Which wireless ADSL2+ modem? $70-$100

Hi,

you may remember me as i recently asked which broadband deal was suitable for me (i went with tpg adsl2+ unlimited bundle:P)

I have done some research and found out that the provided modem is not very good and decided to buy my own. BUT i dont know what to choose.

Can you guys help me (i have looked on wp, but they recommend ~$150 models)? My max price is $70-$100

The modem just has to work, not drop out and has fast downloads. I download alot of dramas through torrents if that helps.

I`ve got the highly rated TP-Link TD-W8960N Wireless N ADSL Modem Router which you can buy new on ebay for around the $60-$70 including postage.

    .

    • Been with TPG and am on my second TP-Link modem as they work great with my local TPG exchange . Only on my second because I wanted faster wireless . I've previously had billions , Drayteks (good but rediculously expensive ) , Belkin(utter crap) , D-link and netgear . IMHO TP-Link are the best value for money home network devices .

Billion modems/routers are made to be reliable. It's been recommended here
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54243 and on whirlpool
I would recommend the 7700N from MSY. $59

TP link TD-W8960N or Billion 7300n, 7700n / 7800n are all great choices.

The 7800n is probably overkill for most, but it has gigabit LAN. You might want the 7800N if you have attached storage like a NAS or a media center PC attached via Ethernet.

As for the 7300n Versus the 7700n, the 7700n is reportedly better at managing long distance lines than the 7300n. While the 7300n has a more robust Billion operating system, it's Trendchip branded chipset doesn't cope as well for noisier or weaker lines. (Reference: Whirlpool)

The 7800n, 7700n and the TP Link all use Broadcom chipsets, which perform well at any distance.

    • You're right about that, my 7300N was horrible because of my noisy line. Replaced it with a TP-Link TD-8810 (which uses a Broadcom chip) and Asus RT-N13U and have no problems since. I only bought them separately because I already had the Asus.

  • ohh i'll probally get the billion one then BUT is this any good? I found it on sale at jb hi fi for $50 (cheapest online was $79)?
    its called DSL-2740B WIRELESS N 300 ADSL2+ MODEM ROUTER

    http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=784

*i prefer going to an actual store than buying online as i'm only 16 :D

Funny you should be buying that one….its what just died on me after a few years of good service, its an average modem (not the best but stable) make sure you update the firmware to version: AUS 4.15 as it improved things no end.

If you do get this and need a hand drop me a pm.

Edit: the wireless range is quite poor but that depends on where you live\modem location ect.

2nd edit: check to see if you live near to any of the http://www.msy.com.au/ stores if you want to buy in person and still want a good modem.

    • Go to MSY and buy the TP link. Most stores have this in stock.
