Is It Safe to Book Flights through Online Travel Agency Websites Such as Expedia?

The reason I ask is that my friends and I are trying to book flights to Mexico during the christmas leave period and if we go to the prices shown directly on the airline, then we are looking at about prices of 4k.

However when using websites such as skyskanner etc they have prices for 2.8k for same travel periods.

How is this possible? Are they selling us tickets that don't exist and there is a high risk that those tickets will get cancelled?

I have used online travel agencies for stuff like accommodation no problem but never flights and a lot of these have terrible reviews online

Expedia and their network of sites (like Hotels.com) is generally reliable and fine to book. You're unlikely to get cancellation, you can input the 6-digit number in the confirmation e-mail into the airline's website directly to confirm the flights.

HOWEVER, those travel agencies are able to offer cheaper rates because of restrictions placed on their ticket offerings. Especially for things like changes or cancellations which are either quite pricey to do or not allowed at all. This is where majority of the bad reviews come from, people getting stung because they agreed to something they didn't read.

Make SURE you read all the T&Cs and understand what you are buying. Otherwise, all good.

Not all travel agencies are reputable, make sure it's one of the big chains and not some random one. IATA registration is a good first pass filter.

Wait, can't really use that term anymore can we.

  • My advice is if you do end up booking would be to print / screenshot all relevant pages on the website / app. I was able to get 20kg luggage for free when I pointed out that the APP showed this was part of the inclusive price of the flight. After originally charging me for this luggage, they refunded this when I send them the screenshot.

  • Is one of your friends named SeanA?

  • I've been using Expedia for years, never had any problem. Once the ticket is issued, you can track and update it on airline's website.

    Don't use gotogate

Many of those sites will chain flights together, that will require you to collect your luggage and check in during layovers as you switch between airlines

    Expedia is fine.

Don't use the cheaper ones from Skyscanner. Those ones are dodgy.

Online travel agents can be cheaper because they can combine different airlines in one itinerary that you can't directly buy from one airline. They also share some of their commission with you.

  • Look out for T&C! Some airlines still offers unlimited changes for FREE, but most of the online agencies will charge a fee for changes. If your date is fixed, then go ahead with the online agencies, but if you have uncertainty, it MAYBE beneficial to go to book direct if they offer fee-free changes.

Generally you should always book with the airline. If for any reason you need to change or cancel or any other issues you may have you will be pleased you booked direct. You can also always convince the airline to give you travel credits in case you cancelled.

If you booked through expedia which in my opinion is a top tier travel agent website comparing to byojet, aunty betty, smartfares, edreams, etc. These are all trash and you should stay away.

Even if you booked with expedia, they ask you to contact the airline for any waivers. So might as well book direct. If expedia is 2.8k and the airline is 4k I might book on expedia with a credit card with trip interruption insurance or buy the insurance for if it's cheap.

  • @op just wondering if you ended up booking with Expedia as I'm also has the same concern.

I'm also just wondering if you are able to upgrade your flight with your accumulated miles say after you book with Expedia through the airlines website.
