Do I Need a Modem on nbn HFC? Any Suggestions on Router?

I have HFC. I currently have an oooold telstra modem connected to the NBN supplied connection box. My wifi is dropping out very often requiring reconnection of all devices before they will connect to the internet. So I think its time to go. I also have a powerline adapter to the front of the house. Its a clunky setup.

I'm a bit confused about what I need to replace the telstra modem/router. I've seen suggestions to get a Telstra Smart modem gen 2 off marketplace. Seems it would do the trick but the wifi reviews are terrible. So then maybe I'd add a mesh on like the Deco M5 that seems to be popular here. Or do I just need the Deco M5 and can skip the telstra box?

Im with FlipTV HFC NBN currently - which I have seen is PPPoE (DHCP) - Does this affect my choice? Happy to change provider though so thats not a biggie.

Im a bit confused. Any suggestions from those more knowledgable than me would be appreciated.

No modem required for hfc. Can connect a router directly to the ntd

    • thanks!

The nbn NTD (nbn connection box) for HFC is a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. Plug in a Deco M5 into the nbn NTD.

On nbn HFC, nbn supplies a HFC Modem. This Modem will only connect to 1 networking device. (On nbn FTTN, the end-customers supply their own FTTN Modems. A FTTN Modem is not a HFC Modem.)

To distribute the HFC broadband service to your multiple devices at home, you need to connect a Router (or more frequently a combo device called a Wireless Router) to the HFC Modem.

A Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 is a combo unit that includes the functions of a Wireless Router as well as the function of a FTTN Modem (not HFC Modem). You can connect a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 to the nbn HFC Modem.

PPPoE (DHCP) - Does this affect my choice?

This is the "language" that your service provider will use to "talk" to your Router. It is a commonly used "language" and most Routers will understand it. Before you purchase a Router, just quickly check its specs and make sure it can "talk" PPPoE.

  • Thanks. Yes, I think i was getting confused by the FTTN/P/B advice. Thanks for your explanation!

If you are still with Telstra & call them about the modem issues they will probably offer to send you a new model of modem at no charge.

    • The Smart Modem 3 is quite good

    • Thanks, left Telstra many years ago but brought the modem with me.
