What do these sensors do exactly

    • +4

      It's in the 2nd paragraph.

      • -2

yeah, have a few installed at home from when I got the property unsure how to configure them, unsure if same brand though

      • to be fair, they don't say anywhere exactly what this is!

It is a battery-powered PIR sensor, ie passive infra-red (with a Zigbee radio). HTH.

    • It's a battery powered Zigbee Passive Infrared motion sensor. If it detects a warm body moving in its field of vision, it can announce that via the Zigbee radio system.

If you have a home automation system with a Zigbee receiver, you can use these as simple motion detectors for a burglar alarm, or you can use them to turn smart lights etc. on and off as people move through the building.

They've also got a Lux (light) sensor, so they can feed how bright/dark a room is into your system.

      • +3

The lux sensor on these is a bit useless. It only reports when the sensor is triggered, so you are effectively getting a reading after the fact. Which means you can't create any automations based on changes in light level.

Not only that, but even basic routines get needlessly complicated. For example, "don't trigger if the light level is > x" won't work. You need something like "When motion is detected, if the light level is > x then don't do anything".

It gets worse though. The default reset time for the sensor after detecting movement is two minutes - so after it is triggered, the sensor is effectively offline until it resets. There is a simple hardware hack that reduces the reset time to 5 seconds (https://community.smartthings.com/t/making-xiaomi-motion-sen…) but it is still a pain that it needs to be done.

In summary, then. These are cheap and cheerful sensors that work well if your requirements are simple, such as "turn lights on for X minutes when motion is detected". Anything more complex can be done but it is more painful than it needs to be.

        • Oh wow I didn't know that the 2 minute timer could be changed, thanks!

  • -8

It’s not compatible with Philips hue so no point using

    • +1

      Still annoyed about that?

      • Yeah thank you

        • Yeah, I also have Hue, and it works well, though a little expensive. IKEA stuff works with it, with some potential workarounds/pitfalls. But yeah, basically gotta keep in the Hue system.

    • +3

      Conbee and homeassistant.

    • +1

Works fine with my Hue lights via Home Assistant and a Zigbee dongle.

  • Thank you, been waiting for a while. Really good with Home Assistant

I've used these for years and they're great. The only thing I don't like about them is they go to sleep for 1-2 mins after a detection which isn't ideal in some situations. The new Aqara P1 motion sensor is a lot more configurable - you can set the timeout down to 1 second. It uses 2 CR2450 cells to make up for the higher power draw, but if you leave it at the default 30 seconds Aqara says they'll last 5 years.

They cost $39.99 each when not on sale though. If the sleep timeout isn't an issue, the original model works great!

    • I've heard that the P1s are not nearly as reliable though. For most use cases for me (lights) the timeout hasn't been an issue.

      • I've heard that the P1s are not nearly as reliable though

Both of mine have been working great so far. The last comment in that reddit thread mentions the latest version of z2m fixing a lot of the issues.

When I first got the FP1 presence sensor I used it for a few weeks with the Aqara E1 hub and the Aqara app connected to HA as a HomeKit device. With the E1 hub there's an option to "Reset unmanned status". Everything worked flawlessly.

I then moved it to zigbee2mqtt and a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 Plus. It started getting stuck in "home" frequently. The sensor position never moved. So it could be the software that's the issue rather than the device itself.

      • Yeah I regret getting a pair of P1s instead of more of the originals. Can't adjust the sensitivity from inside HA. The options are there, but you change them and they pop back. They definitely have much shorter range than the originals in default setup. If I can work out how to adjust the sensitivity though, maybe via pairing to my xiaomi mi home hub first, then adjust in mi home, then pair back with my sonoff dongle? Will have to carve some time out to muck around to test.

        • +1

The options are there, but you change them and they pop back.

You have to press the button on the P1 right after you change the setting in HA.

          • +1

@eug: Cheers! Someone on the Reddit thread said right before you change the setting though. Easy enough to test, I'll work it out! :)

    • if you need something that accurate wouldnt you just go with a Aqara FP1

      • if you need something that accurate wouldnt you just go with a Aqara FP1

I've got that too. The FP1's response is quite a bit slower than a PIR. The 'enter' event is much quicker than the 'home' event, but it's still slower than a PIR. It's usable in some situations, but I use it in a bathroom and another room where I want the lights to come on the moment I step in, so I use a PIR sensor to turn the lights on and the FP1 to keep them on.

        • Why not use the PIR to also turn off lights when "No Movement is Detected". That way saves the need for the FP1?

          • @Borg:

The problem with PIRs is they're great for detecting motion, but bad at detecting presence. e.g. if you're sitting on a sofa, chair, or toilet and not moving much, a PIR will think there's nobody there and switch the lights off. The FP1 can detect small movements like breathing and keep the lights on.

The FP1 can also detect through glass unlike a PIR, so it can sense someone behind a shower screen.

            • +1

@eug: Ah yes, that's true. I use them in a few places BUT am moving around so it stays active. Useless if soaking in a hot tub and taking a nice long dump :-)

              • +1

@Borg: OR. please tell me you meant OR in that last sentence, not AND.

                • +1

@salem: Why buy an enema kit when you have a huge tub of hot water already there?

                • +1

@salem: Hahaha. I just read my comment. I can't believe I wrote "and" as indeed it was meant to be an "or".
Wonder if it would detect floating motion to keep the lights on!

      • I did the hack when it was paired with my Xiaomi gateway which was connected to HA. Every time it detected motion, the gateway would beep. It looks like the hack puts it in a pairing mode and the gateway just confirms it every time.

It'll probably work fine with the Sonoff zigbee stick I use now though.

        • That's weird. The hack works fine with my Conbee stick. The poor old Xiaomi gateway is probably getting confused.

          • @Astronaut Joe: Yeah, it must be a gateway thing. Has the hack affected your battery life much?

            • @eug: I'm still on the original battery, so if it has affected it then it has gone from "a long time" to "a slightly less long time".

  • Good price, tempted but actually don't really need any more PIR sensors. Would recommend generic Tuya ZigBee ones for those starting out as they use AAA batteries and are therefore dirt cheap to run and last forever before needing a battery change. However based on previous experiences with the Xiaomi ZigBee PIRs, those original batteries last up to 2yrs.

    • Any links / models to recommend, please?

        I have two of these
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/384692829818?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

I think cool down time is long but haven't experienced issues in how I set up my automation

        • Thank you. Conbee II + Home assistant as the core?

          • +1

@joohny: The Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus seems to have replaced the Conbee as the default go-to stick as it's really cheap and has a more modern chipset.

          • @joohny: I use Home Assistant + Sonoff Zigbee USB dongle 3.0 with ZHA. Works well.

I feel like I'm spending a fortune on CR2450 batteries at the moment for all my other Zigbee devices. I buy cheapo no name ones - not sure if it is cheaper or more expensive in the long run hence why I'd strongly advise to go for AAA powered devices.

            • @0 0 0: Exactly AAA had me hooked/enelooped
              :-D

            • -1

@0 0 0: zigbee devices chew through battery like no tomorrow, the worse of all is the smart things motion sensor from Samsung, they used cr2 battery and if mounting them on high traffic area the battery cost will be on pair with the device itself in a year or so. Xiaomi one has quite good battery consumption and some use very cheap 2032 one.

              • @lgacb08: I've got a bunch of Samsung motion sensors. The CR2 batteries seem ok for me. They seem to last so far. If I had to start again I'd just go for the AAA battery sensors or even mains powered for some. I picked up Samsung Vision sensors cheap during the JB clearance so use those as well.

            • @0 0 0:

I used to buy cheap Ikea CR2032 cells, then I realised they really don't last very long compared to brand-name ones. I switched to brand-name ones and they last much longer.

I bought two Aqara motion sensors in late 2018 and Jan 2019. I replaced one CR2450 last year and the second one is still going. They must have come with good quality cells.

        • may not be comparable to these, at least not what the spec says. The aqara also has a built in light sensor which can be used as a condition for when the light should turn on or off. This only gets a reading when motion is detected however.

          • @zorrt: Good point - Lux sensor would be awesome and very useful. I just use time based automations for mine. Haven't worked out the sun-angle thing in Home Assistant. Time based is kinda annoying as the daylight patterns change with seasons and I therefore have to update my automations.

            • @0 0 0:

Haven't worked out the sun-angle thing in Home Assistant.

If you've set your home location in HA's settings, the Sun integration will track sunset and sunrise times automatically. So in your automation you can just specify sunset and sunrise rather than specific times.

              • @eug: From memory when I tried to set it up I couldn't properly do the time offset and my automation wasn't triggering. Will need to take another look. Basically I need my lights to come on an hour earlier than Sunset and stay on probably two hours after sunrise as part of a motion trigger automation.

                • +1

@0 0 0: @julz there's some nuances with Sun that took me some time to understand. "after sunset" is the period from sunset to midnight. And "before sunrise" is midnight to sunrise. And if you want something to trigger at night, you'll need to remember a little high school logic classes. You'll need two conditions separated by an OR not an AND. eg After sunset OR before sunrise. Don't try and use both of the "before" and "after" buttons inside the one sun condition. Then just add your offsets from there.

                  • +1

@salem: Oh thanks! I tried to combine together and it never triggered. Need to update my triggers

            • @0 0 0: If you're using HA then I would recommend getting the aqara light sensor which I find works really well. I've moved away from time based and sunset sometimes ends up being too dark or too light even if I offset the time especially when there's thick cloud coverage eg storms. Light sensors for me I found more consistent.

    • The thing about these is that they are tiny - less than the size of two AAA batteries.

      • Yeah, the size was what drew me to them. They're so tiny and unobstrusive yet have really quick response times. In my bathroom I had one of these battery-powered Xiaomis and a DIY module consisting of a Wemos D1 Mini running Tasmota with the official Wemos PIR shield. The Xiaomi detects motion before the Wemos does.

I'm normally a big fan of NiMH cells but the battery literally lasts years for me so I have no qualms using them.

wow you are getting lots of coupon code named after you. You have been posting lots of deal on aliexpress (although may be the skill you gained was used with hekka), they should issue a coupon code after your username, perhaps in the next black Friday special.

  • +3

any chance of a deal on the zigbee smart plug?

  • Thanks, was looking to pick up some more of these.

  • -5

You want the Chinese knowing your motions???

    • +3

It's ZigBee so not internet connected

      • -5

That's what the CCP want you to believe

    • No biggie, they know how often I vacuum my house too.

  • I added it to cart, it says select version. I click 2pc and it changed the price to 46 aud….

  • Anyone using the M1S hub? I got one via AliExpress and it works fine but the voice prompts are not in English. Any suggestions on where/how to change this?

  • Coupon doesn’t work anymore. Said someone already used the code. :(

  • Same here, Coupon doesn’t work anymore. says, "Oops, someone already snatched this code!"

  • Anyone else had their order cancelled?
Just got a cancellation email, apparently due to no stock… Of course the website is still letting you order them now, but at a higher price!

    • My order also cancelled due to no stock apparently
