Gen 5 is double the speed. Waiting for Gen 5 ddr/pcie/.. configuration :)

What exactly do you need double the speed of gen4 for? Even run of the mill gen 3 drives are more than enough for majority of workloads… These are popular due to their compatibility with PS5s

I'd say if you have 32GB RAM, a faster PCIE4.0 drive will hibernate faster i.e. 7 seconds vs 15s for PCIE 3.0 drives. In theory anyway.

        • I've been using 32G RAM since 2017, and full PCIE4.0 (2 x 980pro, 6800XT) since 2022. Didn't see much of a difference in, well, most games, as either I have to wait for other people loading (for online games), or my hardware is too new for the pc game to be running optimized (mostly due to AMD driver). The FPS is very satisfying though, even under ultimate settings on an ultra wide screen.

          • @WayneOZ: Did you test time to hibernate though?

            • +1

@robertm: I never use hibernate as to me, this function is a bit of pointless. My daily drive PC as stated above starts/restarts really quick, like 1 sec BIOS screen, 2 secs Win screen and ready for accepting password, and instant desktop right after pressing enter. I use this PC mostly for gaming and browsing, and hibernate matters on none of them. Sometimes I put it into sleep as I need to continue soon (or tomorrow), and it snaps into sleep in 1 sec as well as wake up when I move the mouse or press any key. This works faster and easier for me even if it just saves me another 5 secs.

    • That requires a whole new PC build.

    • PCIe 5.0 is double the speed of PCIe 4.0 per-lane, but that doesn't mean the devices using it will be, especially at the start — It's mainly dependent on the flash/controller — Plus, the commonly cited speeds are just for sequential burst, for random reads or something like a 50GB zip we ain't anywhere near the limit.

rtx 30 series barely uses pcie 4.0

    • +1

mmm yes spend even more money for even less benefit

      • Bragging rights : price-less

    • I heard that m.2 gen 5 is actually changing the layout a little bit. Incompatible with gen 4 and earlier.

      Not cool

  • +3

Not terrible, but i would still prefer the recent 980 Pro deal with local warranty

    • You can easily register them for local warranty as I did

      • I believe you still need to return them to the country they were purchased though. Which is more of a hassle.

        Each to their own though.

  • You can pay for the monthly prime then get free delivery.

    • +1

Nah it's still $15.59 for prime members

    • +1

ive got prime and it is not free delivery

      • It worked for me yesterday, must of expired.

I ordered this drive from Amazon UK last year, it had postage cost as extra, I chatted to customer service and they refunded the postage, no issues.

  • Fantastic drive - but it runs hot, make sure you chuck a heat sink on it or it will throttle.

Very very very fast and actually hit 7100/5200 on my machine.

Its only cheap as the SN850X has been released which is marginally faster

  • WTF noooo I paid 340 :((

  • This certainly is NOT "Next-gen". PCIe5 SSDs will be available in about two weeks.

Problem is, currently a top or high end Z690 board is required if you want to use PCIe gen 5 SSDs. The motherboard needs to support splitting the PCIe gen 5 x16 lanes into 2 PCIe gen 5 x8. Ideally, you want the x8 to then split to x4 x4. If you only want to get 1 PCIe gen 5 MVMe SSD, then I guess it is okay (the motherboard will split that x16 into x8 / x8). However, it appears that if you want 2 PCIe gen 5 NVMe SSDs, you need to cough up extra money to buy another AIC.

Majority of the cost effective (inc. mid range) boards won't do that. If you are rich enough to go for PCIe gen 5 MVMe SSDs right away, then surely this SSD at this price is loose change.

      • And all that to save maybe 2 or 3 seconds over an old 2.5" sata ssd, because no o.s / bios infrastructure/ apps have been optimised to support any of this yet.

  • I paid $288 delivered during Prime days. Still yet to hook it up though.

  • I cannot switch to AMAZON UK. Is it expired? Can you verify if the link still working ?
