If Using a Mesh Like Eero or Google Nest Wi-Fi, Does The Modem Itself Have to Be High Speed/Capacity?

Given the mesh network does all the heavy lifting, does it matter for internet speed what kind of modem I use (assuming our apartment is FTTB and all units bring NBN in via copper line RJ45s)?

eg if I sign up for say a 50/20 plan, will internet speed for any device attached to the mesh be as fast if the mesh router is attached to a cheapie ISP freebie modem with no Gigabit / high level specs, as it would be on a higher specced modem?

Probably not for an apartment. If you're moving data between devices in the house, then that's another thing.

  • There can be differences in VDSL2 modems sync speeds. Don't assume you have FTTB. Check here
