Most Reliable Travel Agency or Airline to Use? (Traveling from Cairns, QLD to Seoul)

Hi,

I'm planning a trip from Cairns, QLD to Seoul in November and I'm having trouble deciding which airline/travel agency to book with.

The 3rd party options I saw were Cheers Travel, Aunt Betty, BYOjet, Jettzy and BudgetAir. I checked all their reviews and they were terrible. I read that booking directly with the airline was better so I checked Singapore Airlines, but the tickets are "Non-Refundable", and their reviews were also bad, so what's the benefit of booking directly with the airline if the tickets are non-refundable anyway? (I thought that was the whole point of booking directly with the airline?)

It seems like there's no good choices.

What do you guys recommend?

Not Jetstar….had our return flight cancelled while we were there.

Book directly with Singapore, and choose a more flexible ticket i.e standard or flexi. You pay more for the ticket but you can still cancel with a small $ penalty.

To keep it very simple - plane tickets are like some things you buy at the shop. Buy a discounted item and it is likely you cannot return it, however, buy a full-priced item - you can take it back for a change of mind, etc.

buying tickets with a travel agent (ie; a website sponsored via skyscanner) is buyer beware…….they have T&C's coming out the wazoo and generally do not match what the airlines T&C's are - looking at you amex travel / byojet.

Buy from the airline direct is always my approach these days, being burnt too many times.

Singapore airlines are easily the best international airline out of Australia, in fact they have the most international flights out of Australia of any airline. Singapore airlines flys out of cairns as well to singapore then you can get another singapore airlines flight to south korea - same airline - checked through baggage - seems like a no brainer.

If you fly any other airline you will transit via another country or city AND change airline

All airlines have non-refundable tickets, these are generally the saver - singapore airlines / red-e deal - qantas / discount tickets - best price / no wiggle room. But remember that's cancellation on your end, not the airline making changes. Its not the airlines fault if your flakey and change your mind last minute.

so I checked Singapore Airlines, but the tickets are "Non-Refundable", and their reviews were also bad

Reviews on the internet are a fickle thing, Singapore Airlines fly 3m+ people each year and most people aren't going to write a review on it. They only complain when it goes wrong instead. They also go back years, the reviews for Qantas from 2018 don't apply to 2022, for example.

Singapore also has refundable flights, you've just gotta pay for it. Most airlines aren't fully refundable for change of mind on their basic flights though. Otherwise I'd book up every cheap flight I could on the off chance I could make a trip.
