UPF 50+ protection
5.8㎡ of shade (Large)
Folds down to 97cm (Medium) and 105cm (Large)
Sand pockets provide 16kgs to keep you on the beach
How does this compare to a large beach umbrella?

These are great. Easy to set up, easy to pack up.

    • +1

      Match perfectly with this dome

  • any reason to get an original one over the knockoffs?

    • These are well built, easy to set up, stay standing up in wind, and last.

Knockoffs, who knows what build quality they are and if they have identical design as far as how they are set up etc.

Unless the knockoff is going for kmart prices ($50), i'd suck it up, pay the extra and cry once.

  • UPF 50+ protection

    Not in the picture.

    • But it’s in the text

      • +2

If it doesn't block the sun, it's not offering protection.

Umbrellas have a tilt mechanism for this. When the sun is low, you tilt the umbrella and still get shade.

        • The shade isn’t always directly under it. But it’s always a big area. The sun doesn’t move so quickly you have to set up your chairs etc all over again.
They’re really good, probably the only beach shade I’ll ever use again after years of different set ups.

  • Always curious about the quality of these, especially when it gets a little windy

    • They won't fly off in the wind.

This is a bit of a shitty video I found, but gives you the idea.

Ours flew away in the wind and one of the arms got bent. Then I realised we hadn’t completely fill up the pockets with sand, only to two third.

The risk at a crowded beach, it is so big if it flys away it may hurt others around you until you catch it.

      • +4

Or you could just fill the pockets completely, as is intended?

  • +3

No need to worry about your umbrella flying down the beach

Yes this beauty will fly like a kite in the wind.

    • Nope… it's open, wind won't affect it much. Pockets should be filled with sand, keeping it grounded.

      • I'll let the people know that I saw this happen to just last Saturday on the gold coast that It was all in their imagination.

It's just a light duty gazebo. Sand bags are good for a light breeze. You're better off with screw in sand pegs and proper sandbags

        • They probably didn't fill the sand bags fully.

        • +1

I trust my personal experience with using this product in strong winds over your observation at a distance of seeing one flying through the air without any indication on whether or not they had used the product as it was intended.

  • 🎵 Cabana ooh na na

    • Now she's lost her mind
      At the copa (co) Copa

  • +5

used this product and honestly the shade cover isnt good at all being so high. As you can also see in the pic you always have to move your seats to get the shade.

    • +2

it's a balance between making it functional and shady…. eg do you want to stand/kneel underneath, or do you only want to be cramped?

      • +6

i disagree, those 2 words don't work for this product. Functional is not every body standing close together in one spot for the shade having a half tent which offers you more shade and to sit down works better in my opinion then having to stand under shade…Most people sit under them or lie-down rather then stand, which takes up more space.

        • Can't you get this though, and use a tarp to block out the shade as necessary?

      • Look at their website review photos. Those speak for themselves. Some are even outside the area below the umbrella trying to get some shade 😂

    • Yep, this is a fair comment and I have the same complaint. I avoided buying one of these and have tried pretty much every other offering and eventually picked one of these up during the last sale. They are a great product despite the shade complaint, plus we typically don't spend all day sitting under it so the trade off works in our situation.

    • It states that 1.85m (6ft1in) to roof peak, 1.60m (5ft3in) to roof edge. for both large and medium.
So most adults would need to duck their heads to get in, there's not many adults smaller than 5ft3in.
What height do you think it should be? Couldn't you bury each leg 15cm in the sand, it would only take a few seconds for each one?

      • You can only bury the middle stake, and only so much. The four corners are pockets for you to fill with sand, maybe a bit harder to bury.

These work great in Queensland where the sun is directly above you most of the day.

For the southern states you'll probably want a side wall.

    • 100% not very good cover. The sun moves and is not always right above the umbrella.

    • I agree, I wouldn't recommend these personally. Not sure I'd down vote it as a bad deal though. They are all the rage, but having used one last summer I was not a fan at all.

  • +2

Love the product images. Especially the Boss pointing out the spot where she wants the damn thing set up. Next image is the guy trying his best to get it set up.

    • boss wouldn't be carrying the thing though, it's usually the guy carrying it along with wagon and/or esky. speaking only from my personal experience :D

How does this compare to a large beach umbrella?
A large CoolCabana provides more than double the shade. A large beach umbrella is typically 2m in diameter, which provides 3.1m2 of shade, close to half of the 5.8m2 of shade from a large CoolCabana.

I love that 5.8 is more the double 3.1

    • +4

      Half of 5.8 is 2.9.

      3.1 is close to 2.9.

      "Close to half" is correct.

      • +1

Yes, but they also state: "A large CoolCabana provides more than double the shade."

    • +2

5.8 is more the double 3.1

Excellent reading comprehension, translating "close to" to mean "more the double"

      • +2

Yes, but they also state: "A large CoolCabana provides more than double the shade."
Are you sure you're not struggling with reading comprehension?

    • How does this compare to a large beach umbrella? A large CoolCabana provides more than double the shade.
      large beach umbrella: 3.1m2
      large CoolCabana 5.8m2
Yes, they do say close to half, but they also say more then double. So it's quite contradictory.

  • +2

For those who can't justify the price of the cool cabanas beach shelters. Look at the specs before you order any off brand ones. Most of them will not tell you the folded size. Some don't have poles that separate, fold or collapse. Might as well carry around a gazebo. The cool cabanas are very functional and sturdy.

  • Bought a second one to leave at the holiday house. They work so well for our family of 6 and we spend at least one day a week at the beach through summer. Surfing, snorkeling, fishing etc.

  • Grass kit is sold out. Do you need to use their specific grass kit or can you buy and use a cheapo one else where?

    • +1

I just use the sand spike that it comes with. The grass kit is just a shorter sand spike.

      • Cool, so just need to get grass pegs?

        • +1

From memory, it comes with pegs.

          • +1

@zealmax: mine did not when i bought it 2 years ago. maybe that has changed

            • @yoquierotaco: I got mine last year. I only tried it in the grass once and I may of just used pegs that I had.

  • Any comments on Large vs Medium for a family of 4? Been wanting one of these but wanted a medium. Wondering whether the large is much more bulky or whether to just go for it whilst on sale!

    • buy the large, it's not that much bulker (105cm vs 97cm) and it's well worth the extra shade (5.8m^2 vs 4m^2). As others have said, shade is not always directly under the cabana depending on the sun.

      • Yep, agree. The large is rated for 4 people but there is no way all of them can sit under it fully shaded. Large is good for 2 people in full shade. Take the large.

    • Absolutely go with the large.

The coverage area of the medium is significantly less than the large.

  • Cheers OP was literally looking at these over the weekend with summer slowly approaching

  • Can anyone comment on the quality of the beach mat and whether it is worth purchasing?

  • +2

These were $99 only 2 years ago

    • inflation :(

    • The large was 189 in 2019 according to previous deals.

  • +1

    Consideration:

The medium fits perfectly in beach carts, the large doesn't.

    • My first consideration would be how much shade I need, then secondly the ease of transport.

The medium in my opinion is too small for more than maybe 2 people.

  • Looks like Epstein's Island.

  • +1

This is only good if the sun is directly above the tent and stay in the same spot. Otherwise the occupants will need to keep moving around where the shade is. This should at least have three mesh walls to provide some sun protection for the occupants. If anyone fall asleep under one of these then prepare to get partial tan or burn…

    • Thanks for explaining how the sun works…
