PC (must be gen 2x2), then you do get the benefit. If you don't have that, and only USB 3.2 gen 2, you get half the max speed.
      • Mac: [1000MBps max] Despite supporting Thunderbolt 3 or 4 or USB 4, they DO NOT need to be backward compatible to USB 3.2 gen 2x2.
      • PS5: [1000MBps max] Only USB 3.2 gen 2 support (half speed).
      • XBox Series S|X: [~500MBps max] Only USB 3.2 gen 1 support.

Note: using the correct cable and correct mode (not the fast removal mode) are mandatory to reach max speed.

"Game SSD" is because from WD Dashboard, there is a gaming mode, which disables the systems idle low power states (reduces the chance of power saving to boost the performance a little bit).

Mac, if you don't format the SSD to native Apple format (and keep it in exFAT or FAT32 format), you will get slightly slower max speed (and much slower random read/write high queue depth results).

Why people are getting it even if they don't have USB 3.2 gen 2x2? Given that it is SN750 or equivalent inside, a 2TB SN750 alone for $200 is a good deal (albeit 3 years warranty only).

  • Fairy Meadow definitely has zero - If a site says it has 1 left, it may actually be 0 :-(

    • Yeah, that list takes a few hours to refresh. After I bought 1, there should be only 1 remaining at the store I visited, but the site was showing 2 this morning for hours still.
Expecting it to be sold out very quickly, I was at the store before it opened.

The staff thought it was already sold out, but was quite helpful. Using the mobile phone and the product code did show a different result than the store computer like the other OZBers pointed out and the staff was then able to check and find them. Looking at the link now, it appears someone else picked up the remaining one from that store.

OW seems to be clearing the Seagate equivalent as well. However, the Seagate 2TB one is $270. 500GB version all sold out at my local OW.

  • Got the last one at mona vale.

  • 2 in Bondi junction both on hold, saves me the money I guess 🤪

    • Called in the morning and managed to confirm to be hold it only to arrive and be told its not in stock since yesterday. So annoyed , wasted the tme n trip

      • when i was there at around 1pm there was still 2 there. if you called to hold it in the morning you could've call to confirm it again before you made the trip.

        • in hindsight I could, but who knew that they will do such a shitty move. I've asked to hold stuff with OW all the time and had no such issues before.

Most likely they sold it to someone else and used an excuse that it was never in stock etc.

  • Thanks OP, was able to call ahead and confirm that they had one, kept at the front behind counter

Also worth asking them to email the invoice to you to keep track of that 5 year warranty

  • Great deal thanks!

  • Haha look at all them trying now to be flogged on ebay… And considering only two of them got sold on ebay in the last few months, good luck with that… Lol

    • Looks like 1 got sold. Wish people would leave this for people who actually have USB 3.2 gen 2x2. Anyway, it is risky to sell this on feeBay because most people don't have USB 3.2 gen 2x2.

  • Called around to several stores yesterday with no luck, they like to have them on the shelf but no actual stock behind the counter. Dreams were destroyed when I took the boxes to the counter ahaha oh well.

If anyone's shucking them I'm actually looking for a solid portable SSD case if anyone is willing to post?

I bought the last 2 at wentworthville nsw today. Saw 2 available on that link above. Surprised it was there for so long.

Looking take 1 out and put it in the laptop and use the second as a external hd. Anyone know why OW cleared these? A new model coming in?
