  • Does anyone have any experience with these? I'm considering getting one to replace my chromecast

    • +6

I bought the slightly upgraded 3Q a few weeks back for about $340 (8gb ram and 256gb HDD) and have been really impressed.

I'm using it as an always on HTPC (kodi) and torrent seedbox. It is designed to run hot…monitors say between 50-60 celcius so I can't yet vouch for longevity.

It is small. Photos don't do it justice.

It is freakishly quiet. Tiny mechanical noise when you put your ear an inch from it, otherwise nada.

I was slightly concerned by its capabilities as it was initially working thru windows updates but since then it hasn't skipped a beat. Very happy with the purchase. Let me know if you have any questions.

      • maybe cause it's winter season, not sure about in summer.

        • +1

Yeah, I'm in Brissy so that is a factor of which I am mindful. There are aluminium heatsinks on Amazon for about $30 that seem a good fit to mount to the top of it if needed and they appear to work well. There's a vid of a bloke in Georgia (US) testing them out on the Q2 in direct summer sunlight.

Gut says it'll be fine for a few years at least but I'm not sure beyond that. I like things that are built to last. Got 16 years out of my last self built htpc before the heatsink mount perished. Looks comically huge sitting next to the MeLe atm before I decommission it.

I've had one since July last year so it's been through a (NSW) summer. No problems whatsoever, the SOC just runs at 70C instead of 60C in winter. Doesn't throttle at all, and remember CPU's have a max junction temp of about 105C so it's nowhere near the limit.

      • I'd probably 3D print a fanbox for it, so running hot doesn't bother me too much

      • Was that price for the Q3 a special offer? Even with the voucher on offer they are still $400 at the moment.

        • +1

Was during prime day, so maybe. I paid $343.99. Having said that I saw it for about the same price when I wrote a review maybe a week later. Looks like they're trying to move the 2Q atm.

        • 3Q is back down to $340 now, if you're still on the fence.

I'm still v happy with mine. Hasn't skipped a beat.

@whatboutbob: Cheers. Amazon has been informing/notifying/bugging me about the price since I first looked at it. Probably leaning towards just tarting up an old laptop now. My wife informed/notified/bugged me that we didn't need another computer…

    • Yep, I bought the original model a year ago. Performance is pretty good when used as a HTPC/streaming device, plus I installed an old 256GB M.2 drive I had lying around which works perfectly. Note that you have to use Chrome to stream 4k video without dropping frames, Firefox drops frames constantly for some reason.

It's fully passively cooled and while it runs hot to the touch it never seems to throttle, and I've had it running 24/7 for the past year while consuming around 5W at idle and about 10-15W in use. Awesome little device, highly recommend.

how to mount this machine to a monitor in an "elegant" way?

    • Adhesive velcro tape?

    • +2

Just stick it up with some cooked rice

    • You saw it comes with a vesa mount, yeah?

      • does it? did not notice. otherwise, problemm solved.

        • It does. I'm not super convinced it is a good idea to use it though. The top of the computer is designed to be a heatsink and it runs hot so I'm genuinely not sure that mounting it on its side will effect heat transfer.

  • being Fanless I guess this is a great HTPC? Anyone tried it?

    • +1

See comment above. Only 3 weeks in, but so far so good.

just got mine today, i paid $297 last week, was looking for something under $300 to claim on tax

  • +3

    I don't need it.. I don't need it.. I don't need it..

  • Can this be used as a plex server

  • I had this model for my bedroom tv since March , so far so good. Good enough for light office work, YouTube. I am consider the newer Q3 as it same 30% boost over Q2 . It will get hot when cup under lot of load, but you do not feel much. Good thing is it come with licensed windows 11.

I think if it have 16g ram with Q4 in future will Prefect for non gaming user.

  • Got one and I'm going to use it as a Google Meet unit - I'm sick of using my main laptop and multiple screens… Should I run Chrome OS - https://chromeenterprise.google/os/chromeosflex/ or just leave it on windows as I might need Teams, Webex, Zoom as not all my meetings are on Google?

    • +1

Anyone asking that question should check out this bargain. Mine is on order…

      • +1

Great deal… I've gone with using the no cost option of the third/vacant Bluetooth slot on my MX Keys, I love that keyboard - one touch and it swings over to the the mele unit… Two mice though so far

    • those conference apps all run within a browser/have web based front end anyway, so this should not be a blocker.

      • Yes I'm trying windows for now, will see if it's too much of a memory hog and going cleaner chrome OS is required… So far so good, it arrived yesterday and other than the well documented windows updates (yeah, they are crappy but who cares) I've got Google Meet web app, Microsoft Teams, Zoom all setup and working nicely… Happy to have these off my main setup

  • Mine arrived today but got no use as it was running Windows updates all day LOL.

  • Anyone know how this would go for emulation?

    • There are vid reviews showing them dropping plenty of frames with light gaming, so I'd think not.

      • Thanks for your reply, looks like an ex office PC would be way better in this price
