REX: Full Service: ADL ↔ MEL $50, SYD ↔ MEL $65, SYD ↔ GC $75, SYD ↔ BNE $83, MEL ↔ CBR $85 @ Beat That Flight

981

Rex is a full service (checked luggage, carry on luggage, refreshments) airline, flying mostly 737-800NGs on these routes (Ex Virgin planes).

They're running a promo where their midweek fares are less, so I've gone through the next 3 months to find the cheapest flights on all their routes. Hopefully it helps someone!

On some of the dates, Jetstar or Virgin may show up cheaper if applicable (eg $40 on way on some of the routes with Jetstar), but Rex does include checked luggage and refreshments, while Jetstar and usually Virgin now charge for checked luggage. All include carry-on luggage.

There are hotels on sale as well, don't forget to book yours.

  • Ex Virgin planes

Why didn't they want to use them anymore?

    • +20

Virgin went through an insolvency process, cut back on a LOT of their services and routes, particularly internationally (they're only starting to fly to NZ again in November, and only to Queenstown for example). So they had planes sitting around. They could get money for them, so I guess it made sense. If/when Virgin expands again they could conceivably offer to buy back (maybe it's part of their agreement) or buy newer more efficient planes.

      tldlr: business decision

      • +8

Virgin didn't own many of their aircraft. The leasing company took them back and leased them to Rex when Virgin went insolvent.

        • Most airlines don't own many of their own aircraft, including Qantas, it makes much more sense financially to lease them.

      • -6

The aircraft REX acquired were the least reliable and most problematic Virgin aircraft

        • +3

          Source?

          • +5

@samfisher5986: Tuttle's own thoughts - who needs to back up with sources or facts, like a lot of posts on here these days

          • -2

@samfisher5986: Engineer mate at Virgin. Google their rego history and look at their age compared to all the remaining Virgin jets.
They were the oldest and most problematic.
A bunch of negs doesn't change facts

            • +1

@Tuttle: Why not link the ages and history rather then "just google"

              • @samfisher5986: Ok: https://www.airfleets.net/ageflotte/REX%20Regional%20Express…

Rex's 737 average age: 14.1 years, total fleet age: 26.1 years.

That's old no matter who you compare it to..

                • @Tuttle:

That's old no matter who you compare it to..

If you're talking comparatively then it's not particularly old according to airfleets.net:-

On 277 airlines operating this type of aircraft REX Regional Express ranks 167

Meaning almost 40% of the 277 airlines have a higher average fleet age for the B737 than Rex.

For the Saab 340 Rex ranks more favourably at 13 out of 38, despite the average fleet age of 27.8 years.

            • @Tuttle:

Google their rego history and look at their age compared to all the remaining Virgin jets.

According to airfleets.net, Rex has six active B737s (all ex-Virgin):-

              • VH-RYU = 19 years
              • VH-RQC = 18.9 years
              • VH-RQG = 17.3 years
              • VH-REX = 12.4 years
              • VH-PAG = 12.3 years
              • VH-RQP = 12.1 years

Airfleets.net lists 78 active B737s for Virgin Australia, including:-

              • VH-VOK = 19.1 years
              • VH-VOL = 19 years
              • VH-VON = 19 years
              • VH-VOO = 19 years
              • VH-VOQ = 18.9 years
              • VH-VUE = 17.4 years

And then there are several VA B737s that are younger than VH-RQG but older than VH-REX.

        • Information based on?

          • @vinnycol: Someone already asked that above

        • -1

Perhaps the Virgin engineers didn't have the skill and knowledge to deal with the problematic aircraft.

    • +10

      They were no longer virgins

  • no sale on MEL-OOL or OOL-MEL?

  • +1

Is there nothing BNE-MEL? Was looking at end of September but prices are absolutely cooked atm :(

    • +1

Yes, but not with Rex, that's not one of their routes (https://www.rex.com.au/flightinfo/img/Regional_VIC_TAS.jpg?i…). I've listed all their routes above.

Let me run a search for you for September/October though, might find something with another airline.

      • That is very odd. I just went to search for BNE-MEL in Dec on your site and Rex comes up with direct flights. Not sure if it's an error or not now.

        • Can you link? I'm curious too. Maybe REX just hasn't updated their route maps.

          (checks)

Yep! ZL281 is a valid REX flight between the two. Slackers need to update their site :)

    • +1

That's Qld school holidays. Of course fares are high due to demand.

      • Eh, it’s also school holidays for other states which are part of this sale and much cheaper in general. Seems like more of an availability issue to me

  • Virgin does not normally charge for luggage.

Their standard fare is Choice and includes checked-in luggage, only the newish (Jetstar like fare class) "Lite" fare, which is for those travelling light, doesn't, a lot of the time there is only a few bucks between the 2, particularly if you are using the discount codes for 10% off Choice is booked 21 days in advance.

    • +2

Possibly, but their weekly Thursday 'happy hour' sales are predominately Lite fare :/

      • Don't forget the Virgin Discount Code ITX13 for 5% to 10% off Choice & Bus Class fares booked 21 days in advance for flights within the next 330 days in advance + Cash Rewards.
No need to wait for Happy Hour and sometimes this works out cheaper.
Happy Hour discounts on Lite fares aren't that great usually.
Rex also charges a 1% "online booking fee" (in addition to the 1% card charge) and no way to avoid this unless you book at their airport desk (adding another 2% to the advertised price).
Given they only have 6 planes in operation (soon to be 7), if your flight is cancelled, you'll also have a very long wait for the next flight (only a lounge in Melb, Syd and Adel if this applies to you)
In saying this, I'm glad Rex exists, competition is good for all :)

    • New?

I'm pretty sure they have had lite fares for a long time.

      • New-ish, being late Aug 2021, under the new VA2, a little under 12 months old.
        https://www.virgin.com/about-virgin/latest/virgin-australia-…

        • Strange, I swear you could book without baggage prior to 2021 for domestic flights…

          • @samfisher5986: Not "Light" fares, they never had a fare class that didn't include baggage until then, which is aimed at Jetstar customers given they closed down TigerAir.
The old fare classes were called Getaway, Elevate or Freedom, Business and Business Saver, all of which included luggage.
New fare classes are Lite (new no luggage ticket), Choice (replaces Getaway), Flex (replaces Freedom) and Business.

            • @SimAus007:

they never had a fare class that didn't include baggage

Incorrect, VA previously had Saver Lite fares which didn't include checked bags.

There are still a couple of references to Saver Lite fares on the VA website. For example:-

Checked baggage allowance is not included in Saver Lite fares. If checked baggage allowance is required customers can purchase a baggage inclusive fare (Saver or Flexi fares), pre-purchase a checked baggage allowance online for $55 for the first piece or purchase excess baggage at the airport for $80 for the first piece.

              • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Interesting, I'd never heard of that fare class and couldn't find it with a Google search. Happy to be corrected.

I wonder when they were removed, possibly when they acquired TigerAir?

                • @SimAus007: That's certainly pausible as VA completed the buyout of Tiger (for $1) in late 2014, and the Saver Lite fares were removed domestically in early 2015.

Some short-haul international fares continued to have options with no checked baggage beyond 2015.

              • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Thanks for this, I thought I was crazy!

  • If you happen to notice any cheap flights to Perth from Canberra or Sydney in January please post 🙏

  • With REX I've tried flying with them 4 times, 3 times they moved the flight time by more than 4 hours.

So be aware of using them for time sensitive reasons. The actual service and flight was fine.

    • +5

That still sounds better than Qantas.

Qantas = dog based on my recent experiences. And not in a good way.

    Anyone's experiences on Mytrip.com?
    Reviews don't look so flash…

    • +3

None of the OTAs reviews look great, but I've used mytrip with no issues.
      My experience/explanation:
People book a flight with them, flight goes well, they forget mytrip and remember 'flying with Rex/Qantas etc'
People book a flight with them, need to change something, have to deal with an email support or change fees and then it's all "argh this is a scam!!1!!"

They are cheap, but make money when people make changes, or add on insurance etc. Navigate them carefully and it's usually fine.

  • +8

I've flown Rex a number of times between Brisbane and Melbourne.
Never been delayed by over 30 minutes.
Free bike/ski's etc as part of your baggage allowance.
I think they are a great service.

Agree, had really positive experiences with Rex Bne to Mel, definitely airline of choice now

  • Any sydney to adelaide deals or?

    • Do Rex even fly SYD-ADL direct?

      • +1

they do! I'll try and post shortly

  • Any rural flights ex Sydney? (Like what Rex's original business is? Rex is killing some of the services in country towns.)

Any deals for flights from Albury?

Kids keep getting upset that I get to jump on planes for work. Would love to take them on a cheap flight to Melb or Syd

BTW, LOVE Rex! Such a stark difference from Qantas (who have massively cut back their flights from Albury)

  • full service to all virgins

  • Any sales from sydney to hobart in october? 🫣

  • Hey the link isn't working to see full post. Anything from Adelaide to Melbourne?

    • hmm, that's really weird, looks like my site server is down but my booking links still work. You can still search for the dates you want but I'll try and fix the site, so you can check back later and it should be up

      • Cool, thanks. Is there a way to check flight prices that have changed? For example a specific flight from jetstar was like $59 last week but is not $79. Is there a way to check the price increases over time for certain flights.

        • not really sorry. Prices change all the time, sometimes up, sometimes down, or sales occur for a few days and that can change it again. Some people theorise Tuesday is the cheapest day to search, but Jetstar for example has their sales on Fridays or weekends, most often.

  • How safe is it to book through au.mytrip ?

    • Flown Rex several times now on their B737's. I have nothing but good things to say about them. I absolutely hate the Melbourne T4 terminal though.

      • I absolutely hate the Melbourne T4 terminal though

Lol, just wait until you go to Brisbane and "experience" (if that's the right word) one of what they call as a terminal. Good God that was a doghouse if I've ever seen one.

Right of the bat they make you walk out of the airplane and towards some building with Jimbo outside the plane wearing high vis and yelling at you something like "go straight, and sharp left at the dunny". Just pretend like there's no thunderstorm and keep walking.

Baggage took 35 minutes and then waited nearly another 40 minutes for a taxi (6 people in total, 6 taxis arrived in 40 minutes). This was 9pm on a weekday.

They are soon going to host the Olympics, which I thought they're woefully unprepared for.

I've started appreciating any fricking terminal in Melbourne after that experience. Hell, the service at various terminals in Indonesia, Vietnam, India, and even Myanmar were far better in comparison.

Pretty sure I'm going to pull on some nerves here with this post but it's what it is. I know it's sunny and all in Brisbane and Moroocarodye or whatever it is, but I'd rather put on a jumper and be in Melbourne instead if I were given a choice. It's my personal opinion purely based on my experiences though.

        • Whoa

        • I love that much of the world views Australians as being "tough"!

          • @callum9999: Australians are tough has nothing to do with an "international airport" being complete dog 💩

Australians are so tough they should drag their guts across the desert floor instead of expecting to fly. Yeah, no champ.

Is there a reason I get this message quite often when checking out "Unfortunately, your ticket is no longer available at the selected price. The price has changed to XXXX". Obviously you dont operate these sites but im just wondering if these sites purposely show low prices to lure you in then change it at checkout.

    • Nope, just happens. Prices change ALL the time, you almost always don't pay the same as the person next to you. They can't store live data for each and every flight, so most providers cache values recently searched. However a sale could have just started, or tickets were bought in a particular class, and the prices change accordingly.

  • Any cheap Melbourne to Brisbane ??

    • Yes, but ozb has asked me to stop posting tables of links in the comments - so feel free ot go to the site and try the dates you are after, it'll show you the cheapest flights :)

  • Not sure why the website diverted me to smartfare when placing order but then it seems fishy from there:
    1. the order was processed using USD other than a local AUD based payment gateway
    2. no ticket number after placing the order
2.1 the sales rep said the ticket fare fluctuated and changed now they can't issue us the ticket for the previous quoted price
2.2 the sales rep asked for another 700ish dollars to issue the ticket
2.3 but if we search the same flight on the website, it still shows the original price
    3. even though we have purchased the cancellation insurance from the site when placing order, the sales rep still said we won't get full amount back. It requires cancellation fee, handling fee, etc which is more than 100 dollars.

    • Note that Beat That Flight is an aggregation engine. We find the cheapest prices provided by other Online Travel Agencies. So the links are labelled - mytrip, gotogate, smartfare, etc etc.

I booked one last week that went through Flight Network - the ticket took about 6 hours to come through which stressed me a bit, but it did turn up.

Fares are almost always cached as prices change all the time, so sometimes when you click through they'll have changed their prices - sometimes hourly. It's the nature of air travel prices :/

Fair enough, your explanation is reasonable for half of 2.1. And 2.2 and 2.3 still makes no sense. If the price changes, why it didn't update on the website? Even if the price is changed, as a contractual consumer we have the choice of rejecting the new price and get my paid money back other than being force to paid another 700 to get the ticket or charged 100 dollar to get the original paid money back.

There has been multiple reports smartfare is a scam, e.g.: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g1-i10702-k11132793…

You can keep running business with them and kick the ball when problem happens. But you are the agent that runs business locally still need to follow the Australia consumer law.

        Downvote one from me.

        • Sucks that you experienced that, but to negate the scam argument, you'd only need one person to use it successfully, and I've certainly used them before, as have people on the review sites :/

Nobody's "kicking the ball", I was just pointing out the 2.1 stuff. The 2.2/2.3 - price changes often on the GDS (Amadeus/Sabre) and they won't necessarily poll the GDS for every possible flight combination (millions!) every minute. So usually they have to poll when someone asks for a flight and update if need be. Getting exactly accurate flight prices is a horrendously difficult software problem (MIT has a white paper on the topic if curious: http://www.ai.mit.edu/courses/6.034f/psets/ps1/airtravel.pdf).
I'd absolutely be demanding my money back from them, or ask them to explain the same price. Most sites update the 'new' price before you pay, haven't had that happen to me before :/

    • FYI, scam pretty much the same way every time.
