Lawn Mower Recommendation for Vacant Land over 600 square meters

Hello everyone. I have a vacant no housed 610 meters square land and 30m2 nature strip and I need to buy a new mower. Something durable, long lasting, able to help me mow the whole time without stoppage, and replacement parts easily available. I bought 2 old used petrol mowers and lots of cash has been spent on servicing and repairs for start up problems or mowers stopping midway. With this land of this size, I would believe I need a petrol mower but some commented that battery power might suit me better. Hoping someone can convince me that batteries mowers are powerful still after 5 years of use to quell my battery myths and fears. What mowers you guys recommend and anything else I should consider (like maintenance) and other recommendations?

I was thinking of getting a used just out of warranty Honda hrn216pku push mower, but as mentioned feel free to convince me otherwise.

Thanks everyone

Check out the EGO range 56V.

    • sell me about batteries because for me i think batteries don't last long over the years. oof 40 mins.hmm it takes me 1hr30 to 2hrs for me to cut down my lawn. Which 56v model are you referring to?

    • Victa lawn mower which now come with Briggs and Stratton 4 stroke engine
They are sold everywhere, reasonably priced and Parts everywhere and reasonably cheap

For those that dont know Briggs and Stratton now owns Victa which is why they no longer make thier classic 2 stroke lawn mowers

Honda lawn mowers are the preferred brand by the lawn mowing industry but very expensive and really overkill for what OP requires

      • i thought 2 strokers are just illegal now. So it is either honda, victa or ego. hmm

        • There’s plenty of other brands around.

For this usage I’d be buying/finding a cheap worn out mower and throw it away once there is a real lawn to mow.

          • @Euphemistic: Doesnt answer OPs question and address the qualifications

But I tend to agree with you
Id just grab a 2nd hand mower
The old ones are much better

Plenty of good ones on the market as people switch to battery/cordless

  • I had 800 sqm block used to do it on one charge on my ego mower.

Albeit if you're not a regular mower the petrol do have more grunt, but i liked mowing once a week in summer so was taking 15-25mm off and had no issues its great. No repair bills like i had with my petrol every few years and surprisingly I used to get bit of headache from petrol fumes noticed that disappeared when i went to battery mower/blower/trimmer combo

    • Which 56v ego mower model? There are so many in the market

      • +2

You would need the 52cm mower and a couple 5.0Ah batteries. They also have 7.5Ah.

        • think might only apply to the usa but are ego batteries hard to find and replace? seen some on youtube stating they are hard to find

    a goat, or several goats

happy for you to buy some and maintain them for me as a goodwill gesture and i'll pay ya back with exposure

By the time you build a house and landscape you'll probably have ~250sqm of actual lawn which is similar to mine (710sqm block). I've been doing mine for years with a Ryobi 18v. Almost everyone will tell you beyond any question that the Ryobi can't do blocks that size, can't do tall grass, can't do thick grass, can't do this, can't do that yet I've done it all with no issue. Would more power hurt? Absolutely not but it does the job fine. Moved all the garden tools to the same battery platform, line trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer, pole saw/pruner. No more fuel/mixing, no more servicing, no more noise and fumes, starts every time etc etc.

If you're not planning to build then yes, petrol might be the better option unless you want to get on to a battery platform for more tools later on.

    • eventually i will build, in a few years time or if i win the lottery or i have enough to actually extend my home loan. been a long race

      • An option you may not have considered then is to simply hire someone to knock it down every couple of months in the growing season. If you're not living there then you not only need to travel to and from but transport your mower and fuel etc. The fact you don't already have a mower tells me you likely live somewhere without a lawn so an apartment etc so where are you going to store the mower? Might work out better for you to just pay to have it done for now.

        • i live in a home with family 15 min drive away if you factor in traffic. i store my 2 old petrol mowers in a garage. my home only has a front yard lawn next to the curb, no backyard lawn. but yeah my 610sq m land + the extra front lawn has to be done.

          • @RQNinja: All good then. I still wouldn't spend too much just yet, especially if you're interested in battery. Technology and models change frequently, Get something that can just knock it all down from time to time until you actually build and move in.

            • @apsilon: thing about petrol mowers is that i am super horrible when it comes to maintenance. i dont know how you guys do it

              • @RQNinja: I suspect most don’t really maintain their mower as long as it runs properly.

                • @Euphemistic: i live with people are like that. i hope to get a mower and when i eventually build house, keep the mower so i can maintain it. for now it's sort of out of my hands and it is a bit hard.

Get a Honda commercial mower e.g. HRU196/HRU216, will run for 20+ years without issue

I have a Stihl RMA 510V also, cut quality nowhere near as good, build quality poor (made in China) and utterly useless for longer grass. Fine for small yards if you maintain it every 3-4 weeks, but I much prefer petrol mowers for now.

    • any better deals for
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/honda-21-push-mower_p0167627

i know nothing about petrol mower requires tbh. or i have the knowledge to make it worse even from youtube videos

    • just asking your thoughts. is a HRU194 mower (around 30 years of age it is reaching that model) used from ebay worth the 150$ price tag?

      • If it runs well then yes absolutely. The HRU194 is a classic, very well made and for $150 a lot better than the absolute junk you find in Bunnings these days for double or triple the cost.

Given you only need to keep it relatively tidy and not pristine I wouldn’t bother getting anything flash. There’s a fair difference between something to knock down the tall stuff and something to keep the lawn neat. If you buy a decent mower now you’ll end up trashing it before you get to landscaped lawn stage.

Probably better off getting a mowing company to do it every month to 6 weeks, or even ‘just when it needs it’. It’d probably take someone with a slasher about half and hour to knock it down.

    • what is the usual quote land that size plus extra if i think about front curb as well

    • -1

      someone has already shared that

I think its sad that 600m2 is now considered a HUGE block of land.

    • sorry just huge for the time and physical capability

    • I've seen blocks that are under 250sqm now where ~700 was once the norm.

      • the price of inflated living

  • I have a 25+ year old Victa 2 stroke that lives outside behind the shed in the weather, some Start Ya Bastard and it goes first kick, even after 3+ months in the rain.

I have an EGO mower which sits in the shed, it's ******* useless.

    • sounds true to your name

  • Check my review out on the Bushranger self propelled model, we have had it now almost 18 months & it’s still a treat to use.

    • well it has been said you should never mow over wet grass so. how long did you manage mowing your whole 600sq block and how was the maintenance? i need like close guide for these things

  • +1 for the Honda commercial mower from a specialist dealer, the Bunnings Honda’s don’t look the same to me.
Whatever you get, keep it undercover, clean it after use and maintenance, oil change etc.
If your youngish and fit don’t worry about shit like electric start and self propelled. Just things to go wrong and up the cost.

    • know any good specialist dealers in the west of metro victoria? how do you do maintenance and cleaning parts so well? i struggle to do this and feel like i needed close guidance. i was really learning onto this
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/honda-21-push-mower_p0167627

and someone is selling for 500 ish. he had it for 2 years. think it is worth it? i am really failing maintenance with my 10 year old mowers

  • I thought this was OzBargain

If all you are doing is slashing down some weeds you are overthinking/overspending

A cheap $99 aldi one will do the trick.
Trust me i have one on acreage and use it regularly to clear under the trees and mow lawn and this thing cops a whooping going on 4/5 years. So far its $20-$25 a year and when it stops Ill throw it away and get another

    • one acres on a 99$ aldi. can't tell if you are overexaggerating here haha. how do you do required maintenance on them? are they easy?

      • The aldi mower clears under the bushes and mows the lawn a ride on mower does all the rest
as for servicing still on original blades, spark plug, air filter and i should change the oil lol

        • really? dont have to dig in through that carb or inside that body thing? i seen youtube videos of servicing. i'll be shocked if it is that simple.

  • 15 year old Briggs and Stratford starts 2nd pull every time every couple years clean the air filter if I remember.

    • my lawners have a hard time starting i dont know how you do it. where is a lawnmower i keep linking honda 21 inch. think that is worth it?

  • I doubt your complaints regarding old petrol mower hold true, I had a few from aldi and other no name 2 stroke cheapies to old Honda workhorse and never had issues with them, most get used sparingly and left out in the rains for weeks at time. Like someone said earlier a $200 aldi one or a $900 Honda will be fine, same as the ego. Just need to be patient with most tools

for 500$ had 2 years of use so out of warranty..

      worth it?

      • that doesn't make sense, what's wrong with it or simply can't get it started and said it's broken?

        • oh nah someone is selling a used honda push mower that model for that price. havent bought yet

  • Find a local mens shed and ask if someone is handy with old mowers. I'd be floored if you didnt find some old bloke that finds old mowers and gets them going again as a hobby. You'll end up with a petrol driven mower that runs better than the day it was new, for a fraction of the cost of anything new.

I just about had a heart attack when I saw the cost of a 56v EGO mower I googled just now… I reckon I could repair my mower longer than one of those 56v models would last, and still be ahead.

And anyone that badgers about cost of petrol/etc - literally $20/year. Have used 10L of fuel in the last 12months to mow a total of 400m2 on my block (front & back). That includes mixing 2stroke for the whipper snipper and blower.

    • What do you do to the leftover fuel once you finish mowing? Tip over to side and drain off the fue? I am scared of when you tip the mower to the side, the oil could leak to other components inside the mower according to books I read.

      • Never drained fuel from the mower.. ever. Top up, yes. Not sure why you'd tip the mower so much to spill everywhere? Doesnt need to be that high to clean it.

Oil change occasionally as mine is a 4 stroke, but thats it.

  • out of the box thinking…. zero and you don't have a problem for a few months.

    • and cop a 300$ fine for the council? yeah no thanks I already had my first warning
