    No, they're not underrated.

They have very low sales volume in Australia, so compared with the mainstream such as Mazda, Toyota, Hyunda/Kia, etc. you're likely to find it more challenging for parts availabilty, competent service and a small showing of a dealer network.

    • If you lived in a city with a lot of owners and repair shops that repair them all the time, would it be worth it then?

      • Not in my opinion. I wrote that comment as a Sydneysider.

  • Ex owner here - Stavic. My cars have included a Valiant, Torana, Diahatsu and an ex-taxi. Current car is 15 years old. I spent more time on the side of the road beside the Stavic than all the others combined. Never again.

      Love your taste

Thanks. It's equal parts taste, need and opportunity I think.

    They are highly rated !!

They're very underrated, much better value than Kia/Hyundai and very impressive interiors, very well insulated against NVH too. Great cars. Same goes for Peugeot/Citroen.

    Are SsangYong SUVs underrated?

    No.

  • They are now owned by Mahindra and Mahindra of India. I feel they are decent for the Asia market but perhaps not up for the competition here just yet.
Maybe if they were priced accordingly like MG they would have a greater impact.

  • Ugly AF. That's all I know.

Ultimately most of the criteria you are asking is just how popular a car is. The more popular a car is, the more mechanics are experienced in that particular model, the more spares are available, the more YouTube videos you can find if you're DIY-ing, the easier it is to sell because others are constantly looking for that model…etc.

  • The older ones, no. They were terrible, ugly shitheaps. Think more Daewoo than Hyundai. They suffered from poor sales, piss poor resale and we’re not known for their reliability or dependability. This caused the brand to suffer.

Fast forward to today, they still have a lacklustre image (owed mainly to their past), but at least the quality and performance has increased. I would put them on a par with LDV or GWM. Not great, but not as bad as people think.

A few years ago the boss gave me permission to get a new work vehicle and wanted me to get a cheap Chinese/Korean/Indian shitbox to try out. The only two that made it onto my shopping list after doing some homework were the LDV and the Ssangyong (GWM didn’t have their updated model at the time).

I ended up going the LDV only because the dealer was closer and the T60 had a few nicer creature comforts. But didn’t end up buying either because the LDV dealer had 2018 models on the lot in mid~late 2019 and refused to budge off RRP (this was pre-Covid tax pricing.) even for the old stock units.

    • LOL. Chinese/Indian, no way i'd spend good money on them. But these SsangYong are VERY good quality vehicles. The fact that you would buy Chinese over a SsangYong whilst also claiming it has nicer creature comforts is laughable. The Musso is a far more refined vehicle, if you were blindfolded you would not think it was a diesel ute it's so quiet and smooth.

  • IMO they are more like good bang for buck rather than underrated. You get what you pay for and they probably aren’t overpriced.

  • We bought a 2012 Ssangyong Korando for $6000 5 years ago. For 5 years it was AMAZING and an absolute bargain, we loved it (because it was so much car for the money) and it didn't go wrong.

This year it has gone wrong, with a weird engine light fault that comes on after 5 minutes and lowers the power in a sort of limp mode. Restart the car and it's gone, but always comes back after 5 minutes.

No garage has been able to fix it. The Ssangyong dealers themselves cannot scan it because it's "too old" for their software to scan, (which seems insane- they're Ssangyong dealers!!) Various mechanics have guessed at parts to replace but it hasn't worked. But because nobody can scan it, we're stuck.

So honestly, I think they're super underated at the price we got it, a Kia would have cost twice that, it gave us 5 years of high mileage, but it is unceremoniously dead earlier than it needed to be because they're so rare and the support network absolutely sucks.

I have a 2020 musso ute with 90 thousand kilometres in it since new.

Best car I ever had. If I had to purchase again today I would probably do it again, even if the new grill is ugly AF. What were they thinking?

Jump on any of the owner groups on Facebook. I have never seen so little complaints on any is the other brands pages.

    • When you’ve got lower expectations you put up with niggles a bit more and tend not to complain as much.

      • Mate they have just ranked higher than Triton and hilux SR5 by the caradvice people.

I can only say that you have never driven one. Ldv is full of niggles. The musso hasn't given me one thing to complain about.

I have had Fords, Mitsubishis and had three misfortune to use an ldv for a while. Day and night.

  • There is nothing inherently wrong with them, they are quite good buying.I know of a few owners who have owned them.Issues?Literally zero.Buy with confidence.
