Thomas Dux Aged Cheddar 18 Months 250g $2.50 ($10/kg) @ Woolworths

910

Ingredients
Vintage Cheddar (Milk, Salt, Starter Culture, Microbial Rennet)

Product of the UK

Sold out in some stores but still available in many - I'd say about half the stores still have them (use the stock checker to see if there's some near you).

Make sure you grab the 18 month aged https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/86180 not the 24 month aged https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/81584 which is still full price

I haven't tried this particular cheddar but some of the other Thomas Dux cheeses which were very nice. I think it's a Woolies own brand. $10/kg is a good price for aged cheddar IMO

According to Choice testers, the tast score for 18 month is 85%, 24 month is 81%.

    Counter intuition, isn't it?

      *Intuitive

      • +2

        Intuition is a noun
Counter-intuition - intuition that is counter to common-sense expectation
        So correct.

Whereas Intuitive is an adjective (an attribute of a noun) - as in Counter-intuitive thinking…
(The noun 'thinking' is often implied in common usage.)

Therefore both would be correct, just not worthy of correction in the first place .

24 months is older and closer to expiry.. May be that's why.

Also stronger tasting. Coming from the UK and Europe we find most Aussie cheeses to be quite bland to be honest. Been here 20 years now and that opinion hasn't changed.

Our goto Cheddar Cheese now comes from NZ (Mainland), otherwise it's UK ones from Costco. Bega, Cracker Barrel etc are just used as cooking cheeses for us.

Don't get me wrong, there are some really nice Aussie cheeses out there and well worth eating.

        • There's plenty good cheeses made here

Try a milel parmesan block, just eat like a normal cheese (not grated onto pasta)

        • @freddofrog42 funny you mention that, I found the mainland ones awesome too. Didnt look at any taste tests.

Aldi has 36 months. Tastes very nice.

        • Yes, I love the Aldi 36 month one also.

    • +1

Yeah, I know what you mean. Iā€™d expect a 24 month aged cheese to be tastier/better than an 18 month aged cheese.

Can confirm that this 18 month cheese is absolutely delicious, though!

How does Ozbargain keep managing to be the perfect website?

  • use the stock checker

    Where do you access this?

    • +1

Thereā€™s a link on the product page that says ā€œcheck stock in our storesā€ then you can enter a suburb/postcode

I miss Fred Walker tasty cheese, it was superb, crumbly, ultra sharp and had those crystals in it.

    • +1

Me too! I haven't seen it for years. It tasted just like the cheese from the corner shop when I was growing up, we used to call it Mrs Erskine cheese, after the lady who ran the shop. She used to cut it off a big wheel and wrap it for you.

I'm currently enjoying Coles British Cheddar, made in UK, matured for 15 months. It's very similar to how I remember Fred Walker's and it's good for eating and melting for cheese on toast.

      • Thanks for the recommendation, I'll try it!

  • Its out of stock everywhere, so best close the post

    • Still in stock near me on the Gold Coast. Also most parts of QLD, NT and SA.

Edit: Also some stores in the Sydney region - Cronulla, Caringbah, Illawarra Rd Metro, Prestons, Miller, North Strathfield, Merrylands, Rose Hill.
They update the stock checker thing every 2 hrs so it can change. A lot of the Metro Stores are showing stock.

      • Thats weird… When I looked up it said all stores ? I had no store selected and no postcode in the box ? OK then, may be there is some … somewhere.

        • Yep you need to put a suburb in the box. I find sometimes the postcode doesn't work but writing the suburb name does. Also it was sold out yesterday in stores near me and it looks like they've restocked over night. Doesn't look like there's much around in Sydney and Melbourne, which makes sense as I think most OzBargainers are from these cities.

Still available at 2 stores near me. Down from 3 local stores when Deal posted.
Stores may restock - worth checking again.

  • For the price, hard to beat. Very good cheese.

Snowdonia Red Storm Leicester Cheese is quite a lot better imo, but much pricier.

    • +1

Yep, for the price at Woolworths you can only get regular house brand tasty at this price per kilo, and you have to buy a kilo. I imagine peopleā€™s toasties will get a significant upgrade with this. Will have to save this thread for the cheese recommendations.

South cape cheese edam 200g was on clearance for $3.40, not sure if any good or if available everywhere.

This Thomas dux stuff is magnificent, just had some more this morning and enjoyed it much more.

Managed to get the last block at my local last night, tried it this morning, delicious!
