@[Deactivated]: Just activated mine today, went to payment method and did both: turning off auto recharge as well as removing the card.
My understanding is that it depends on the sim / prepaid plan purchased. I just activated an older one purchased a few months ago, was able to turn off auto recharge, and remove payment method.
activating the last of my vouchers today and i'm able to remove my card details from my account.

I thought call to cancel is required for all plans now including the one for students

Just checked mine. When I go to "Payment Methods" I can only see "Update Card" button. There is no way to remove the card like before.
