I have changed my mind about EB games

I've dissed EB many times on here before, but truthfully I never shopped with them besides buying the odd new release or accessories.

Anyway I recently had a few unwanted games that I couldn't sell so I decided to trade in Elden Ring, Rainbow Six, and Demon Souls. I only got $70 credit which is a rort but then I realised their pre-owned prices (on recent sale) were absurdly low. I picked up Kena & Deathloop. Didn't like the latter so I exchanged it for No Man's Sky. Didn't like that either so I exchanged again for GTA 5, then there was a few bucks left over so I shelled out a bit more and got Code Vein too.

Then on the way out I saw Elder Scrolls Online for $2 (some people have dropped thousands of hours into this so I've always wanted to try it).

Not bad tbh. I never knew they sell their old games for so cheap, which works out for me since I usually play games years (sometimes decades) after they release.

Surprised you couldn’t sell Elden Ring and Demon’s Souls.

Nice. Perhaps their antiquated store and late-2000s business practice is worth the (profanity) ridiculous ~$33 share price after all.

Personally I don’t rate them, but they have their place and the occasional good deal/trade in offers.

I like buying cheap XBox discs from EB Games when I walk by. However, I don't buy new from EB because their prices are often more expensive than elsewhere.

I don't buy new from EB because their prices are often more expensive than elsewhere.

      Don't they price match?

      • I only ever tried once, they told me 'no that's below our cost.' (Launch day COD, maybe MW)

    • EB still exist for 4 reasons:

      1) Boomer Ignorance.

The sheer number of parents, especially around Christmas, who rock into store and buy their kid the game they've been asking for without even bothering to price check is astounding. I sold a plethora of Call Of Duty titles back in the day for the full $90 price point from adults who honestly didn't know any better, even giving them preowned copies for almost the same price. Which leads me to my second point…

      2) Preowned Titles

Don't ask me the percentage EB get for selling preowned copies of games, but given how our sales metrics were always skewed towards them, I'd say it's fairly high. Preowned games also come with a two week, no questions asked return policy, so people (when sold to correctly) would oftern choose that title over a brand new one. Same game? Disc looks clean? I can save $5-20? Sign me up!

      3) "Loot"

Around 2010, head office fired a bunch of random gaming merch to stores like t-shirts, figurines, etc. They sold so unbelievably well that 2011 was box after box of merchandise to shove somewhere in the store. Based on this EB opened an entirely new arm, Zing!, to offload merch by the bucket load. It's not uncommon to find people who don't realise Zing! is actually owned by EB.

      4) Pre-Order Bonuses

I hate pre-orders, but it's impossible to ignore that giant collectors editions sell titles. EB have so many fingers in publishers pies that almost every major game release will have an epic edition that's exclusive to their company. Want the giant model spaceship and a bunch of other shit? Pay full price please, which people absolutely do.

Ultimately, EB don't care about selling new copies of AAA titles or consoles, nor do they really care about appealing to the hardcore gamer. Their profits come from parents, families, blissful ignorance and other areas that still seem to keep them well afloat in the market and as long as they can keep stores open in areas that serve them in these aspects, they can afford to remove the ones that aren't.

  • I never knew they sell their old games for so cheap

    Much cheaper on facebook marketplace

    • +3

Agree and disagree, they have GH games listed for 50c. Marketplace is closer to $8-30. It depends what you're after.

      • +2

The only 50c games I believe are outdated sports titles. Honestly, things like FIFA or NBA 19 might as well be sold as firewood.

Yay, after all the arguing and SlavOz BS in your other thread

    Congrats

So you can't sell your games but you expect them to pay you more?

That's just retarded, why do you think you'll get a premium price just by walking in on a whim.

List of Ebay or Facebook and you'll get more but be prepared to pay for it with your time, effort and risk factor.

Would you sell your house for $50 if nobody else was offering to buy or you were hypothetically barred from selling to anyone else?

      I doubt it.

      • -1

Please don't equate immaterial entertainment goods to life necessities.

And also yes people do sell they homes for $50 due to distress, look at the US during the GFC.

      • Would you sell your house

We're still waiting for you to ……

        • +1

What would a Slavoz house look like inside ? The whole bedroom lined with aluminium foil ?

      • As ridiculous as your example is if I could buy a house for $50 I would have no problem selling mine for $50

i have always felt eb games was a rip off but i like looking at the pop culture stuff in their stores so i hope they dont go broke

    gamestop to the moon

    • IMO the existence of the pop culture stuff means they know that (and are preparing for when) selling physical games will eventually dwindle to nothing. They also own ZING which are purely pop culture stores.

So they have a better chance to survive than other game stores when eventually everything is forced to digital distribution only (except for the odd collector's pack here and there).

    • They are initially expensive when new.

But once they have a big sale, they pump out some great deals.

  • OP should check out the trade in prices for games at JB Hi-Fi, brutal.

  • If there is a CEX store near you, I find their trade in price much better

    • Yes and no.

Most trade in values (when they are not having a sale) are better at EB Games.

I buy all my console games used on Ebay. Then when I finish with them I sell them on Ebay for the same price I bought them. All you loose is the shipping cost and ebay fees. Basically you can play every triple A release for just the $10 shipping and ebay fees each time. Of course this assumes you are like me where you just play a triple A game once and then never play it again.

    • Yeah I like to keep most of my games, if at least for the prospect that I might want to play it again in a few years and don't want to go thru the hassle of buying it again.

It really says a lot that I sold Elden Ring. I'll play it again down the line but it's such a disappointing game that I really don't care if and when that is.

Do you think it's emblematic that Chinese people love it in Australia? (Inappropriate)

  • You only got $70 because you trade-in the games when they were having a sale.

  • I like EB Games when the random good deal is posted.

There trade-in services can be quite generous sometimes.
