Just looking for a phone 5.5 inches and under with NFC. Currently have a Pixel 3 which is perfect but the battery life is terrible even with a new battery unfortunately.
Any recommendations? Preferably under $300, happy to buy used.

Check gsm arena there is a search page where you can filter to any features you can think of.
Then search on ozbargain. Or just straight to ebay for second hand.

any (first/second hand) phone with Snapdragon 865/870 is good. IMO the size is a harder requirement than price.
Maybe start off from here and cross reference with BangGood/AliExpress/Kogan
For the sake of performance longevity, try to buy the model with the largest RAM capacity.

i phone SE 2016 will work fine, i use it and it can do everything you throw at it.

OP didnt state they want an android handset, although they do use a pixel due to the size.
@tomclancy: there you go. well i dont think android handsets have a good performance rating when in small forma factors these days…..
the only 2 that come to mind are unihertz jelly/ titan/ jelly 2 or the palm phone (sim card version)
Try checking out the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3, 4 or 5.
