i've had this for several months and only recently remembered i could handoff music by holding my phone near the top of it. the haptic feedback in the phone as you get closer/further from the homepod is so satisfying

    • +1

Agreed, switched from the iphone x to 11 and i’m addicted to the haptic feedback

  • +1

Are these useful for a Spotify user?

    • +4

It's usable, but you can't use Siri to start playing a song, you need to Airplay from the Spotify app first. (Siri can pause, play, go back/forward once that Airplay session has started).

I wouldn't buy a Homepod Mini for Spotify, Google or Alexa's native integration is much better.

      • OK so it looks like not much has changed since I looked it up last.

        Thanks.

        • +5

yep, to be clear, i don't think this is an apple restriction, spotify still refusing to add support. siri even says 'The app hasnt added support for that' when you ask. the spotify ideas forum has had people for years requesting it as an idea and it's still in limbo.

          biggest bummers are:
          - can't ask siri to play music
          - airplay 1, not airplay 2, so playing and pausing has a 1 second delay. also, airplay requires one extra tap which is slightly annoying to me
          - can't use homepod for automations to play music or sounds (biggest one for me)

          • @KeplersLaws: Yeah Spotify has also screwed up playback from Apple Watch, which was working well for a while.

Corporate decision or genuine technical issues? We'll likely never know.

Eddit: I guess I don't know if this is in Apple's or Spotify's court.

            • @andresampras: I believe it is Spotify. Or at least has been so for a couple of years, not so much when the original HomePod was released and it’s ability to talk with other subscription services was limited.
Ether spotify think it gives them a feature advantage, or the actual market of spotify users that use IPhones and have HomePods is too small for it to bother with.

              Lazy is what it is.

              • @entropysbane: my last post was referring to Apple Watch compatibility - I can't see how not having this capability advantages Spotify.

If it's an Apple restriction I guess I'd understand the reasoning, ie. pushing users towards Apple Music.

Either way, it's frustrating that it's oh so possible yet not available.

                • @andresampras: it's spotify, for sure.
check this out. it has accrued 5k upvotes by now. on a spotify community forum, which i can't say i or anyone i know uses. and it's still gone by the wayside.

The original poster's last sentence was a truly sad one:

"Let's get this implemented so it's ready for general iOS 14 release this September!". RIP. Here Lies OP. Having passed away waiting for native support. Enjoyed his twilight years on Apple Music.

          • @KeplersLaws: hmmm how come I can ask Siri to play music (via Spotify) on my phone and from car?
as far as I know, Spotify has implemented this via Siri Kit.

            • @DiSTURBED-oNE: you are correct.
telling my phone, somewhat wordily, 'hey siri play x by x on spotify in the lounge homepod' WILL work, but that is because it is your phone doing the processing, opening of spotify app, then airplaying it to the homepod. this was indeed a recent addition, maybe about a half year now. noticed it in my car first.

but what we're referring to is native support on the homepod itself

              • @KeplersLaws: I don't have to say "Hey Siri, Play x on Spotify".

All I say is "Hey Siri, play x"/
Siri response "Playing X on Spotify".

Maybe it's because I don't have Apple Music.

                • +1

@DiSTURBED-oNE: right right. but fact of the matter is you're talking about on-phone, which does have support, not by speaking directly on the homepod, like when your phone is not with you

              • +2

@KeplersLaws: 'tis all a pity. I tried AM for a while, the integration is fantastic with Apple devices as you'd expect, but the app experience for me is so inferior. Coudlnt' force myself to like it as much as the Spotify app.

Very similar experience with the Fitbit app experience for fitness and sleep tracking vs. Apple watch. Fitbit app is so clear, but the hardware drove me away after several failures.

  • This or the nest mini?

Nest mini is a lot cheaper.

    • +4

Depends what you're going to use it for, the Nest Mini is cheaper for a reason. The HomePod Mini has much better speakers and tuning, so if you're primarily going to be listening to music (I even use one as a bedroom TV speaker) or if you're already part of the Apple ecosystem it's the obvious choice. If you just need a smart speaker that's widely compatible with fairly acceptable (with over tuned bass) audio, the Nest Mini is fine. But I don't know if the Nest Mini comes in hi-vis like this haha.

Source: Thanks to Home Assistant, I own both

    • +3

Paying Google any money for them to install a wiretap is ill advised

  • Didn’t we have many posts here complaining MobileCiti doesn’t deliver products on time and had to follow up on your order multiple times?

  • Suitable with Android? Samsung or Pixel?

    • Only way I can see is with AirMusic app but need to be rooted

      • not just via bluetooth?

        • Homepod doesn't have a Bluetooth radio. Airplay only.

  • +1

I have the old larger one and this. The old one sounds so much better.

    • +5

goes without saying though, the older one is orders of magnitude larger and more expensive.

  • +1

Coupon doesn't work for me on this item?

    • +1

coupon doesnt seem to work for me on any item ive tried it on including ones in linked as eligible , even after selecting afterpay as the payment method

  • +2

Excellent, another step towards my HomePod-filled house.

    • +1

pop this one right in the fruit basket where it will fit right in!

  • Supposedly new home pod devices coming out soon

    • +1

Supposedly the bigger costlier one though.

  • We're an apple device house but I bought into the Alexa ecosystem because siri was useless and homekit products were $$$$.

    Has much changed?

    • +1

the former - yeah i find her pretty dumb sometimes. but for basic commands like calculations, or home related instructions, she's fine. she will also be able to do things natively like sync reminders to my iPhone reminders so for me the homepod is pretty invaluable.
the latter - yes. homekit products remain expensive but what alleviates the situation is if you use a homekit compatible hub and everything else remains just zigbee - e.g. aqara's lineup of sensors, hubs and other devices. that so far has been palatable for me.

if you're not up to speed, apple amazon and google are all working on a new protocol called Matter, which means any devices with the matter mark will be interoperable with any of the three platforms. the matter protocol will run concurrently/parallel with your existing alexa, google or Homekit accessory protocol (HAP) so your existing stuff will still work.
but you'd need to watch this space a lil longer for matter.

Homekit's open source bridges (Homebridge, Home Assistant and Scrypted) is a big draw for me, and it's improved a lot in the last couple years. Scrypted in particular is so good at integrating unsupported camera ecosystems as if they were native cameras (ie. with secure video records, face recognition, person/animal/package detection, etc). I recently moved house and was able to integrate the previous owner's Swann NVR into Homekit, and it works so much better than Swann's native app.

      • wow, awesome to hear. i wish i could do this with my PV system. would love for my home status to show my current KW generation.

        • HomeAssistant can't help you with that? I got a homebrew script that scrapes my PV web UI and funnel it into HA.

          • @RaihaX: i woudln't have a clue on how to even get started. everything you just mentioned rings a bell. i found a page for my inverter model but have no idea what devices i'd need. home assistant itself needs to run on a device, then i'd need another.. USB-RS485 converter..? much confuse

            • @KeplersLaws: Ah ic - just assume you know HA, Matters etc you would be more hands on with software and/or hardware my apologies!

Yeah if your Inverter doesn't have any connectivity you might need something like a USB-[Insert Port] converter which then connects to a arduino / pi board which has a script where it can send to your HA via something like MQTT.

It is what I do with my old school Home Alarm system to connect to HA; save me having back to base subscription when I can monitor it myself!

        • would love for my home status to show my current KW generation

HomeKit doesn't natively support units of measure for monitoring power, but I'm using Home Assistant to turn them into light sensors. Bit janky but works fine!

          • @evanjd: beautiful! what inverter do you use and how does it scalp those figures?

            • @KeplersLaws: Thanks! It's a Sungrow SG5K-D (plus WiFi V31 module). I'm using this addon to scrape sensor values over WiFi.

For power sensors, I use template sensors in Home Assistant to create a lux sensor that HomeKit can see like so:

              template:
                - sensor:
                    - name: "Inverter active power (W)"
                      unit_of_measurement: "lx"
                      state: >
                        {{states('sensor.inverter_active_power')}}
                    - name: "Inverter power generated today (kWh)"
                      unit_of_measurement: "lx"
                      state: >
                        {{states('sensor.inverter_daily_generation')}}
