how about a Telstra locked LG Optimus Spirit (gingerbread) under $50 via flybuys offer. iinet can do $20 a month with 1.5GB of 3G (non telstra network). tpg does similar on optus network. setup costs etc etc.

Have you considered going with a prepaid contract? (Obviously, it would be BYO phone).
