Tenda Nova MW6 AC1200 Mesh Wi-Fi Router 4 Pack $159 Delivered @ PCByte

120

Low price on this budget mesh wireless router system from Tenda with PC Byte bundling a 3 pack and a 1 pack together. I think it's a good cheaper alternative to the recently popular TP-Link Deco M5 3 pack if you missed out.

Compared to the Deco M5 this is only AC1200 instead of AC1300, however the MW6 4 pack has more range (~743m² vs 510m²) and each node includes 2 gigabit ports like the Deco M5 nodes. You can add nodes from other Tenda Nova models like the MW3, MW5 and MW12 to expand the mesh network further.

  • Couple questions, I'm on FTTC and have an ISP modem router thingy that is hooked to the nbn box.

    Would this product:

    A. Replace the ISP modem router
    B. Extend range of wifi as I have a thick brick wall between the nbn box and the other room

    Thanks

    • I'm on NBN with Fibre to the house. I have this set up. My NBN modem is in the Garage. I live in a 3-story house, and this works perfectly with just three nodes. This deal is for four, so you will have no trouble. It doesn't replace your modem; you still need that. You just plug one of these units into it and then plug the other in locations that you want. The app will tell you the signal strength of each unit and if you need to move them around.

    • A.) No, will not replace the router. It just takes the signal from your existing router and "extends it"
      B.) Yes, As above.

      • +2

Out of the box, the primary unit will function as a Router (not modem), ie: directly plug into your HFC\FTTP modem and you won't need to use your router.
Mind you, I would not use them as a router as, I personally feel they are under resourced to perform this role.

If your NBN uses a combined modem\router, in-which case this cannot replace the modem and should be configured in Wireless Access Point mode not Router Mode, so your home phone will continue to work. You can then disable the WiFi on your modem\router and use this mesh Wi-Fi instead.
It's important that when used with another router this is in access mode or the existing modem\router is set to bridge mode to avoid a double nat.

HFC and FTTP are often separate modem \ routers. ie: Modem provided by NBN and ISP provides the Router.
FTTN they are normally combined modem\routers.

        • For B) wired is best, then you can use wired backhaul.
But these should work for your use case, remember if not using wired backhaul they are not magic and still require a signal.
So if you have a thick wall that blocks\reduces WiFi, you may require a units on each side of the wall that are not too far apart, so a strong signal can get through.
After you place the first node, use a WiFi signal tester (Android and iOS) to measure the strength and best placement options for the nodes.

      • @tritorius Tenda Nova MW6 can be plugged into the nbn NCD/NTD and replace the ISPs router except with TPG and iinet.

  • Good price for a 4 pack system

  • How does this compare with TP-LINKs.

    • Chalk and cheese. IMO these don't have the grunt to perform as a router. But these are priced much lower.
These do work really well with wired backbone. When testing these units, I did have some devices (Apple and Windows 10\11) that would not connect to the closest node, tanking the performance of that device. These units do also make a heck of a lot of calls to chinese servers, like thousands per day. Packets seem innocent enough though. Firmware updates are extremely rare.
In all the TP-Link units tested, have not had that issue.

Other point, with this system I required all 4 nodes in my house. When I tested 2 TP-Link mesh systems M5 and x20, only 2 nodes were required for the same coverage, despite the MW6 claiming much better coverage. They sell quite well on facebook marketplace, so if you don't require all 4 nodes they should be easy to offload.

  • i am interested if someone only needs 3 nodes

  • If you're only after 3, you can get the 3 pack from Amazon for $119 delivered next day
