  • In the market for a portable gaming laptop and looking at the 2022 Asus G14. Any idea if this is a good laptop? Cheers.

It's a very subjective thing. You need to read/watch more reviews and make up your own mind. Generally if you are not too picky on specs, or design, then almost any of the decent brands will do well.

      HP Victus/Omen
      Lenovo Legion / Legion Pro
      Dell G / Alienware
MSI (I don't know their models)
      Asus G / ROG
Acer (I don't know their models)

      All have pretty competitive machines.

Some people will be opinionated from their own good/bad experiences, but their experience does not mean you will be the same.

I highly recommend going into a store and check out the design and type on the keyboard.

The main advantage this laptop has is for gaming. The 6800m can provide better performance than a 3080 mobile, depending on the game, with the latest drivers in pure rasterisation.

The 90wh battery with the power efficient Ryzen CPU also provides much better battery life compared compared to anything Intel can offer in a similar form factor.

The G14 will provide you a good balance when it comes to size. If a 15" laptop is fine, this will provide better gaming performance and similar battery life due to its bigger battery.

I have one of these- Performance wise the desktop equiv would be roughly a Ryzen 3700x with RX 6700 XT.

    No USB4
    No HDMI2.1
    No PCIe4
    No current gen CPU
    No screen brightness

      No DDR5
      No Thunderbolt

        That's a given being a 5000-series Ryzen system

I know, just saying….since we are listing short comings.

No FireWire is the deal breaker for me. How else will I plug in my 30mb zip drive?

        • +5

No 5.25" floppy disk drive. No deal.

          • @xoom: I'm about to be real pedantic here, sorry.
Floppy drives actually used 3.5" drive bays typically
These bays got used for a bit for memory card multireaders in that awkward period where we couldn't decide to all just use SD cards for some reason, and now they're just gone

          Definitely no deal.

        No Condution stovetop :(

      *Screen brightness is 300+ nits
*USB4/Thunderbolt for eGPU would be irrelevant considering that the 6800m is the category of 3080m performance.
*Displayport is supported which can help output to HDMI 2.1 via an adaptor.
*5900Hx is great for gaming whilst being much more power efficient than 12th gen.

      • USB4 isnt even in any of 2022 gaming laptops so?

      • DP output is better anyways

      • As far as user experience goes, you really wont feel how a PCIe gen3 drive is that slower compared to a gen 4 drive especially in gaming. these higher end rogs use PM981a which is a basically an oem 970 evo plus which is hella good

      • ryzen 6000 series is laughable as far as perfromance increase compared to 5000 series anyways, the 5900hx is still plenty powerful for gaming. AATU unlocked undervolting for them as well and you can squeeze quite a bit more out of it.

      • its a 2k165hz panel with 100% dci p3, i cant see it anylower than 300 nits, at least between the range of 300-400 nits which is more than enough for a gaming laptop.

  • +3

    Thanks OP ordered one

  • How does this compare with lenovo legion 5

    • +3

which legion are you looking at? and what specs?

Against most lower specced 5 and 5 pros, it would be better out of the box perfromance wise.

Against legion 5/5pro and 7s with 3070, it would be a bit worse as it dont have a mux switch, but if you use an external monitor with this machine, you performance would be near equal to a 3080 legion 7.

Panel wise, its decidedly better than Legion 5 screen. Against legion 5 pro/legion 7(both have the same panel), its a tossup:

      • Legions got 16:10 at 2k, 165hz with HDR400 ~500 nits @ 100%srgb

      • This got the 16:9 at 2k, 165hz with probably 300-400 nits @ 100% dci p3.

So if you want better brightness and slightly larger panel go with legion or if colour accuracy is what you want the strix is better.

Theres also the cooling solution, I would rate the cooling of the strix AE better than both 5 and 5 pros, but hard to say its better than the legion 7, both get full on vapor chamber, with the strix getting LM on the cpu, but legions PTM 9750 is also no joke

      • Sounds like a decent laptop…everyone raves on about the legion 5 pro so hard to decide

        • heres what I think. If you know you will definitely get an external monitor down the line, this would be the better deal for certain.. However, I would be foolish to say the legion 5 pro isnt a more complete package straight out of the box and an external monitor is still extra $$$ you will have to factor into the cost.

  • +2

Legion 5 pro has better screen.
This has a better GPU and battery life.

  • Fyi the ROG G15 and G14 series has a sleeping issue that prevents the laptop from sleeping and fans remain on with no good fix. It might affect this laptop as well since they have similar internals
    Great price though!

  • Wow review said More performance than a 3070Ti ?
Also, can be charge with usb c

    • more performance than a 3070ti is in an ideal scenario with external monitor attached and with them faster ram but yes. The 6800M is capable of great things with small upgrades down the line.

If you wanted top performance out of the box, the 2.9k m17r5 with the 6850m would be better. But this will bring near equal perf with the upgrades mentioned above.

    • except if your game supports DLSS and ray tracing…

    • 6800M is equivalent to 3080m or higher

  • So is this rog better than
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175311540022?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    Razer Blade 15 Adv - 15.6" 240Hz QHD/i7-12800H/RTX 3070 Ti/16GB/1TB - AU

(Even at sale price days ago at $3.1k)?
Ah the screen and ssd is less

    • +2

Yes. Unless you really needed intel 12th gen for very heavy cpu related workloads.

And btw that 5250aud price tag is absolutely bollocks, you can get an alienware x15r2 for 4.6k and that have the same slimness as an razer blade, a 3080ti and 32gb of ram with the same QHD 240hz panel. razers pricing are are joke more than dell nowadays.

      • +1

Thanks. I wont touch that razer for $3k ayway, out of my budget but this rog at $2.x is tempting.

        • If you are going to get an external monitor sooner or later I don’t think there’s a better deal.

        • Seems like orders from that deal for the 3070 Ti model got cancelled. Not sure what's going on with with the Microsoft Store.

A very good laptop, I have one from earlier. If u use an external display and upgrade the ram its better.

    • Which RAM did you buy to ensure its dual channel? Link? Thanks.

      • I didn't do the upgrade. I run as is and am happy with the performance. Jarrod's Tech has details on ram. Same issue with Lenovo laptops.

      • The Kingston KF432S20IBK2/32 seems to be common pick for this laptop and is what I ordered for my G15. Best price I've seen is from Amazon ($206.18)

  • Would a similar laptop with an rtx3060 and 360hz panel for 1800aud be better?

    • Which one?

      • Says model: G513QM5900-0DACXHA6X20

    • Can you actually see the difference between a 165hz and a 360hz panel?

  • +1

I just bought a refurb of this laptop last week. Hot tip with this laptop is that you will need to disable automatic driver updates if you clean install Windows 11. Otherwise, Windows will keep downloading AMD Radeon drivers that blue screen the system.

    • Where did you buy it from?

      • +1

From Ebay for $1899 ($2199 - $300 voucher). Unfortunately, there was only 5 available and they all sold pretty quickly.

        • Thanks. Was Asus selling them directly via their ebay store? (link just showed a generi page). And you had a voucher for 300$ to use or was it also from Asus?

          Thanks
