  • is trackball good for moba?

    • +4

Heck, I use mine for FPSs. I wouldn't jump straight in until you learn how to accurately use it, takes a little bit to get used to, but yeah, they're pretty good for gaming once you know how to use it.

That said, I don't know how one like this would go, since you usually have to take your hand off the ball to click the buttons or scroll. But if you use a thumb trackball like the logitech ones where you're always on the buttons and have a traditional Left/scrollwheel/Right layout, they're great.

I think the primary application for trackballs is microsoft paint

      • you are better off with a drawing tablet?

        • +1

          nobody said trackballs were good

Man, I got me an Logitech trackball and it changed my life.

So much easier to do stuff, don't need to clear a space on the table to comfortably use it. I can use it in bed or resting on my thigh no problem. I would recommend going wireless though, if you're planning on using a trackball with a laptop.

      Hi

Just wondering which trackball from logitech you got?

      • MX ergo, I believe

      • +1

The MX Ergo. It's Bluetooth/2.4ghz wireless. Works really well, has a variable angle for either traditional mouse grip or a slightly elevated side-grip

I really hope they bring out a version with USB-C and the magnetic lock scroll wheel, I really miss having that from my MX Master, being able to speed scroll through pages and documents is hella useful, and so is having a separate horizontal scroll wheel. Apart from that I have no real gripes.

    • My biggest problem was the reliability of the old M570s. Went through 3 of them (all lasted 2-3 years).

Finally went back to the ergo recently, absolutely love it but I'm worried how long it'll last again. Hopefully a while, there was a point where the M570 was regularly $30-40 so I didn't mind the price so much, I always seem to miss out on the good Ergo deals (got mine at $85 which seemed ok).

My MX Ergo has survived for 4 years FYI. I do swap them with my elecom huge and trackpad (better for my RSI if i change it up every few months).

      • Same here. My pre-USB model lasted soooo long, but the following models have been much more fragile.

Another vote here for the MX ergo.

15 years using M570s and now Ergos.

Originally switched to trackballs due to tendon / wrist issues, which have never recurred.

Used to replace my M570 every 2-3 years (which isn't that bad, from what I've heard). I'll see how the Ergo fares. Had this one about a year now. So far so good.

Might spring for a https://ploopy.co/ kit when I have some free time. Reviews look good but seems like a lot of work to get just right.

It's a shame there really aren't affordable trackball options to compete with the 12 cent plastic crap mouse everybody gets for free in their cocoa pops. It's an OHS issue for me - my computer is my tool of trade and I'm fortunate to be able to invest in decent gear that doesn't actively damage my body.

      Look after your hands, folks.

      • I've been using my Ergo since 2019, still going strong.

      • Oof, 200-300 dollars and they can't even be bothered to use a resin 3D printer…

        • Their shop is CAD not USD so it's not quite that bad, but yep, still no bargains. It's low volume, so I get, but I'm still lamenting the lack of affordable options.

The thumb trackball kit at CAD$160 compares reasonably with the Ergo RRP, though.

I actually was looking at the Nano Trackball. That thing is adorable.

  • I've user the Logitech marble mouse trackball for 20 years+. Completely eliminated any wrist/arm soreness.
Takes about a day and a half to get used to it.

Is the wireless version worth the extra $27?

    • +3

Yes if you are connecting it to a laptop. It uses both proprietary 2.4GHz and Bluetooth, which means you don't need to use the receiver with a BT enabled computer.

    • +3

Definitely. Opens up a whole new range of usage. They're basically perfect for couch surfing, since you don't need a flat surface to use your mouse on.

    • +1

I was pretty disappointed with it. For the price it feels pretty cheap. The ball doesn't move as smoothly as I expected. And the software overrides default mouse settings for other mice. The only thing I liked was the scroll ring. Go with the mx ergo, way better, unless you have a specific ergo reason for selecting differently.

      • I'm using a mx ergo at the moment.
My only complaint with logitech trackballs are their buttons, they seem to fail before anything else so just want to get this as a spare while the price is good.

      • You need to nose lube your ball if it is not smooth. Makes a huge difference.

        • +1

Do you use your own snot to do that ? It's not a technique I'm familiar with.

    • +1

Btw I used the wired one for a few years and upgraded to the wireless one. Now I have 2 wireless ones at both home and work computers. Easier to manage and move around. I would say a no brainer for just $27.

      • +1

        $27? Link plesse

        • 27 extra I mean

    • Wired for me. Less prone to lag and connectivity issues. I don't need to move it around and don't have to worry about batteries. Wireless has its appeal but for me, I could use that extra $27 somewhere else (edit: wireless is back up to $76 difference now so non-issue)

  • Also check out Kensington Orbit. The scroll ring is excellent. I prefer this one. The after sales support by Kensington is excellent too.

  • I'm still rocking the holy grail of trackballs, the Microsoft Trackball Explorer. I can't believe how much these go for second hand now!

    • +1

Thought the holy grail is Logi MX Ergo?

Altho I do prefer the ball being index and middle finger operated, not the thumb.

      This looks amazing

I do prefer the ball being index and middle finger operated, not the thumb.

        That's what she said? :P

    • I wish Lenovo would make a wireless version of it's trackpoint, that would be amazing.

  • The link for wireless goes to a full price listing. Is there another place with the supposed sale price?

    • I wouldn't put it past Amazon their algorithm goes 'oh, so many people looking at this product, let's auto jack the price'…

      • +1

Looks like Amazon AU is sold out and options are for higher priced third-party sellers or Amazon US.

  • This was great for use with Mame.

  • The Slim Blade is superior to this one IMO. I had both and this one felt less smooth, and the ring was scratchy

  • This or gameball?
