I was really considering coming back for a while but I can't justify the monthly sub as I'm a casual gamer. I wish there was a cheaper option or a time based sub.

    • they used to have 30 days of game time for 16.50 but removed that, now you can only buy 60 days of game time for 39, jacked the price of 2 months by 6 bucks. bastards.

      • +1

What are you talking about? The 1 month option is still showing up for me - it's $19.95 though.

        • that's a subscription, the game time was a one time payment that wouldn't auto renew.

          https://screenrant.com/world-warcraft-removes-time-purchase-…

          • @[Deactivated]: You can sub and immediately cancel the renewal without any issues.

Though I wouldn't bother until Dragonflight.

        • Yeah i started playing again just last week, after 6years break. They charge $19.95 for a month to play. I also paid $59.95 9days ago for shadowlands xp, with no lvl50 toon boost, just the xp. So seeing this just peeved me off! Lol
You can simply do 1-month at a time as you mentioned. Dunno why they're saying 2-month minimum.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: That was published in March 2021. They copped a lot of hype and backlash for changing to 60days option only.
Blizzard are as greedy now as they were 16years ago with WoW (not so mucb with the Diablo series).
But i suppose their way of thinking is "if they keep paying, why change it?".
I wonder how much they make per year from WoW alone??

    • +2

They still charge for it? How 2000s.

      • Yeah, subscription based services definitely ended in 2009

        • +7

Dang, someone better go tell the Final Fantasy 14 devs, they are barely getting by with their 40 million or so players

          • @lordezekiel: And, you know, Netflix, kayo, Disney, prime, ebay plus, paramount, Stan, binge, Xbox game pass, playstation +, Nintendo online, etc…

            • +4

@King Steuart: You mean all those services that provide multiple platforms of media in their subscriptions rather than just the 1 game…

          • @lordezekiel: there is zero chance ffxiv has 40million subs. that is insanity

            • @jonnys1n: It included people who were playing the free trial where you can play the first two or three expansions for free.

        • Most games like this have gone F2P. Comparing it to media streaming services or services with multiple games isn’t the same thing.

    • You can still get it fairly cheap from grey sellers -G2A have 60 days of game time for $32.73 via PayPal, which is $16.30/m

      • They state can't be activated in Australia? I know they are North American versions, can you confirm they work?

        • As long as your bnet account is set for US it will work.

It says it doesn't activate in Australia, but it will work on your account.

    • +1

You should check out Guild Wars 2, no sub fee.

    • I haven't played for years. Really wish they would do a 7 day trial like they used to for returning players who haven't touched it in ages.

Maybe they don't expect you to get hooked as easy these days..

    • I looked at possibly playing casually a while ago, but the million expansions they charge for plus monthly cost…..eeek

  • -8

Eww retail. Wotlk classic is far better then this nightmare.

    • -1

How do you know? It's not even out yet. xD

      • +1

Game was out a whole 10-15yrs ago, wdym. Its a rerelease, and ive played plenty of wrath private servers. Retail bad, classic wotlk good.

        • The original wotlk was out back then but a LOT has changed. WoW classic, shadowlands, diff versions… lvl100 is now lvl40, can't play classic with toons leveled in shadowlands or whatever it is. I still don't understand the whole xp change-around……

  • Can confirm this works, thanks. Been a while since played WoW, worth another look around.

  • +1

Title is confusing/wrong, I think it should be "Free to Previous WoW Expansion Owners"?

I would actually try this but having to pay for 2 months of subscription means it's not really "Free".

    • Title edited. Cheers bro

    • 1 month, not 2.

      • Can you buy a single month of gametime?

        • Yes, it's $19.95. In fact there isn't even a 2 month option, only 1, 3 and 6.

    • You can open a ticket and ask for some free game time. They usually give you a week free.

    • I have an old sub. It doesnt offer me Shadowlands when i log into battle.net. I imagine i have to sign up for a month before it offers it to me?

  • I'm a Hunter, level 2

    • +1

      Bargain hunter?

    • +4

In the outside world, I'm a simple geologist, but in here…I am Falcorn, Defender of the Alliance. I've braved the Fargodeep mine and defeated the Bloodfish at Jarod's Landing.

      • Pfffft bloody Alliance
        :P lmao

Sub is now $19.90 a month or ~$240 a year. Given the limited amount of end game content they have been releasing, it's getting harder and harder to justify the subscription cost. On the other hand, Xbox game pass Sub is cheaper and has tons of games and they keep adding more every month.

Luckily there's Classic to play now so at least Classic Wrath has me excited. Pre-patch launches on 29th Aug / 30th here. So going to continue my sub that I started in 2007. sigh.

    • I hadn't played since the start of BFA and felt like coming back. Saw in the sub increase and didn't have enough gold for a token so that was that. Not worth $20 a month, in my opinion.

    • Pretty crazy given it now plays more like an instance running simulator and less like an open world MMORPG — World of Diablo3craft, basically.

  • +4

Can't even give that expansion away.

    Okay here's my pitch.
Got that itch to play WoW again?
Don't want to give your money to this scumbag company anymore?
    Searching for a bargain?
Join Wobblin' Goblin - Free Australian based WoW private server with Single Player modded dungeons and raids for all you mums and dads out there who don't have time to wait around for the afk healer/tank to come back from their 'bio break'.

    • thanks very much, I had no idea this existed!

want to get my kids involved, but no way I'm paying subs for each of them!

    • Is it any fun playing in basically an empty world?

      • Yep, coz it's just to casually jump in and scratch that itch.
Lots of quality of life changes like teleport to all dungeons and faster xp gain, solo instances etc
All good things for a quick fix for the time-poor gamer.
        (More time to F5 OzB)

  • +4

After logging onto my Battle.net, I realised I actually already own Shadowlands and gave up on it quite a long time ago.

  • In three years this game will be twenty years old, crazy.

    • U mean 2 years time

      • +1

Now it's 1 year's time, it really is going fast!

        • +1

I'm from the future, get in we're havin a WoW 20yr anniversary party!

  • I thought it WoW always automatically upgrade your to the whatever last expansion before the current one.

So in this case, if you don't do anything, when Dragonflight expansion is released, you will get Shadowland anyway. It's always been like this to prevent returning players needing to buy all of the expansion that they missed out on when they come back.

This deal is just so that you can play the expansion earlier.

    • That, and a free level boost. The chances of anyone having an active sub, but not the latest expansion is kind of low. I think they did something similar to this before with Pandaria.

      • I claimed both "gifts" and the free level boost can only be applied if you have active subs - which I don't and I have no intention to renew

        • Open a ticket and they usually give you some free time.

      • Ummm what? Millions play wow classic with a current sub and no shadowlands LOL

        • Let me reword it then, how many people really wanted to play SL, had an active sub, but waited until now to get it? It'll be free soon anyway. This promo is aimed at people that quit, and don't pay. It's an attempt to give them a taste of SL, and possibly entice them back into paying. No one was playing the previous expansion and paying for a sub.

          • @[Deactivated]: Let me put it this way! None of my
Classic guild bought shadowlands, but we are all having a bash around on it now….

It’s aimed at people with a current sub who never bought shadowlands…. Yes there’s a lot of people who fall into that bucket.

Even when shadowlands rolls into the base game at dragon flight prepatch, you will still need an active sub to play shadowlands. Not sure what your whinging about here.

      • Chances are pretty high actually, I am an active classic player and never bought shadowlands. I'd say a lot of us classic players would have.

  • So I haven’t played since 2007. I looked at the battle net desktop program and it has the freebie available for me. What I can’t understand is why I have listed in games:

    WoW1 (US)
    WoW2 (US)
    WoW3 (US)
    WoW4 (US) - Starter Edition

Did I get the game 4 times? Lol

    Which do I choose?
    And what is classic wow?

    • I'm still learning what all the changes are. Lvl100 is now lvl40, 150=60. Classic, zandalar, and something else…. confusing the crap outta me. Can't use old toon in classic i think… gotta start over again. Story has changed which is confusing me more… grrrrr

    • I had something similar - only WoW1 (US) and WoW2 (US).
I also found that I had 2 copies of the expansion to claim. So I claimed one for WoW1 and the other for WoW2
