Finally been hanging out for it to go back to $400+ giftcard

  • +1

Finally a 12 month Plan which is good but there have been better…

  • +11

The Good Guys are offering the same deal for those interested.

  • +17

Holding on for 500+. Hopefully not far away.

    • Haven't seen them doing $500 for a long time

  • +18

don't forget to ask on telstra chat for $20 port in credit. I managed to get this last time (after a few tries) so it ends up being $49 each month.

    • +3

What do you say/ask for in the chat to get the port in credit? Just straight up ask for it? TIA!

      • +8

i just said "my friend who ported in managed to get a $20 port in credit, can I get it too". depends on the agent you speak to, if they say no, just disconnect and try again. I had to try a few times to get someone who said yes. For reference, I tried this in May this year on this same $69 + $400 JB GC deal and I was successful.

        • +3

I said the same thing a few weeks ago and it worked for me too.

          • +1

@chomper: Yeah me three, i had the same line and it also worked, wondered if they just sick of all the same lie and just give to us to go away…lol

        • I tried this last week however they were only able to give me a $10 port in credit lol

      • +2

I've always been confused on this, why Telstra even bothers saying yes.

Me: "Hi, I want $10/20 off a month"
Telstra rep: "You've signed a 12 month contract already, we're under no obligation to give this to you and you'll probably jump ship after 12 months for someone cheaper or to get another gift card. So sure, why not".

I guess it's an option for the people to offer on the phone (port in credit is obviously a good incentive) but surely someone looks at how often they hand this out on things like the JB deals.

        • -2

I think that’s a bad working culture in Telstra where few bad apples just want to ‘punish’ the company by giving the discounts.

If the port in discount is not a written policy, then they should not giving it away to anyone at all.

Or it’s a preference of some sort by the same staffs (Telstra can audit the system to find who gave the discount btw)

    • +4

I had a few tries with no success.

It's up to the individual rep I guess.

      • yeah we need the script from the one that had success. cheers

      • they will act like they know nothing about it, cant do it, or you have to go back to JB but really its about trying the right operator and it'll be done in mins.

        • -4

Then probably it always be the same guys who gave away the discount.

Otherwise if it’s a written policy fromTelstra, then everyone can get it by porting in.

Telstra should audit this scandal before customers thinks something dodgy policy is happening inside Telstra. (An investigation by media might be enough to uncover the ‘actors’)

      • +2

I had to try about 5 different times to finally get it. keep trying!

    • So you have to sign up to the JB plan first, then ask via online chat with Telstra to hopefully get the $20/month off port in credit?

  • -2

Does Telstra still offering $10 port-in credit via chat? Anyone can provide any success?

    • +1

      See the above comment.

  • +2

I wouldn't mind the $1200 gift card deal again for 24 months, I've done the $500/12m ones a few times now.

    • +1

That's 99 plan right? You pay $720 more over 24m but get $400 more… I guess if you use over 100gb it works

      • And I get to claim more of it on wfh and business with the higher plan. Might wait for new iphone to come out b4 jumping on any 1200 gc promos. Don't feel safe holding that much in the drawer.

      • I got $600 gift card on $99 plan with $20 off ($79 pm).

  • +1

How long do I need to port out of telstra to be considered a "port in" for this deal?

    • +3

      1 month - or 30 days.

      • Thanks, will try again next time this comes around then

      • Two weeks worked for me

    • +1

I know someone who ported out, then signed back up the next day.

      • I Ported over and went back to Telstra about 20 minutes later .. and JB were fine.

  • Just checking again that those already with/on Telstra have been able to sign up a new service and transfer an existing number on an old service over to the new service and cancel the old?

    • +1

Used to be able to. Not anymore based on most recent experience (Apr)

      • Dang. Cheers mate

    • I did this exact switch on the same $69pm $400 gift card JB deal in April and also got a $10pm credit via chat.

  • +1

Can anyone confirm if Telstra still allows swapping plans to avoid having to port out? I saw a comment on a previous post saying they have closed the loophole.

Example, I’m already on a Telstra month to month, I sign up to this deal as a new customer and get a new number, go to Telstra, swap numbers so this new plan is tied to my old phone number, then cancel month to month with new phone number.

    • +2

      Loophole closed AFAIK

      • I did it last year and it worked just fine, was a bit of mucking about.. but it worked.

        • -1

          It's been closed since.

          • @[Deactivated]: I did this method approx May this year. A fair bit of mucking around, both through chat and in person. Telstra store seemed confident they could do it, but I'd avoid the muck around and risk given the option…

            • @Ozbuya: As far as I know it depends on which system your phone number is in. Telstra have about 3 systems that some accounts don’t get moved from. So if you’re in the “legacy” system then I think it can be done but if you’re in the new system it can’t be done

              • @Techdinosaur: Interesting, I reckon my number would've been in the legacy system as I've had it for 10 years

    • what loophole?

  • Anyone got a decent mobile plan with another carrier that I can take advantage of the deal next time it comes around? Currently on telstra.

    • +1

      kogan 3month 15.9

    • I did Kogan mobile starter pack. $2.90 for 30 days for 20GB Data and unlimited calls and text. They use Vodafone.

    • i just port out of Woolworth Mobile (pre-paid) 2 weeks ago. Am I eligible to port back into this contract?

      • +1

You can’t have been with Telstra, Boost or Belong mobile within the last 30 days. Although Woolworths use Telstra network they don’t count as an existing Telstra customer so if you were with Woolworths for over 2 weeks and haven’t ported from Woolworths to the aforementioned providers in the last 2 weeks then you are fine.

        • thank you! got my $400 gc after signing up.

  • +1

Anyone have feedback on how Telstra plans are for overseas travel?
I did the jb hifi deal in 2020 knowing I wouldn’t need roaming data. But went back to Voda for the $5 international roaming data.
Would love to get back on Telstra network and also get Jb voucher while at it.

    • +2

Not good - avoid at all costs for overseas travel.

    • +1

Local Sim or Voda for short trips is best. $$$$$

    • JB deal should be eligible for Telstra Day Pass, which I think isn't as good as Voda's $5 roaming

      https://www.telstra.com.au/international-roaming

      • Telstra day pass is $5
        Pd for 500mb.

        Optus is $5pd for 5GB

Vodafone is $5pd for Data allowance

        • +2

Telstra day pass is only $5 for New Zealand, everywhere else is $10 for the same data so it doesnt make a huge amount of sense compared to a local sim in the country of destination.

          • +2

@camr00: Unless you need to keep your number active, or for short trips

    • +1

If you are going to use a local sim and have a dual sim/e-sim phone, then go to Boost.
Although there is no roaming, Boost can piggyback on data from sim in your phone/WiFi when available and it will work as if you are in Australia (calls to Australia wont cost a thing and you will receive the texts for your OTPs etc.)
I recently did this on an overseas trip for 2.5 months. It worked flawlessly except for some hiccups which were caused by my phone not any other factor.

      • What about calling someone? Going to NZ next month and planning on porting to Felix for a free month + $20 int roaming.

        • Yes, you can call all numbers in Australia from the boost sim if you have data availability from the second(local) sim or WiFi.

          • @alterego13: That's interesting. How are calls conducted over data?

            • @Techie4066: VoWiFi - Voice Over WiFi (a little misleading as it can piggyback on data from local sim too…so no need of WiFi really)
Even i was surprised to hear about it but took a chance and it worked brilliantly!
Edit: Telstra prepaid works the same way I believe.

              • @alterego13: And VoLTE for 4G data? How cool.
Sounds like a bit of research needed to find the right local provider. I guess a Skinny SIM would work in NZ.
What do you think, delay activating my next year on Boost with a free month on Felix, or have Boost + Skinny simultaneously?

                • @Techie4066:

And VoLTE for 4G data? How cool.

Just to make it clear, you won't be able to access data from Boost sim outside of Australia.

I have no idea about Skinny SIM but I guess if it's local to NZ then it should work.

What do you think, delay activating my next year with Boost with a free month on Felix, or have Boost + Skinny simultaneously?

Really up to you…I needed my Australian number to be active so this worked like a treat for me!

Edit: Here's the Telstra page explaining Vo-WiFi and WiFi-SMS
                  https://www.telstra.com.au/support/mobiles-devices/telstra-w…

              • @alterego13: Telstra postpaid also works fine.

                • @b3au: That's great to hear!

I haven't personally tried it on Telstra Postpaid so I couldn't confirm.

                  • @alterego13: Yep, any Telstra (prepaid/postpaid/'Upfront') or Boost service.

      • +1

Can you explain a bit clearer on how you achieved this? I switched to Felix last month just because their roaming is cheap. Went to Vietnam for 4 weeks. The roaming is terrible, most of the time there was no connection even though the signal bar is full and it is connected to the local provider. I don't have dual Sim phone but i used 2 phones, one for the Au number as I need it to be on all the time, the other phone with Vietnam SIM. I am going to Vietnam in December for 2 months and I need the roaming to work perfectly. My wife was roaming with her Telstra postpaid and it worked fine but it cost $10/day which is costly if you go for long time like us. I don't mind having 2 phones with each other all the time, as long as there is solution for the AU number to roam perfectly as I need to receive calls from AU and sometimes need to call back to AU from my AU number. Of course whenever I can use Facetime/Viber….I always try to use. If possible please PM me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you

        • I'm not totally sure as I'm planning on using it next month in NZ.
The Vodafone partner network in Vietnam must have poor service, whereas all 3 major providers are used in NZ while roaming. It's mostly trial and error so I'd stick to what works for you. I've seen Optus has some great value travel packages.

        • +5

          Hi @living4music
So here's how I achieved this
I have Boost prepaid let's call it Sim 1 (S1). For me this S1 needs to remain active while I'm overseas as it is my business number so I need to be able to receive calls and make calls to Australia.

When I reached the destination country I bought a local sim, lets call this Sim 2(S2). For me it was just a matter of choosing the default sim for data(S2) in my dual sim phone, enable WiFi calling for Sim 1 and off I went! There was no mobile coverage for S1 but I was able to receive calls, make calls to Australian numbers, receive SMS and send SMS to Australian numbers from S1.

Now since you will be carrying two phones, you will just turn on hotspot on your S2 (local sim), connect the phone with S1 to hotspot from S2 and it should work like a charm!!

You can simulate this at home by turning 'on' the flight mode on the phone with your Boost/Telstra prepaid sim, then turn on only WiFi on the phone while still keeping it in Flight Mode, you should see a little handset with the wifi symbol in your status bar (provided you have WiFi calling enabled in the handset). To test, try to make a phone call…you will be connected. So although you have no mobile network (because you're in flight mode), the sim is piggybacking on to a data connection to make and receive calls and messages. Same principle works when you're overseas and don't have a mobile network but your VoWiFi and WiFi-SMS still work!

          Hope this is clear?
PM if you need more help :)

          • +2

@alterego13: wow didnt know you can do Voice over Wifi via another SIM? Have u tried this with an esim?

            • +1

@cauilfield: Yup, the local sim in the overseas country was an e-sim, because Boost doesn't do esims yet.
It was a little glitchy with the Galaxy S21, but flawless on the iphone 12

            • @cauilfield: iOS launched this a few years back, and some recent Android phones also support it.

          • @alterego13: This is highly dependent on handset compatibility!!

          • +1

@alterego13: Great tip on simulating whether it will work!

        • +1

Your phone also has to support WiFi calling and Wifi SMS.

          • @prhino: Yes, Correct!
            Handset compatibility is very important.

          • @prhino: It's called VoLTE when you're not connected to wifi.
Never heard of SMS over wifi… is this enabled on Boost? Looks like it is on Telstra.

            • +1

@Techie4066: Yes, Telstra/Boost are the 'same' when it comes to things like WiFi Calling and VoLTE.
              Been supported for a while;

              • Wi-Fi SMS: 04 May 2020
              • Wi-Fi Calling from overseas: 19 August 2020
              • MMS over Wi-Fi Calling: 19 August 2020

              https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/telstravolte

              • @b3au: Thanks. What would we do without whirlpool.
Looks like everyone will be trying out VoLTE roaming for their first time, since it launched during travel restrictions. To me it sounds like it could be unreliable.
How can I get texts over 3G/4G, or do I have to wait to be connected to wifi?

                • @Techie4066: As long as your iPhone is running iOS 13 or newer, it can use the other SIM's data for "WiFi Calling". https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT209044
However, Apple say the SIM can't be roaming - so in NZ you'd have to pick up a NZ SIM, and use it with your Telstra/Boost SIM.

When your phone sees "No Service" or "SOS Only" for Telstra/Boost, 'WiFi' calling can kick in, which will use the NZ SIM data for WiFi Calling.
So you don't pay roaming or any extra - because you're not roaming; you're using WiFi.

But this only works with Telstra - Optus/Vodafone geoblock WiFi Calling, so it can't be used overseas or with local SIMs in other countries.

                  • @b3au: I'm using an S22 which is compatible with eSIM/dual SIM but maybe not WiFi calling over LTE piggybacking between SIMs (the local eSIM used for cellular). Trying to find out here
And oh - it truly is "WiFi" calling over LTE, not VoLTE. Confusing!
Sounds simple enough to use, actually refreshingly so after hearing of the nightmares of roaming. What about pure old SMS/MMS (not RCS) over "WiFi" to my Boost number, what happens then?

                  • @b3au: Got off an hour long chat with Boost via Telstra support. Bottom line is the following according to a rep:

Here how it goes, for Boost service the Overseas wifi calling is not available, secondly for Boost service there are no available eSim yet. Even if you are using the Sim 2 slot you have to access to your Boost sim it will still not work because the Boost sim will be on SOS. So to be honest the service for Boost will be not available. … The sim it self have an option to use Backup calling or WiFi calling. This can only be use if the Provider itself is eligible for it. For Boost the service it self don't have that, that is why even when you activate it on your end the Boost sim will not work. … Your sim is using a Boost service wherein the connection itself don't have access to work on overseas service even using Backup calling or WiFi calling. The wifi calling will only be used if the service have activated the International roaming. Since the Boost sim is not available for International roaming even VoLTE will not work because once you bring your sim overseas it will be on SOS, that is why as of the moment we are providing other options for your to use the service whilst Boost don't have yet the International roaming available on the service.

Basically they say overseas features aren't enabled on Boost. Not sure how accurate that is but I'd already done heaps of explaining. Will I really be stuck on SOS when routing through WiFi/eSIM data?

                    • +1

                      @Techie4066:

I used this feature (VoWiFi & WiFi-SMS) for a 2.5month visit to India. It worked absolutely flawlessly. I made & received calls and text messages (RCS did not work and MMS had it's own issues)

I confirmed this will work 100% with Boost support before leaving Australia without a backup roaming sim, and it did.

                      • @alterego13: Thanks, that's super reassuring (and disappointing Telstra support aren't across Boost features). I want to know what I should get of the following secondary plans (what's compatible) out of a local SIM, Australian SIM or data-only travel SIM - what worked for you?
This is more complicated than it should be but it seems no one has the answers for sure.

      • Telstra also offers this, though it didn't work for me (Pixel 6 Pro) in the US. It worked for my partner on an iPhone 13.

        • Yes, only works with Telstra prepaid and upfront? plans. At least from what I've heard.

          • +2

@alterego13: Works on ye olde postpaid plans too - the 'risk' is trying to not rack up PAYG roaming charges (which you can't do with prepaid or Upfront)

          • @alterego13: We were both on prepaid.

    • If you only need a small amount of data and want to take your phone with you, go for Felix $20 365 day roaming pack (100mins calls, 100 texts and 3GB data).
That's if the allocation is enough for you. It'll be enough for me, and provide more for less on a short trip.

      • Last month I used Felix for a trip to Vietnam for 4 weeks, the roaming was terrible, it can still connect to local provider but the call/text would not work properly. Most of the time it failed, only sometimes I could receive SMS.

        • Depends on the Vodafone partner network, country to country.

          • @Techie4066: before getting the Felix Sim, I did check that it works in Vietnam. In reality, it was terrible, most of the time it didn't work properly. Only sometimes.

            • @living4music: I don't think you understand. Vodafone looks to use Gtel/Gmobile in Vietnam which may have been your problem. They are an MVNO and might use a poor network of the 4 in Vietnam - do you remember which one?
On the other hand, Australia and NZ providers have a reciprocated agreement to roam between all major networks.

            • @living4music: Found another anecdote rating Voda roaming poorly in VN.
