Is My Paint Meant to Look Like This?

Just bought 2x15L tubs of Wattyl paint from the latest paint mate deal.

Delivered a couple of days ago, and I've left it sitting in the garage (cool, dark, dry) and haven't touched it or moved it since. All up about 48-72 hours. I opened it up today and it looked like this:

The tamper seal is no longer on - I'm assuming it's because they had to remove it to tint the colour to a different white from the base. And the cap was fitted on tightly and correctly (I think). It didn't smell rancid or sour, and smelled like normal paint otherwise.

Is the paint meant to separate this quickly? Did I get a bad batch? How would I rectify this if not?

    Yes.

    The paint materials have separated.

You need to stir it for a good 5-10 minutes.

Thank you. I didn't think it would separate that quickly. Glad to hear it from MS Paint.

Might not have been mixed properly after the colour was added.

A video for stirring technique. Make sure you use a flat paddle.

I’d imagine something that was mixed/tinted quite recently wouldn’t present like this - but maybe I’m misrepresenting what sold paint should be like.

Is this something that should happen within a few days or months? Just a little annoying that newly bought paint requires further mixing and prepping (unless of course this is the norm and I’m just being unreasonable, then also let me know).

@Jaystea: They didn't leave it in the shaker long enough or at all most likely, paint won't separate like that in a couple of days. FWIW you always need to mix paint unless you're going straight home and applying it after having it tinted and mixed at the store.

@Jaystea: Paint should always be thoroughly stirred before use and during use if you are taking your time.

Yes as it's water based paint that was made probably 6 or 12 months ago and just needs a good stir.

You're meant to stir it before using it.

    • That would also require OP reading the instructions for use.

Instead they thought it was quicker to complain on OzB

Looks Shaken, not stirred, unfortunately not the technique for this cocktail.

    • 007 would accept it

Should have used the paint shaker at the hardware store https://youtu.be/K9Cy2gvfmsQ?t=63

Yes sometimes it does, no and stir/mix it to fix.

Completely. If it hasn’t been tinted and mixed at the shop there’s a good chance it has been settling for ages. It’s be unusual for it to settle that much in a couple of days if it’s had a thorough mix when purchased.

    Thanks for your replies.

Exactly as I’ve told the buyer. Just needs a mix and good to go!
