  • The deal is good & I'm trying to buy it, but the price lists as $699 once you click on it, not $499. I hope this is a real deal & not just another ht error that either doesn't really exist or that they don't honor. It was meant to be available from 12:01am today, so I'll see if its there in the morning.

    • as per your request, HT updated the price for their 2 day promotion, price is now showing $499.

  • Great deal, cheapest on static ice is $635.88. Was going to get the wd my world 2tb but i think this will do quite well :)

  • I was seriously considering this but a Google search ended up with me getting VERY cautious about dropping $500 on this device

Form your own opinions - http://www.gurtle.com/ppov/2008/04/12/dont-buy-maxtor-shared… and check out the references to Amazon,Seagate community, etc.

Also take a look at http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=mss&thr…

Not for this little bear :) Seems there is a reason that the price is so low.

BTW - I would be very happy if a few people could show the above material is out of date rubbish - I would love to be able to have !SAFE! storage at this price with good functionality.

    • I've had the 1TB model for some time (6-12 months) and haven't had any issues with it. I'm certain that, like any storage product, disks will fail for some people - that is why the RAID functionality is there. I've really got no tolerance for people who blame disk manufacturers for the loss of their data (as in the first link you provide) when there is a failure.

Overall I've been happy with the Maxtor Shared Storage II and would recommend it - and at this price I would definitely recommend it.

  • It's pretty tough to judge budget NAS out there to be your ultimate backup solution. As these are affected by so many factors, LAN/Wifi stability and speed, power supplying to the NAS (if they are joint up with many other devices, I know 2 separate cases where HDD are not supplied with enough Amp where the drives die) , your router's compatibility all has have to taken into account.

I have had a premium SanDisk Cruzer Titanium drives which died twice, come on "crush-resistant" body but flash memory die inside, it has good warrantee and i have that replaced but obviously all the data was lost. living in the digital age, I believe certain risks are just part of live. I cannot speak for the Maxtor NAS here as I have no personal experience with it but at least I wouldn't say SanDisk made rubbish products based on the 2 failures with the same stick.
