Have We Reached The Point Where Apple Haters Are Worse than Apple Fanboys?

From looking at recent posts on Apple products, there is a group of users who seem to be desperate to bash Apple rather than providing helpful information.

From a few recent posts:

  • Apple silicon is an ASIC(Application-specific integrated circuit)
  • Attacking the Mac mini for not coming with a keyboard or screen
  • Saying macs are rip-offs or there are cheaper equivalent products and:
    • Unable to provide a alternative
    • Providing a budget laptop with a power hungry CPU, 45% NTSC screen dull screen, etc
  • Attacks on price

Apple fanboys used to get a bad rap on the internet for eating up Apple's marketing. One area where this is common is users who think RAM is magic on Apple silicon.

Edit: Thanks for all the responses, negs, and provision of data for me to work with. No real surprises but some interesting discussion.

In hindsight, this post isn’t worded the best and possibly warrants a second topic on what exactly is a bargain.

The users i’m talking about are a small subset of users:

  • Haters - spread negative misinformation/bashing product with no real basis
  • Fanbois - spread positive misinformation

My interest is purely in trends and one which I feel has reversed.

I’m also enjoying the drama on the Peak Design backpack thread. I think some of the users there have better articulated what I hoped to achieve. Maybe there is a wider topic here on what exactly is a bargain.

    No

  • Re OS updates and security patches - it can't be that expensive for a big company to do can it? There are loads of custom Android ROMs out there maintained by people in their spare time for free. The problem is I suppose that Android manufacturers release too many models.

I always take opinions of people who don't/never did own the product with a pinch of salt. Spec sheets, even reviews only give a small glimpse of the ownership experience, given how every user will actually use the product varies wildly too.

This definitely applies to Apple devices/ecosystem, I'm not in it but I respect it and don't deny anyone their experience or purchase decision.

Haters and fanboys on both sides of everything really, I just try to use my words to objectively give my take when asked or prompted without bringing emotion into it, and importantly, without ridiculous childish name calling, which sadly is far to common. (ie, crapple, shitsung etc)

We've now reached the point where people crying about Apple haters are worse than both Apple haters and Apple fanboys

Humanity has it so easy that we need to invent first world problems to keep us occupied.

The only group that somewhat irk me are those who regard Android users as inferior based on the colour of their text messages. It isn't really even about Android vs Apple for me - it's the status judgement, brand worship, and the fact that a bunch of sales are probably made by people who will never use their phone for more than Instagram and TikTok, and where the difference between a $500 or $2000 phone will never even be seen. It doesn't even mean much anymore, because the same would apply to top tier Android device users.

It's all silly anyway, we like to draw lines in the sand and stand on either side for arbitrary reasons. We're getting bored of religion, so we've moved on to consumer electronics.

  • +1

haha, I've been saying this for quite some time. I use an iPhone, MacBook Pro, and I'm in the IT Industry where there are plenty of Apple Haters.

My response is similar to you, I don't tell anyone to buy Apple products, and I don't tell people which milk and bread they should buy either … when they learn I have Apple products, the haters be haters, but no one cares which milk and bread I buy …

  • +1

Most Apple Fanboys have moved on to become Tesla Fanboys.

  • +1

    Don't think so.

I don't use apple but I can see how other people find them useful, obviously they suit certain needs that not everyone requires but that's fine.

The only issue I have with apple is when someone I know buys an apple product and then asks me for tech support, yeah nah dude I advised them not to buy apple but they still did. I didn't suggest they avoid apple because it's bad, but because I knew they would want support regardless and I don't use apple myself and I'm not learning another OS that I never use to give free tech support.

    • +1

I had an older relative buy an iMac.

I didn't approve of the purchase (i3/mech hdd) at the time but honestly, it has been a great. They now call Apple's support instead of me.

Spec wise and based on their use I think they would have been better off with a PC (or even a mac mini).

Apple fanboys will always be worse than the apple haters.
Fanboys encourage consumption from an objectively disgusting mega-corporation which should be avoided at all costs.
Yes, Apple might make nice hardware, but the ethical cost is too large.
Bad people/entities can do good things, and vise versa, but would the world be a better place if Apple was dismantled over night? Absolutely.
There is no counter-argument to be made, basic research shows how horrific Apple can be. They even have a Wiki page that summarizes many of the issues:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Apple_Inc.

    • So which manufacturer do you support/recommend?

  • I think you can make valid arguments for and against any premium/overpriced product.

This idea of misinformation campaigns by arch rival consumers seems to exist mostly in your mind.

    • seems to exist mostly in your mind.

There are examples provided of actual things Ozbargain users have said which are demonstrably false. TBC, I don't think there is an orchestrated campaign against any particular product.

There are examples provided of actual things Ozbargain users have said which are demonstrably false.

        Such as?

  • I thought Apple Haters had always been worse than Apple Fanboys. This is a bit like Linux/Unix vs Windows, Emacs vs vi editor… There can't be any conclusion.

    • I feel for the FOSS community and feel they had genuine arguments.

They also came to with some pretty hilarious stuff like this:
      http://www.linuxgenuineadvantage.org/

Also, technically speaking, MacOS is Unix.

  • I used to be really upset when people make fun of stuff/brand that I own. Then I grew up.

    • Good to hear. I hope the people making fun of stuff and posting misinformation can also grow up.

Who cares really?? Enjoy whatever works for you.

    P.s. Apple sucks!

    • +1

      Long Live iSheep :D

  • +3

Once you reach a point where you don't care about either it's pretty sweet.

    • +1

Took me about 10 years to get there. Wasted so much time on the hate lol.

The M1 was the first Apple product I've owned since the Macintosh Classic II and it's the best laptop I've ever owned.

I can't buy an iPhone because no competing browser engines (no Firefox with Ublock Origin, SponsorBlock, etc).

      • You can get adguard on iOS but it does funnel your web traffic.

  • +1

I have both ecosystems and enjoy both, but prefer Android.

When Android is lacking, Apple usually has me covered. Goes both ways.

  • No, I think everyone has their opinion and that’s fine. It’s all down to personal preference and I think there are fanatics and haters for every brand and they’re all as bad as each other.

Like whatever you like and get over it, not everyone is going to like exactly the same thing you like.

    • Having your opinion is fine. Spreading misinformation is not.

      • Someone’s “misinformation” might be based off their own experiences with the product. Just because it doesn’t line up with your experience, it doesn’t mean they’re wrong.

  • +1

Unfortunately people will spread misinformation whether intentional or not. They sometimes parrot what others say or jump on bandwagons without thinking. Take a look at twitter to see it in action. Sometimes an option is presented as a fact. Or when passed on, is rephrased in a way that differs in subtle ways. You can easily get stuck in an echo chamber where you end up hearing and repeating an opinion or thought
It happens with much more serious things than your choice in consumer electronics

One thing that I used to see mentioned online that I assumed to be correct was that Apple stuff is so much more user friendly than alternatives. Grabbed an iPad for my mum, turns out she hates iOS lol, and I'm bewildered by some of the UI/UX decisions. Maybe I'm just spoiled by having my Android phone set up just the way I like it and on the PC side of things, I'm used to the maddening bad design of many Windows things as well as the arcane nature of Linux but my mother isn't a power user by even the most generous definition of the term. So when it comes to Android vs. iOS, I don't think Apple's offering is so incredibly superior as I was lead to believe and it's more of a personal preference thing or what you're used to. I envy how much nicer scaling resolutions looks on Mac though. That sucks ass on Windows.

    • +1

Apple actually provides software support. Android is way too fragmented.

Apple's tablet division is leagues ahead of Android. Would love to see user selectable locations for apps though. Their success does cause issues - no touchscreen iMacs.

Was never a fan of apple products as I found them too expensive for what they are. About 8 years ago, the company that i work for has decided to go down the path of getting us all iphones as a company phones. No other phone brand was allowed to be used and I was not happy about that. I am now on my 3rd Iphone in 8 years and have never had any hardware and software issues. (it just works) We just replaced the phones as they were getting old but there was otherwise nothing wrong with them. Even the battery was ok after 3 years of use etc. I work in IT and deal with corporate phones as well and the company owns around 500 iphones and 500 Ipads and I don't recall anyone coming back to us with any issues in the last 5 years.

    • Aren't forgotten passwords a huge issue?

    • That's the point. Many of us usually just ignore Apple products because of the price. Once we come into contact with an Apple product, many of us become fans of the product. I had a colleague who owned an iPhone got his faulty battery replaced even after the warranty period. Your company probably has some positive experience with Apple Support too. I have my (first and only) iPhone for 3+ years now and still enjoy using it. But I still use my Android phone for testing and comparison purposes.

I work with a guy who loses his mind over Apple all the time. It’s such a trigger for him that I fear for his mental health.
He also has Samsung TV, Samsung Air conditioner, Samsung phone, Samsung microwave and fridge. I’m left wondering who the fan boy actually is 🤷‍♂️

    • +3

"Don't be a sheep", he'll say, just like everybody else…

    • +1

It's a problem with a lot of brands and accessories and politics (especially overseas). Too much consumerism is tied to their personalities.

  • +2

Everyone knows the real fight is MegaDrive vs SNES…

  • +2

It really feels that way. Apparently if you own an Apple product you’re a fanboy.

Every OS and brand to me has its place as long as you’re using it for the right reasons. Nowadays the android vs iOS argument being guaranteed cheaper is out the window since the s22 (from memory) where the tagline at launch was ‘most expensive phone’.

If you answer a recommendation request without asking what the user wants out of it, you’ve just shown bias in some form.

  • +1

    Pro's and Con's for both.

I've recently switched back iPhone from Android.

    Why?

Because Android Auto is a mess.

  • +2

Though I like the macs, I genuinely hate them for the IOS. The shit they push on the customers making them pay more money. Removing headphone jack. Removing earphones. Removing chargers. Giving stupid reasons like it is for the sake of environment.

    • +2

What's worse is when certain Android phone manufacturers lampoon Apple for those decisions, then turn around and do it themselves…

    • Giving stupid reasons like it is for the sake of environment.

It's really for more money. Keep the phone price the same but have all these extras.

The newest iphones come with a USB-C to lightning cable but the previous iphones all had USB-A adaptors. I'm not sure if they've ever released an iphone with a usb-c charger.

I consider myself a critic of both apple and samsung.

Apple do take the piss sometimes though make products that are amazing for 80% of people.

  • -1

Must be Android fanboys, they’re quite feral you know.

Not sure why brand fanboyism is so prevalent, you can love Google and Apple to death and bear children for them, but they will never care about you or pay your bills.

    Stupid

    Its called "life"

    No different to;
    East vs West
    2pac vs biggie
    Ford vs Holden
    Sydney vs Melbourne
    Playstation vs Xbox
    blondes vs brunettes
    Coke vs Pepsi

For the vast majority, its just light hearted banter and and a bit of fun with their hobby/interest. You find similar arguments in the car world, watches, sport and so on. The difference with smartphones is that everyone has one so the banter seems greater and more constant.

There are those that may take it a bit too far, but I find the ones that are constantly trying to judge others for their "fanboyism" have bigger problems

  • This is really highschool level 'xbox vs playstation' type of an argument, if not worse considering it's from grown adults. I personally use whatever fits my needs/work requirements and budget. I've moved several times between apple/windows/android, even used them simultaneously. I'm usually interested in pros/cons and genuine criticism but could care less about 'haters' or 'fanboys' and most sensible people are in the same boat. People who obsess over these brands like it's a fan club really have no lives and sound like they're missing braincells when whenever you read their drivel under most review videos on youtube. Luckily they stick out like a sore thumb and can be ignored.

  • Its just a gadget, dont take it personal, u will losse ur health, only people benefit from ur brand love is apple but not u

Apple Silicon is an ASIC though? So is an Intel Core i7 whatever, just because the Intel/AMD chip is socketed doesn't mean it's not an ASIC.
    People are dumb.

    • No. It's not. Neither are Intel/AMD chips.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application-specific_integrate…

All mentioned processors are general purpose. Even if you ignore the definition, the argument that Apple Silicon is an ASIC because it can only run MacOS, it is not true as -

      • Linux runs on Apple silicon
      • The bootloader isn't locked down
      • I appreciate your response, I didn't explain that I don't have a problem with Apple Silicon being called ASICs or general purpose processors, that's just semantics and actually unrelated to if the product is good or not. ASIC does not mean bad as a whole, it just means ASIC.

  • +1

In my observation, it is the Apple fanbois that create Apple haters.

  • +1

Smart consumers never stay loyal to any company. Why would we discuss changing electricity, phone plan, etc here in ozbargain to get perks but holding consistent cliche about Apple products? Since Apple had M1 chips, I switched to MacOS and iOS completely from a die hard Android fan. If there was a day that Android or Window had better experience, then I would happily switch back. Don't let a brand stick to your identity, either a fan or a hater

  • +1

Lol a “friend” has been bashing Apple to me for years, especially regarding their expense - it’s funny but he gets really upset about it whereas I really don’t care much. So I’ve never bothered to bring it up to him that ironically he has actually spent way more on his android phones than I on Apple iPhones as he keeps needing to replace them so much more often because of performance issues.
