Is My Optus nbn Modem-Router (Sagecom F@St 5366 TN) Compatible with Other nbn Retailers?

Hello everyone :)

I am currently with Optus for more than 4 years now. The internet speed and the customer service is pathetic but since its a FTTN connection, we are forced to stay with Optus worried we will have to spend another $200ish for another modem if we switch.

I was told by someone, we can use the same Optus modem we have and reconfigure it to use with any other NBN retailer. Could someone confirm if that's correct and anyone has done it? Also, how to do it and is it really complex?
We would be more than happy to switch to Aussie Broadband or someone who is reliable, offer more speed tiers for a much cheaper price.

  • I have seen posts in the past that you can use it as a Router/Modem. But from memory you cannot use it for VOIP.

Be aware that it's wireless sucks and it has a number of bugs kept popping up on the Optus forums were around a few years ago (Optus closed them down IMHO to stop people seeing that other people had the same issues). You may find that depending on the speed it may not handle the very high speed very well.

    • I only want it for modem (no VOIP) as I have Nest WiFi plugged into it as use it as a mesh router. Some say you can but some posts say you can't. Very mixed reviews and I am very confused. Don't want to switch and then realise you can't and have to end up spending for a new modem.

Some mention logging into the modem admin portal and just changing the username and password, some say it's plug and play, so just factory reset and plug it in and it will configure automatically and some mention something in line of changing DHCP to automatic (I have no idea what that is). -_-

  • You will need to reset the settings on the router, then go through the portal with the support of the new provider and get the information you need to specify within the router.

It doesnt sound like you have the knowledge needed to do this, so you will have great difficulty. Most people you talk to for support will probably fob you off unless you know exactly what you are doing.

    • That's why I thought the ozbargainers will come to my rescue when needed :(

I am looking at plans from Aussie Broadband and AGL (as they offer $25 off per month as we have electricity plans with them).

      • Maybe call them up and explain the situation before signing up, i have found aussie broadband to be pretty good support, depends on who you get i guess.

SL uses IPoE. So provided your router supports this then no issues at all. All you will need to do is reboot your nbn modem and your router and it should work automatically. But also depends on what sort of NBN you have… FTTN/FTTC/HFC etc… i have used FTTC and now on HFC so thats all i need to do to get my internet working for IPoE.

  • Hello, I successfully used this router with another NBN provider.
You may need access to advanced configuration options, this page shows how (I did but Idk if I had to):
    https://github.com/mattimustang/optus-sagemcom-fast-3864-hac…
    TL;DR I bookmarked this link: http://admin:0ptU%[email protected]/main.html

This is a bad router and it should feel bad. It started having issues connecting to NBN 2 months into the new service.
I picked up a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 for free off Fb Marketplace and it was a huge upgrade.

    • @buttstuff does "Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2" is configurable out-of-the-box?
      or
Should we enable any scripts or download any extra stuff?

btw, I am trying to setup Dodo FTTB internet. I do have setting provided for PPPoE with login settings.
I am trying to use "Sagecom F@St 5366 TN" but so far Internet light just stays "red" even after all settings.

I hope you've already gotten this sorted!
        If not:
Check nbn black box is on and has all the green lights. Call Dodo if not.
Try factory reset and restarting everything. Try logging into the advanced config like in the above link.
I don't know any details about what you have to change or if you even have to change anything at all.
If you're still stuck you gotta call Dodo for help.
        Good luck!

  • Hey OP, I have a Sagecom from Optus as well. Ported to Aussiebb fine. Switched to More and was asked to config the network. That's when I was told the modem is network-locked. So either buy a new modem or go back to Aussiebb.
