I was looking for a power head and noticed this is back in stock. Good price for those who want a power head that's cheaper than retail ($329) + a free edger. Keep in mind though, this only has a 1 year Amazon warranty instead of a 5 year Ego warranty.

I think I might still get one from Total Tools for the warranty, not sure I need the edger. Is anybody an edging fan?

You are going to need the warranty.

I have the entire EGO system. And so far nearly everything has broken.

    • I have a commercial grade battery powered Stihl hedger, the motor conked out with less than 1 month warranty remaining. Apparently quite common. I really don't trust this battery gear very much at all.

Cheers Tom, I'm almost 2 years on with nothing broken yet. Think I'll still go for the more expensive one with warranty though.

I bought an Ego line trimmer in…dunno…2017? Still going strong.

Got the backpack blower in 2018…ditto.

Added this from Amazon not too long after the blower. Then got the chainsaw attachment. Bought a hedge trimmer in 2019 too. No problems with any of it so far.

I can never understand how the complexity of internal combustion could possibly be more reliable than electric tools (given a similar quality level). That said, the batteries themselves are the weak point no matter what.

I have this, a trimmer and a blower. All going strong. I wonder how often the battery issues are due to poor treatment of lithium cells? I learnt the importance of storing batteries correctly (not storing when discharged at the very least) during the early days of lipo / rc cars. Was a heel of an expensive mistake back then

          • @DanielP2: I probably contributed to my 5ah playing up but happy it was replaced no fuss. Now I charge them and let them discharge to 60 if not used for a bit, sorted in the house away from elements and fluctuations.
            Hope I'm doing it right

            • @cook99: Yep sounds pretty spot on. I think the worst thing is storing them discharged. And fully charged isn't the best either for long term storage.

              • @DanielP2: They say to store them with 30-50% if it's for long periods but if they are idle for 30 days, they self-discharge to 30% and stay there…or so the manual says

                • @whitelie: oh wow, lol i never read that bit. So I guess its not too detrimental to store at full charge, because the battery will set itself to a good store charge. Damn batteries have come a long way over the years :)

So the main thing is just not to leave them completely discharged

    • interesting im over a year in with loads of Ego stuff and use them for a few hrs a week with zero issues

    Boooo… Ego.

In this day and age, playing funny games with warranty support is such a lame thing to do. It's not as if there are genuine product differences between regions that materialy impact safety/suitabilty.

It's a shame that this little loophole wasn't closed when the whole thing around grey import regulations happened a few years back.

Don't the importers often pick up the warranty cost (ie…provide replacements and repairs covered by the margin at which they sell)? I'm not sure on the deal with Ego, but I thought some others work this way, I guess whenever it's a sole importer of the brand into Australia. Of course they're not going to be too keen on providing warranty service for customers who've purchased items they've not imported into the country.

Not sure on Ego though. And where the brand themselves is covering the warranty, then yes, it's a dick move.

It's entirely possible that the distributors carry the cost of domestic warranty, but given how the government keeps caving to the likes of Gerry Harvey to supposedly "level the playing field", it's only fair that things work both ways.

If they want the protections of things like the GST slug on all imports from the likes of Amazon, then it's only reasonable that they treat those imports equally.

  • Isnt amazon au aussie stock?

    • Going by the spiel in the reviews section, nope

  • I have the whole ego ecosystem, I've had 1 battery start to play up out of the 3 it was quickly replaced with a brand new one. Everything else has been flawless, highly recommend.

If Jesus had an EGO he'd still be alive today

You mean he’d stihl be alive today?

Have the ego hedge trimmer after 2 years the gearbox had to be replaced they sent me to some small repair shop and it was fixed. One 5ah battery failed after 18 months all the lights kept flashing red it took almost 2 months to get it replaced. Now another 5ah battery only charges to 3 bars they said a new battery will be sent to me which is good.

  • I've got a dead battery. What's the best way to get an ego battery these days? All the tricks i knew are defunct

    • smash and grab is probably still the cheapest as far as i know
