Services Similar to Google VoIP Numbers for Burner Numbers

I've been using my real phone number for my online shopping such as eBay and I've been getting alot of spam calls. I think someone is farming mobile numbers from postal delivery labels as they usually print my number on there.

Anyone can recommend any services such as Google VOIP numbers that I can use in Australia, so that I can regularly change the phone number. I want it to be active, so that they can contact me in the case of an emergency, but I don't think I will keep the number for long term.

What if you change your number and someone tries to call the old number in the case of an emergency?

    • what do you mean? VOIP numbers are 2nd numbers, you don't need to get rid of your old number.

    from postal delivery labels

wouldnt it be more likely from the literally uncountable amount of data leaks that happened over the years?

    • true, i don't know where all the leaks are. but its a problem regardless.

Probably even more likely that they have a computer dial every possible combination of phone number in Australia and identify which are answered by a human so that they can be spammed later.

I pick up the phone but don't say anything at all. After a second or two, they hang up. I'm hopeful that my number is being marked/identified as "non-human".

        • I make fax noises.

  • Crazytel has cheap numbers. So does Skype.

      So does Skype.

Skype charge $54 per year for a number.

There are services, yes, but the problem there is you've actually described the exact use case that the spammers have (i.e. rolling through some large collection of ephemeral phone numbers to avoid filters), and so any anti-spam protections people have in place are going to block you out as well.

To be honest this seems like a legit, non-adultery purpose for having a second phone if the spam bothers you that much (a la that thread we had a couple of days back).

  • There's no need to waste time and money farming mobile numbers from anywhere. Your phone number is 100% guaranteed to be in between 0400000000 and 0499999999. Just run a number generator between those numbers, charge all the calls to stolen credit cards, and off you go.

    • True, but the random number will not be associated with your name, address, and your purchase history. It is easier to scam someone when you know these details.

The mass scam calls people experience nowadays typically aren't spear phished. They go by volume - call enough people and claim you're from Telstra and there is a problem with your internet, or "a purchase was made at Amazon for $586.54", or "This is the Westpac credit card department", and you will come across many people who use Telstra, Amazon, or Westpac.

It is easier to scam someone when you know these details.

You'll be surprised at how easy it is to scam some people without knowing those details.

  • It is cheaper to get a $5 365-day ALDI SIM and divert it to your normal number. You can simply get a new card (and number) when you start getting spam:
